The theater vs home vs home theater thread had a list of movies that are theater-worthy.

How's about movie reviews?

Most recent movie we saw: (home) "The Florida Project"

Interesting indie, Willem Dafoe is about the only name actor, many of the rest are in their first movie.

it's one of those movies that I liked, but have trouble recommending since it's...different...and might not be for all tastes. No 'splosions but lots of helicopters.

A low budget motel, manager is a regular guy just trying to do the best he can, single moms live there with their kids, and the kids act like kids. That's pretty much it, no real plot, just a movie about folks trying to make it through life. Good characters and good acting all around.

Really nothing that’s come out in the last decade I consider theater material. Too much CGI. Poor CGI at that.
 
The wife and I watched "The Florida Project" recently as well. Odd movie but sort of interesting and some decent acting though I thought the one mom who was always giving Dafoe's character a hard time was a little over the top at times.

We also watched "Lady Bird" recently. Another odd movie but we enjoyed it.
 
The movie-before last (also home):

"Only the Brave"

Not a date movie...especially if she doesn't know how it ends. Just sayin'.

Also good acting. I really like Josh Brolin and Jennifer Connelly is always good. Jeff Bridges was OK, but he played sort of the same character he did in "True Grit" and "Hell or High Water".
 
I record The Martian and watch it time and again. Right now I'm watching a BBC production that imagines what the Yellowstone supervolcano eruption would be like.

Ash mixed with the moisture in your lungs makes a good concrete.

Moon was an OUTSTANDING and EPIC movie. Ranks right up there with some of my favorite movies.

I would strongly encourage anybody who's a sci-fi, thriller, or Sam Rockwell fan to see it.
 
Watched Peter Rabbit last night. (I only get to see kid movies)
It was really fun. The kids love it. The CGI was quite impressive.
 
Netflix made a movie called Mute that what sort of kinda a follow up. Sam Rockwell shows up for a very entertaining cameo. I liked it. Just saw Whiplash, which I can heartily recommend.

Moon I liked. I didn't hear about it when it came out. I watched it on someone's recommendation and still haven't figured out how I missed it.

Whiplash I liked a lot, too. J K Simmons is a pretty good actor. Check him out in Burn After Reading and Patriot's Day.

I loved Whiplash. That was my first exposure to J K Simmons. I think I even saw him in Whiplash before I ever saw him in the Farmers Insurance ads on TV. When I first saw one of those, I was like WTF - that's the badass guy from Whiplash??? In an insurance ad???

If you like Simmons, check out Counterpart on Starz, where he plays dual roles (kind of like Sam Rockwell in Moon). I have my own theories about where his Counterpart characters are headed, and am looking forward to the next season.

The first role I remember seeing him in was in Spiderman, Peter Parker's editor boss, J Jonah Jameson.
 
In A World... is a pretty good comedy if you like voice overs and voice acting work. It was on one of the streaming things a while back, not sure where it is now.

That was a fun movie.

Some actors really are good, and when they get to play actors on screen, they can be even better. That movie had actors playing actors. And I like the trailer for the "quadrilogy". Kind of a spoof on the business.
 
Not sure why, but I got reminded of a movie I saw a long time ago - The Sweet Hereafter. It's not a feel-good story, so be careful. But good writing and acting, and a lot of emotion. Ian Holm (you'll know him as soon as you see his picture) is a lawyer that goes into a small town after a particularly bad traffic accident and tries to get together families for a class action lawsuit. His life isn't what it seems, and neither are the lives of the locals. It's a tough movie to watch, but really good.
 
Now this would be worth either paying the Cinemark price, or crashing @simtech home movie pad

It's what is found in most movies these days when either models or the real thing would have been used in the past.

Computer generated images...and most of them are still quite apparent even though folks say they are better.
 
Would it reveal my abstinence from the big screen if I said, "Monty Python"?
I could add "Airplane", to lock in the revelation of my emotional age.

I like a little more explosions in my movies. I placed one rule in my theater..action movies only hahaha. But it didn't work nor did it last long. This past weekend we watched the greatest showman. Wasn't bad but wasn't glorious either.
 
Finally got around to watching "American Made" last night.

I don't know how much of it is true, but it was very entertaining so that didn't matter.
 
Last one I saw in an actual theatre was Justice League. It's suckage was only mitigated by the fact that the theatre we were in served beer and wine.
 
I think the last time I was in a movie theater was 2005.
 
Watched A quiet place last night. Acting wasn't bad but the movie was stupid. Not sure how it got such good reviews. I mean literally no talking in the movie all subtitles. I figured itnwas going to be that way but rented it anyway. And they should have told what happened to get where they are. Don't wast your time or money on it.
 
I thought A Quiet Place was alright, and I don't normally like sci-fi.

Someone mentioned The Founder - that's an outstanding movie that I didn't think I'd like at all. Everyone I've suggested it to loves it.

And for JK Simmons fans, The Music Never Stopped is a good one. True story of a father who has never connected with his son. When the son gets brain cancer and needs surgery he loses his memory. The only time it comes back is when he is listening to music, so to connect with his son the father forces himself to enjoy the music his son likes.
 
I think the last movie I saw in a theater was some IMAX NASCAR documentary. The movie was so-so and the 3D wasn't great. The IMAX Titanic documentary, however, was impressive. That was more than ten years ago.
