IRS Building Hit By Small Plane

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

I note the comparison to the Lidle crash, into a building made of brick rather than glass. Seems to me, for the safety of the American people, that we should be requiring all buildings to be constructed from brick (American bricks, not Chinese bricks) with all glass-paneled buildings retrofitted to meet airplane crash safety limits. We are talking about safety of all Americans here. Imagine if that had been a day-care center in the church annex of a hospital for Haitian refugees. It could have been a catastrophe of epic proportions, even if he could have mitigated the damage with a flight plan.

At least they scrambled the F16s. A wise, wise precaution indeed.

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

It was a 235 - and I imagine most of the damage was from the fire, not the impact damage.

Also, note well: it hit a glass curtainwall building - the entire exterior is glass. Not exactly a hardened target.
Also, as an office building, it was most likely filled with tons of paper.

On February 18, 2010, Joseph Andrew Stack of Austin, TX flew his Piper Cherokee into a building at the 9400 block of Research BLVD in North Austin, TX that contained several government offices including the IRS whom he writes about in the manifesto found just before his death.
Unbelievable.

Of course he couldn't file a flight plan because the building didn't have an identifier. :D

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

Unbelievable.

Utterly believable. Suicide is a fairly selfish act in its essence. That some guy would try and get back at the government not even beginning to think about how he was royally screwing the rest of us isn't in the least surprising.

Heh, if he would have filed for IRS, it would have taken him to Michigan...

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

Ha he should have just to give the idiot reporters one less thing to "report".

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

Now that's funny...I don't care who you are.

Of course he would have forgotten to open it so it would have still been in the news. "GA Pilot files flight plan but never opens it."

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

I hope that his wife was not in there.

I sure hope not, but evidently he thought it was his prerogative to launch an exploding fireball into a whole floor occupied by real people just like you and me. I don't think he was opposed to murder to get his message across.

....

Now, now, that would not be in fitting with security theatre and the like, as requiring all buildings to be constructed of brick might actually do something vis-a-vis the supposed problem.

Instead, what should be done is that we require all buildings to be painted so as to look like they're brick. That way, everyone thinks we're doing something about it, when in fact we're doing nothing at all!

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

I just hope that the authorities who lord over our freedom to fly understand that this is an act of an insane individual and does not reflect the broad community of pilots and owners in GA, and that they act appropriately in the aftermath of the insane selfish act of one person on the edge. I really hope the reaction is measured and thought out rationally.

I guess you still believe in Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and inexpensive 100LL huh?

Hopefully this means she's okay:

Earlier Thursday, Stack's $232,000 home in a middle-class neighborhood was engulfed in flames about five miles from the crash site. Two law enforcement officials told the Associated Press Stack had apparently set fire to his home prior to the crash.

Neighbor Elbert Hutchins, told the Associated Press that a woman and her teenage daughter drove up to the house before firefighters arrived.

"They both were very, very distraught," said Hutchins, a retiree who said he didn't know the family well. "'That's our house!' they cried 'That's our house!"'

They need to put it in perspective... had he gone in there with a gun or a bomb, the casualties would have been much worse. But Chicken Little is almost inured to such stuff; airplanes are still scary. So I don't have high hopes that this will be dealt with rationally.

All I can say about this guy is "good riddance".
I sympathize with his problems, but there's a lot of wisdom in the old saying "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s".

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

The good news is of three "attacks" carried out by light aircraft, two killed nobody and the third may not have either. The worst result was a fire at an IRS building, which if started any other way would have been roundly lauded by practically everyone.

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

Ok here is my tinfoil thought for the day.

When will the FBI and other agencies start data mining PoA, especially the SZ, to see if there are any pilots who are expressing an anti-government attitude. Then the powers that be will add these guys to 'watch lists' and perhaps they will get searched like Ted recently did!!

Your response is pretty harsh and personal don't you think?

If you read what I said closely, I used the word HOPE, the implication here is that I fear that the rational approach will not prevail. Don't you hope for the same thing...a rational response to the act of a mad person?

My bet is that mining already takes place by that large govt internet vacuum cleaner. What list that lands you on is a different question.

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

New question on the 8500-8 "Do you owe money to the IRS or the subject of an IRS Audit"?

So you are saying that I shouldn't admit that I used to work with a fake church tax kook? (he ended up in jail for a few years)

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

I hope with mirth. Sorry, while I wish no one any harm whatsoever, I think lots of Americans wouldn't mind seeing the institution of the IRS suffer calamity.
I agree with you though. I think that, unfortunately, the guy is going to become a hero to a certain segment of the population.

Not really. It just seems like most of your posts lately take on a negative tone.

Sorry, while I wish no one any harm whatsoever, I think lots of Americans wouldn't mind seeing the institution of the IRS suffer calamity.

Institution, yes. But to advocate violence or violent behavior is just over the top in my opinion.

Hero? Probably a few will think so -- there are plenty of loons in a population of 300 million...

It's no excuse, but the IRS isn't exactly sensitive to human needs, and tends to feed insane hate in the unbalanced with its often draconian, unchecked methods.

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

And so it's started....

Local news station today raised the question of whether we need more airspace restriction. Will post a link to the audio clip when I can get it.

And CBS radio news had a soundbite from Congressman McCaul of Texas who is a ranking member of the House homeland security committee pointing out that "we've know since 9/11" that small planes are a hole in our homeland security protection infrastructure.

BOHICA. My bet is new restrictions will be legislated, led by McCaul.

Maybe someone needs to remind him of the OKC bombing. They didn't ban U-Haul trucks when Timothy McVeigh blow up they Federal building in OKC.

Listen to the WTOP report at the link I posted. Apparently the perp in this case was a member of an anti-tax group that's used cars and trucks for this sort of thing before.

The sound bite from McCaul focused on small planes, however.

WTF is this person smoking. Ok, so let's say you put a TFR over the entire US. Every plane has to be in contact with ATC. Fine, whatever.

How exactly would that stop an incident like this one from happening? When you have a pilot, who could conceivably adhere to all the rules, it doesn't matter at that point. He starts descending towards the target, and you decide to launch fighters. Do you really think you'll make it to him before he makes it to the ground?

Unless you require an air marshal on every flight that has a gun to the head of the pilot (might as well do the same for every car and truck on the road too), you're not going to prevent 100% of lunatics from doing lunatic things.

:mad2:

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

Kind of wonder if the guy had IRS troubles why didn't he sell his plane. Obviously he wasn't thinking too clearly, but just damn.

Re: FBI Building Hit By Small Plane

Using the logic of banning all small aircraft from flying over one incident, why could not we just ban all income taxes and the IRS? After all, that is what made him flip.
