Need to check on progress of pax train, is it possible to track trains' loc?

Used to be that a pocket watch was how you'd track a train and it was the only away to avoid a head-on collision.

It's Ok pops..... we got a nice rocking chair here for you....those trains wont hit head on any more....:lol::lol: But yes, your right and it worked well for many years.

My late uncle started working for the railroad in 1934 shoveling coal into the burner. When the war came along, he was not allowed by law to quit and join the military. When he retired in '74 he had been the #1 seniority engineer for about 8 years. I have long forgot what RR he worked for, but he had some great stories.

He also had some great old equipment (and pocket watches) that he saved/collected over the years. But right after he died his wife sold everything she could and took off with the money, and no one ever knew what happened to her.

I'm gonna be on Amtrak 513, the Cascades, Vancouver-Seattle, tomorrow (well, today).

I am looking for amtrak from el paso to alpine, tx with an evening arrival today.

My trip today was great fun. Really enjoyed the train.

worked absolutely great - have been able to track and prep for their arrival - thanks!
And....despite my predictions of days-long delays, derailments - 13 mins late is all.
Retracting ill-thoughts of the rail system.

They got fairly lucky. My luck with Amtrak with friends and family has been either on time or insanely late. Leaning on the insanely late side.

I think he north routes are more likely to be on time than the central routes. I took the Denver-Chicago a couple years ago (starts in SF area) and it was 2 hours late just getting into Denver. Eight hours late into CHI. I love trains, but never again Amtrak. Would love to take the canadian rockies trip sometime

The California zephyr. i take that train from from salt lake to grand junction CO a couple times a year.

A couple winters ago I got stuck for 19 hrs because of an avalanche.

just use the amtrak website? It has a tracker.

Amtrak runs on the freight railroads and much depends on how heavy the traffic is. For a long time, the Lake Shore Limited was known as the "LATE Shore Limited". Things have gotten better recently.

He looked at his water and his water was low
He looked at his watch and his watch was slow
He turned to his frieman and this is what he said
"Boy, we're going to reach Frisco, but we'll all be dead"

It sure was still the late shore limited a few days ago. 3 hours late leaving Chicago and 3:30 late into Cleveland. Thank God it's comfortable at least.

The only time I have ridden a train was when I was a kid. We would throw our bikes onto a flat car then climb on and ride to the other side of town. The train never got over about 7 -10 MPH. I guess we were lucky that the engineer never throttled up to full speed and took us to the Gulf coast.....

I've taken Amtrak from LA to Chicago three or four times to visit folks. It's really not a bad way to go. It's about as fast as the bus with stops factored except you don't have to change buses, and you can get up and walk around.

In Germany I took the train everywhere. In Europe, you can actually use it as a viable mode of transportation to get to work, or go any given place you need to be, not just on some narrow corridor on an infrequent schedule.

When I lived in London I took the high speed (185 mph) Eurostar train to Paris several times. I have to admit it was a far more civilized way to make that journey than enduring airport security and a short haul jet ride.

Having said that, what the train promoters in North America overlook is the USA and Canada are vast nations with mostly sparse population densities compared with Western Europe.
