Oshkosh 2024 - Who's going?

The main issue, for me, is not the driving is that the Airplane campground seems to be Much Nicer than Camp Scholler. Last two years I was airplane camping and it seemed fine.

Seriously when I visit camp Scholler, it seems like refugee camp , like you see in all the wartime footage on evening news.

Especially since I’m taking my family with 2 kids, the youngest being only 7.
Probably be okay if I can get early enough to get a campsite near the Red Market / Playground.

I've done GA camping a bunch and Scholler a bunch, but these days I always do Scholler even if I bring the plane. North 40 has gotten more amenities, but South 40... Well, I'm just glad I didn't end up camping there. Parked the plane 3/4 of a mile from the nearest tram stop last year. :eek:
I'm going up with a gaggle of +/- 4 airplanes. Some of us have several options for parking, while others are GAP. We would like to camp together.

Would it be better to meet nearby, arrive as a flight, taxi to GAP, and park there? Of should we all park wherever and meet/camp in Scholler?

One permutation: if my buddy gets his Twin Beech C-45 fixed, the main group of 5-6 will arrive on that, park at Warbirds, and camp in Warbird camping. I might park my aircraft in the IAC area. Can I camp with my friends in Warbird camping if I did not arrive with them?
If you're camping, you want GAC, not GAP.

And if some have to be in GAC, then everyone should be in GAC, and yes you should arrive together to make that happen. It's OK to park warbirds, vintage, etc in GAC but you can't park your Cirrus in Vintage. I wouldn't camp in Scholler if I was flying in unless I had someone else bringing a vehicle with all my stuff in it, as it'd be quite the hike with a bunch of stuff.

They are camping in Scholler or warbirds, so GAP is the correct parking.

I bought wristbands for the folks we rent our trailer from as part of our rental fee (we get our own wristbands from our volunteer hours). Anyway the bands came in the mail today.

As for Scholler, as a Homebuilt Welcome Wagon driver I get to see pretty much all of Scholler (and all the camping areas for that matter) and totally echo that your experience has a lot to do with where you end up in Scholler. This is not a universal truth, but my observation is the closer you are to the show the better the overall experience.

We setup on the flight line with friends....show up early for breakfast and leave late and sleep in AC. I park in a private lot, close to the gate. Easy peasy.

I don't get it. If you're not camping with your plane, then why on earth would you take up a spot in GAC and not instead park in GAP?
In my mind I don't think it should be permissible for folks to occupy a GAC spot and not camp. You're taking a valuable space away from a fly-in camper who might now have to get shuffled down to the S40.

I'm jaded as I've seen multiple times over the years where some d*** took up a prime GAC spot near the green shower house & didn't camp or just put up a tent to appear to be camping. One guy ghosted the registration folks trying to hunt them down the entire week. I don't care if you paid the whole week for GAC. You're still wasting a spot and you're a douche if you're not camping and taking up a GAC spot.
I'll stop yelling at clouds now.

Well, they have people driving in and warbirding in, and they all want to camp together, so GAC isn't an option.
Looking back at the post, nothing in it says anything about anyone driving in?

Also, it is perfectly fine to park a warbird in GAC. GAC is "anything goes". Vintage, warbird, aerobatic, etc are all welcome in addition to all of us spam cans.
 
Question regarding definition of parking vs / camping.
I am staying at an airbnb offsite. So I plan to park in vintage parking.

If I am not technically camping, am I allowed to erect a shade tent near my plane during the day while I am there so we have some shade for chilling and drinking beers watching the airshows?
I don't know if there is a no tent rule in the parking area. Or are parking and camping the same location, 1 just pays for sleeping by the plane? I could use some clarification.

Here is how it works in Vintage so your results may vary. When we reserve parking space in our 195 rows, some of us are VAP and others are VAC. Can't camp in VAP but I don't know about a "shade structure" that you are watching all the time you are there. Our 5-6 rows are all contiguous. They (Vintage) try to keep things right, and they do a great job. Have a good time. Hard not to.
 
Vintage has by and large done away with parking only and GOOD RIDDANCE. I have long lobbied against having any. With the exception of certain display areas, it's largely gone now.

The 195 rows is an aberration. If it weren't for Tall Tom that wouldn't exist at all.
 
I’m not exactly sure how they manage HBC and HBP but it doesn't seem to much of an issue.

HBP I believe is limited to the stuff on the runway side.

Nope—I have first hand experience from the past 3 years as we’ve parked not camped in HBC west of Knapp. The rough dividing line between HBP and HBC is Knapp St, but they will mingle campers and parkers to the west of Knapp and south of Papa-1 for a few rows, and west of Knapp but north of Papa-1 they’ll park even deeper into what’s ostensibly HBC.

It sounds to me like those are options that poster was suggesting, not an actual plan.
Yes, I was just trying to figure out my choices.
Sounds like if we come in a gaggle of planes, best plan is arrive together and go to GAC.
If we arrive in the Twin Beech, we'll park in the Warbird area and camp in Warbird parking.
If I choose to fly my Super D, I may park in IAC and try to talk my way into Warbird camping with the Beech group.
 
Not going to Airventure, but will probably visit the museum in October. Lot less people and planes to bump into then.
 
I realize it’s the world’s fair of aviation, I just don’t care to sleep in a tent and battle large crowds. Still want to see the museum, so we plan to go there and to Dayton on the same trip

I’m guessing you realize you don’t have to camp in a tent, but understand that crowds aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. The EAA museum is a good one but the USAF Museum at Wright-Pat AFB in Dayton should be a stop on any aviation aficionado’s list.
 
Debating bringing my electric scooter with me. How useful would that be? I know its not allowed on air show grounds. I don't want to use up payload and have it not being worthwhile bringing.

We bring 2 folding e-bikes and a folding wagon. We camp in Sleepy Hollow (across from SOS Bros) and find them exceedingly useful for getting around outside of the show— definitely beats walking.IMG_0799.jpegIMG_0387.jpeg

What if someone is parking in GAC? Still worthwhile?
Maybe, especially if you a ways away from a shower house. I’m not real clear on the bicycle rules in GAC so don’t know how much of a blind eye gets turned to bicycle use in the GAC area.

Depends on how far away in GAC you wind up. If you wind up in the north or south 40, it can be a 2 mile walk to the show area. The shuttle busses can get packed to the point where you wait a while to catch one at peak hours. Plus there are runs to the store, food vendors, shower trailers, etc.

I brought a pair of folding minibikes one year. They're really a PITA for the utility that they offer. I never brought them back.
 
I hope to be there Monday, maybe Tuesday as well, assuming I don't get hit with travel for work around that week.

We'll be driving in daily - anyone have any tips on parking?

There is a new rule for Thu, July 25 only. They expect a lot of departures on Thursday morning, people who stayed for the Wednesday night airshow. Don't get to Fisk until 8AM!

Beginning Thursday, July 20, 2024, OSH is closed to all arriving aircraft from 8:00 PM until 7:00 AM CDT daily, except Thursday July 25, 2024 – no FISK arrivals before 8:00am.

Yeah, you must have missed the debacle last year. The entire taxiway system gridlocked. People stay for the Wednesday night airshow and then bug out first thing Thursday.

I posted a picture of the line of planes stuck on the taxiway with the poem:

One fine Thursday morning in Oshkosh,
The pilots all decided to spit,
But they all got stuck on Papa,
The airport had turned into SHAVING CREAM (Be nice and clean, shave every day, and you'll always look keen).

And hung it on our operations building window.

I saw that, and I was wondering why they put that rule into place. Makes sense.
