Flight school implementing some pretty harsh new rules

My rental place requires a flight plan to be filed and activated/closed on any flights over 25 miles away. Pain in the rear when 90% of my flying is putting around the local area and $100 burger runs within an 50 miles.

    Garmin GMA340 pannel question

Ah, yes, that is one thing that would cut radio 1 out for the copilot. I'm sure I pressed the button, the light was not on, but who knows. Thanks.

    Garmin GMA340 pannel question

Had an issue in a rental 172 this weekend that I have not encountered. Typical Garmin GMA340/430 radio stack/intercom. Pilot could hear the radio and copilot over the intercom. Copilot could hear pilot over the intercom but not hear any radio chatter. I don't have alot of time with the...

    Basicmed and color vision deficiency

What year did this happen? In my research, I had heard this was possable, have an expert, such as an Ophthalmologists give you a letter, Statements of facts, to the fact you passes one of the FAA colorvision tests. However, after that 727 crashed in 2002, and the co-pilots color deficiency was...

    Basicmed and color vision deficiency

That is how I am understanding it, limitation on previous medical is no longer relevant. The only limitations seem to be the ones on your Drivers licence, which can include prescription lenses, no night driving, etc. Your correct, I had no Idea I was color deficient untill my first 3rd class...

    Basicmed and color vision deficiency

Having read through the 77 page Basicmed document and the FAAs FAQ on it, I haven't found an answer to this. I currently hold a class 3 medical cert. with the "NOT VALID FOR NIGHT FLYING OR BY COLOR SIGNAL CONTROL" due to being slilghtly color deficient. Under Basicmed it appears you must...

What would you do? Question about following towers instructions.

Well, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thought the way I did. For the record, my first intention was to: When the mock DPE asked me what I was going to do, I said "overfly the runway at pattern altitude, then turn right cross to downwind. This was apparentaly not what he wanted and...

What would you do? Question about following towers instructions.

This happened a few years ago while doing a mock check ride (in a slow Cessna 150), what would you have done? Situation: 8 miles East of a Class D airport (with radar), runway 26 in use. Upon initial call up I get " make straight in, Runway 26, report 3 mile final." I turn directly towards...

Engine Knock After HeadGasket Replacement (Lawn mower)

How old is the fuel? Perhaps its detonation now that your now making compression and perhaps the fuel is old from sitting? Otherwise I would look for mechanical noises from the valve train.

Just took first flight lesson...is it normal to feel overhwhelmed?

The best way I describe how it felt for me, is there are 30 tasks to do to land a plane, in the beginning you mess up 30 tasks because your overwhelmed and don't have all the tools yet, so your instructor takes over and does all 30. After a while you figure out 5 of the things, and your...

    Learning the "old way"

I got my PPL almost 2 years ago. All of the 150/152 trainers had nothing but one radio, single VOR and no GPS. I put Forflighton my phone towards the end for access to weather info but thats it. I really think that was the ideal situation to learn to fly and not fiddle with gadgets.

Ok - why is this important on a sectional?

Toggling between street and aerial maps on Forflight you can see it. Its labled Monto Craters Tunnel and looks like it paralles Bald Mountain Road. Its an unusually straight road for the area so it probably stands out from the air.

Ok - why is this important on a sectional?

If its like the covered aquaduct here in So Cal, its covered with concrete, it basically looks like a road, so its probably visible from the air.

    KSZP (Santa Paula) Pireps

Either OXR or CMA are easy to fly into. I don't believe OXR has self serve fuel, CMA does. SZP has self serv fuel, cheapest in the area, stillunder $4 as of last weekend. I believe there is transient parking at CMA near the cafe (which is excelent by the way.)
