Surprise, surprise, surprise

Got lased on Wednesday night coming out of north Atlanta area. Bright blue laser that lit up the cabin. Unfortunately only a tiny percent get caught.
 
I wonder if it would be entrapment if a police helicopter with a nice FLIR system flew around just to bait them into lasing it.

Nope.

Its not entrapment to stake out an area waiting for someone to decide to commit a crime, even with bait (undercover officer waiting to be a victim, bait car for vehicle theft investigations, etc).

Entrapment would be if an officer was with someone and encouraged them to commit a crime “hey bro, point this laser at that helicopter” then arrested them for it.

It’s only entrapment if an officer encourages or entices someone into committing a crime that they would otherwise not be predisposed to commit. Just hanging out waiting for a crook to be a crook is Police Work 101.
 
How big and costly would a laser have to be to do that? Doesn’t seem like average Joe would have something that strong

Cheap consumer grade stuff will do it. And this time of year, lots of dumbarses have new toys.

Last year, I visited an EAA chapter where a member described his laser incident. He worked with the Feds and the guy was caught. The laser had 1000x the power of a common laser pointer, with an aperture about five inches across. Don't know where the perp bought it, but he was not some brilliant nerd. When the cops came to arrest him he was already in jail on an unrelated charge.

Does your friend have an older Bonanza? Have him rig a fuel dump valve, spray some LL over them then drop a flare.
