Oshkosh 2024 - Who's going?

All right, which one of you sent both me and the B25 behind me around on 27 this morning? :fingerwag:

All jokes aside, back up here for the last two days...want to see the Saturday night airshow among other things. It's been great this year!

I get up around 4:30 every morning. Getting on a golf cart that is covered with dew is like riding in the rain. But who's complaining... I was in the Super Bowl. I might have muttered under my breath a few times though!

Same show as Wed, or did they change it up? Thought really hard about coming back…but couldn’t talk myself into a positive bs/benefit ratio. So… watched the video I took Wed while sitting in front of the fire pit.

We arrived Thursday, so I hadn't seen it yet.
 
Last day today. I took Friday off, but went every other day. Today I’m headed to the seaplane base and ultralights to see what’s left.

Next year we’ll have a plane again and are already planning on flying in.
 
Got 30 minutes away on departure and ran into sketchy weather. Currently sitting at Dells KDLL waiting it out. Yay!
 
We made it back to Tampa around noon today by way of a couple of days in Indiana visiting friends. Got some good IMC time on the way home at 9000. Once we crossed into Florida we were over fields of cotton. This was our 10th year flying in and we’re already looking forward to our 11th.

Flew in Thursday before the show and got great parking without the nose to tail in the N40. Stayed until Thursday morning and took off before 7:00am. Spent a couple days recuperating at my mom and dads in Illinois before making my way back to Ft Worth yesterday.

What a great show with perfect weather. The day that had a chance of rain (Tuesday) was the best day as the crowds were low. Used the heck out of my foldable e-bike. For those that need good internet, Hardy’s was good enough to do my couple of Zoom meetings I had during the week. The ladies there even refilled my coffee for me

Found a new place to eat, Greg’s. A $10 Uber ride. Great people and wonderful food. Away from the grounds a bit, but we went twice.

The new burger place that everybody raved on field was meh in my opinion.

Met some great people and met up with “old friends” and already planning for next year. Might be forced to get a house and a car as my wife won’t go without either, and you gotta make her happy

Perfect weather all week

This'll be a hard one to top. Absolutely amazing to get to see a Hurricane, Spitfire, and Lancaster together.

Kind of funny i got to see the Snowbirds and Frecce Tricolori before I've seen the Blues & Thunderbirds

Looking forward to sleeping in my own bed tonight.

Flew in on Friday. Setup camp with my son and my friend Steve. As of late Sunday any amount of talking would trigger a chronic cough. By Monday morning I had a bad cough and felt rotten. Sometime during the week I started alternating fevers and chills. Pretty much self-isolated from Monday until we departed on Thursday. Every time I tried to go look at a display or something, I'd arrive back at the tent feeling worse than before. Spent most of my time in the tent reading or hiding under the shade of the airplane. Not a great week. Exited Thursday and the flight turned out as expected. We made it to Danville Illinois and rested for several hours waiting for weather to clear in TN/North Ga. Arrived home later in the evening after dodging a few dissipating storms between Illinois and NW Gerogia.

Been mostly laid up in bed since. Turns out I have a pretty nasty case of bronchitis. Might be a follow-on to Covid, although when I took a Covid test, it was negagive.

Not my best Oshkosh experience. I pledge to do better next year.

We actually decided just skip the night air show Wednesday just to get a break from all of the overstimulation and this is where we ended up. It's absolutely beautiful. Fox River brewing Co.
I think we're going to focus on stepping away from the air show for meals more frequently next time.

I told my wife after you left and the guy on the other side still hadn't returned, that I must has scared everybody off. Did the guy in the bonanza next to you ever set up a tent?

He did the first night. I talked to him and he said his buddy got a good spot in Vintage, so he was going to go camp over there. Nice guy...787 Captain & Air Force vet.

Did you at least get to see the night air show and fireworks on Saturday? I missed Oshkosh this year but when I do go I too need a break away from the crowds and chaos each day. I am usually back at Scholler by 5pm and go out to dinner somewhere beyond walking distance to the show to unwind and get away from the crowds. There are some really good places to eat that aren’t too busy if you are willing to drive 10 or 15 minutes from the show.

Getting back to the campground by 7 still allows time to go catch a presentation at theater in the woods or a movie at the fly in theater which makes for a relaxing night. The bathrooms and showers are usually also pretty empty and with good hot water later at night The night air show is the one thing I would never miss though. You can’t really find one on nearly the same level as Oshkosh anywhere else.

Thanks. We had a few weather delays for a few hours each, but for the most part it was an easy trip. Much better than the trip up, which was as stressful as anything I have ever experienced in an aircraft.

With sleep and alcohol since, do you think get-there-itis played a role in that stress?

I know you had one "own-goal" type incident, but was the choice to go as part of a group a stress reducer or a stress adder? I've always assumed it would add stress...

Stress adder going up, because we reinforced each other's get-there-itis. Coming home, stress reducer because we reinforced caution in each other. Nobody was in a mood for a repeat.

Top track is mine through northern Alabama. Bottom track is the other aircraft. You can see where we got separated; I turned north through a tiny hole and he turned west. They got it worse than I did, but he is also IFR rated and equipped.

At no point was I in other than VFR conditions. Nor was I scud running. Altitude was NLT 2500 AGL. But I will NEVER do this again.
