Get my Rotory and Fixed wing certs at the same time???

Ron, It changed around 1972/73. Army stopped issuing the "Tactical Instrument" at that time and all aviators were required to qualify for the "Standard Instrument" rating, although the term "standard is no longer used. I upgraded to standard in 1973, walked into the Honolulu GADO and was issued...

Ionosphere VHF skipping - what's your farthest?

Sounds good, but did VoA broadcast other stations call letters, or were they just rebroadcasting the program? Not really an issue for me, just a bit curious since you mentioned it.

Flying a non-GPS approach with GPS guidance

Tim, Isn't that what this says, or are you thinking of something different? g. GPS Approach Procedures ................... Therefore, all the approaches that can be used by GPS now contain "GPS" in the title (e.g., "VOR or GPS RWY 24," "GPS RWY 24," or "RNAV (GPS) RWY 24")...

Flying a non-GPS approach with GPS guidance

Tim, I used this site http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgAdvisoryCircular.nsf/MainFrame?OpenFrameSet and looked under the section called "Current AC's" and it is not in the list. I typed "90-94" in the search function on that page and got the info I posted earlier.

Flying a non-GPS approach with GPS guidance

Tim, Just wanted to pass this along for your info. As John mentioned AC 90-94 is not just just out of date, it has been cancelled by the FAA. gary

Ionosphere VHF skipping - what's your farthest?

In 1971/72, while in Vietnam, I was flying one of the few UH-1s with a HF Radio. I was on the ground with the engine running, waiting for a passenger and playing with the HF to kill time, when I started hearing music. In fact the song, for those who might remember, was "I've Got a Brand New Pair...

What browser are you using? I use Firefox and Safari, and no problems loading any images. I've used that site for years and never a problem.

Can ATC issue arrival procedures to airports not associated with the STAR?

I don't remember anything specific about normal STAR's, however a RNAV STAR must be retrievable from the database. I don't believe any STAR is allowed to be issued unless it is specified for the destination airport. It may happen, but I think it would be an improper clearance from ATC. To quote...

    Runway Headings

I'm not big on learning tricks for this type of thing, however if you like tricks, here's something I realized many years ago. I'm not saying this will be very helpful, just an interesting insight into the numbers of a compass. Add the first two numbers and the result will be the same as adding...

I can't get it to work now, either. You may have to initiate a search yourself at this site. http://www.gpoaccess.gov/fr/advanced.html Select 1999, for date use 04/01/1999, and in the search block, type FAA. When the search is complete, select item #1. Hope this works out. gary edit: PDF of...

    DCA 60nm zone

230 knots. Just so everyone understands, the course isn't just about speed limits within the 60 NM ring. Any VFR operation within 60 NM requires the course to be completed. Also, it's not just for PIC's, any required SIC must also take the course. As you, Ron and others have stated...

    Fix Minimums

I think you're reading the line incorrectly. It's the ORIYE Fix Minimums, not the ORIYE Fix Minimums. In other words, the term fix goes with the name of the fix, not the term minimums. In this case, if you identify the ORIYE Fix, you may descend to lower minimums after you have passed ORIYE.

Approach Plate Question - ILS 32 at SBY

Joe, I'm no expert, but it looks to me like COLBE is correctly depicted as a HILPT (see thumbnail). As previously mentioned, the "IAF" was inadvertently removed when the NDB was decommissioned.
