They've tried. The response has been, "Do you think we're morons? That we can't see with our own eyes? That we can't tell a drone from an airplane?"

At that point, it's sorta tough for the .gov to say, "Yes, you're morons."

As a .mil guy, you wouldn’t believe how often and with enthusiasm the government has said that exact thing to me.

I would also like to remind you in 2010, the Honorable Hank Johnson, expressed a concern to the commander of Pacific Fleet; transcript below:

Johnson: "My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize"

(Adm) Willard: "We don't anticipate that."

There’s morons on both sides of the equation.

The government response actually should be, “No, we don’t think you’re morons. We know for a fact you’re morons.”

Did I build enough suspense?! Seriously, I'm on vacation with better things to do! Given the drone hysteria, maybe it's something. I only have a tablet so keying anything of substance is painful. At around 10pm, I was sitting on my veranda. A drone, more of the package delivery size, zoomed past me, eye level, about 30 yards from the ship heading aft. About 1 minute later, it zoomed aft to bow. No noise like I've heard with other drones which could be because of the wave noise. I thought it strange for a cruise ship to drone test at this time of night. Also, if they did, it could be a huge invasion of privacy so I doubt they would do it. I expected the drone to fly around the ship or above it and land. It didn't. It flew out of site off the port side towards Cuba. I asked a crew member the next day if the ship had drones for inspection etc and was told no. So, I have no idea how far from Cuba we were, maybe 50 to 100 miles, but a drone of suspect origin conducted a fly by.

Almost certainly. In a city of 5000 people, there is no way the authorities (the crew) can keep all contraband away.

Not sure why it would be an invasion of privacy to fly a drone past the ship. Unless it’s inside your room with the door closed, nothing on a cruise ship is private.

They are actually aircraft piloted by Clowns from the past. They are transporting new Clowns around New Jersey. Expect a new rash of Clown Hysteria similar to 2016 to break out soon.

So not unexplainable since there are multiple plausible and utterly terrestrial explanations. We just can't be sure which is exactly correct.

...Or it flew as far as it could to get out of sight, and then re-approached the ship from a different direction to return to its owner.

Was watching some of the incessant panic-mongering over this on TV this afternoon. Commentator was indignant over "whatever these drones are, they definitely should NOT be in the skies above our heads"...

OK, why exactly? Even if there are drones - and there probably are a few, though every single video I've seen has clearly been an airplane or helicopter - what law is being broken? As long as someone operates within regulations, there is no particular reason they can't fly one around without (gasp) notifying anyone, or asking permission, or telling anyone after the fact that they were doing so.

Unless it was an editorial or a person stating their opinon in an interview, a journalist shouldn’t be stating their opinion. Their job is to present facts, so basically just read the telemprompter.

The problem is, facts left news journalism a long time ago. They now sell entertainment, it’s up to the viewer/reader to separate the bull from the chit.
