Information about Amelia Earhart's location.

I'm trying to watch this, but the super dramatic voices, music and statements (ex: "this is the biggest government cover up in history!!!!!") in the first few minutes is making it really hard to get through. Soooooo dramatized. ugh.

They are talking like it's completely absurd that her tiny little plane wasn't found in a giant ocean.
Yeah, I found the opening a little hard to watch, but later on, it gets better.

It's too bad that they hyped the photo so much, but at least the publicity surrounding the broadcast led someone to dig up its original source.

Having worked with quite a few younger people over the past few years, I can understand or at least believe you not knowing about her. The lack of history knowledge by many folks these days is stunning.
With all due respect to her, a pilot flying around the world is not history. World war is history, assassination of a President is history, atomic bomb on Hiroshima is history. Sorry but flying a plane doesn't even make the top 10. I'm 41 and only know that she tried to fly around the world and disappeared.

It is sad that an aviator doesn't know the name earhart. You have heard of Wilbur and Orville ? How about Lindbergh or Yeager?

Not meaning to give you a hard time, it's just shocking to me.
Does being a recreation pilot mean that I should know the history of aviation? For some reason Orville makes me think of popcorn.

Not all of history is earth-shaking.

Dramatized history. History channel is not so much about history, it's about selling ads, and as we all know, the more exciting you can make it sound....

The other POA thread on this links to this article, establishing that the photo was published in a book in 1935 - two years before she went missing. It also cites a military expert who dates the photograph late 1920s to early 1930s. So, definitely not Amelia.

It's clear the photo was in the book. Can't verify the date, though. And I do keep in mind that the Guardian is not exactly above dramatization itself (and has featured TIGHAR quite prominently).

If anyone has a friend who can read Japanese, then maybe the date of publication of the book could be checked.

True. I really don't believe much of what I see on TV or read on the internet. The title of the book was posted, so I'm sure others will verify it pretty quickly.

It appears that the whole book was posted!

And I bet you'd have to use google to find out the number of US Presidents that have been assasinated and their names, what led to the world wars, and the names of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan and the aircraft that dropped them.

Again, the amount of historical knowledge that certain people possess is pathetically small.

I think that what led to the world wars is a lot more important than the names of bombs and airplanes.

If you don't see the significance Of Earhart, I'd say you haven't paid much attention to the world around you in general.

Well, if she actually had a spy camera on the plane and was working for the US, it would be part of World War and of interest. Yes, conspiracy theory, but if true....

Only know some of the Presidents assassinated, but also don't care much. Politicians deserve what they get in that regard.

Second question: Europe being Europe. LOL. (Okay I know the real reasons the history books give, but think that answer covers it better and is funnier than caring about an Archduke... see answer to number one.)

Fat Man and Little Boy. And of course "The Gadget" pre-dated both.

If you're into nuclear weapons history, recently "Command and Control" popped up as a freebie on Netflix. Not too many people know the USAF launched a 9 megaton bomb out of a silo near Little Rock in the 80s... well, launched by an explosion... from a dropped socket from a socket wrench (a big one)... and didn't know where it went for a while. They found it in the ditch next to the entrance road.

Various other interesting facts in that documentary. Sobering.

The accident rate hidden from even the engineers tasked with safety procedures, wasn't too much of a surprise, though.

Not after a former co-worker described an evening in his former life where he had to tell an airman, "Please get off of the nuclear weapon and stop trying to ride it like a bull. This isn't Dr. Strangelove."

It's a PBS documentary so there's probably other ways to watch it.

May have to pick up Schlosser's book to read it, now that I've seen this.

Yay Broken Arrows...

Somehow I missed both the book and the video coming out.

If you haven't been to the Titan II historical site, it looks worth a visit. I haven't been to Titan II, but have been to the Minuteman site. Still need to do the Trinity open house, some year, too.

If I ever get time, I'd like to get photos at the Rulison and Rio Blanco signage/placards. I know Rio Blanco is accessible, not quite sure about Rulison's big "Active Nuclear Blast Test Site" signage. Always entertaining to have a photo at a sign commemorating us bombing ourselves... and those two are an easy day trip from here. Might be able to do it with the airplane to Rifle, and a rental car even. Just hasn't ever bubbled up to the top of the "I'm bored let's make a road trip" list yet.

So after I got a lot of slack here on POA about my schools not teaching who AE was, (No fault of my own) I decided to attend the Smithsonian Air, Space Museum in Washington DC to learn more about her. Wikipedia doesn't do justice.

Earlier this year I helped out with a history presentation to a bunch of Girl Scouts who were working on their aviation badge. They knew who Amelia Earhart was, but they had never heard of Charles Lindbergh. Neither had some of the moms...

Lindbergh, Lindbergh, Lindbergh....didn't he play Jimmy Stewart in a movie?

Just like the news . . .

I am dismayed.

That being said, a coworker cracked me up recently when a few of us were talking about NASCAR and he referred to Danica Patrick as the Amelia Earhart of NASCAR. Though I don't think it is an accurate comparison, I still laughed.

So... Lincoln deserved to be killed? As did Kennedy?

That's a pretty broad brush you're painting with.

Couldn't care less. Didn't know them. Don't know what they "deserved". Never said anything about that. Know that they were easily replaceable for the job title.

Unless I knew them personally, I wouldn't mourn the death of any politician. Not my people, not interested. And that whole "nation in mourning" crap is just celebrity worship which is definitely something I'd never be interested in.

I'd be more bothered losing a famous musician than a politician. Politicians are a dime a dozen.

"Deserved"? They decided to go into the job. It has its risks. They're eating better every night than I usually do, all just for lying charmingly for a living, so really, zero f***s given.

Maybe the comparison is to a less than average pilot to a less than average driver..??

Where I come from so are musicians. Can't swing a dead cat without hitting a "musician".

And I agree, anyone can be replaced at anytime.

I'm guessing you have a bit of a short term memory loss problem.

Maybe this will help:

"Only know some of the Presidents assassinated, but also don't care much. Politicians deserve what they get in that regard."

Yeah, he meant that coupled with the fact that they both got/get more press and more adoration because of their gender than due to their actual accomplishments. While I agree with that in regards to Danica, I do believe that Amelia actually had a fair amount of success.

I don't know if you're jumping on the "It doesn't matter who's president" bandwagon, but there's little if anything in history to support such a meme.

Fair enough. Lie for a living in an oligarchy, get assassinated... still don't care. I'd vote to remove their security details too. Amazing how much better someone behaves when they're not surrounded by people with guns. Give 'em a nice Prius or F-150 depending which color tie they wear.

Meh. Name one who got it done without Congress. And when you do, I'll say that one abused the power of the Office anyway. Name one that wasn't a blowhard narcissist ******* while you're at it.

Yep, I agree with ya....Amelia did have a lot of success considering the time period.

Danica is a good driver, no mistake about that. But being a good driver does not make it in NASCAR. I know, I tried. Ya gotta be a super fantastic driver to be successful. But what she can do well is attract sponsors. And bringing in the dollars is big in NASCAR.

And that my friend is what is wrong with society today

There are things a president can do without Congress, but the fact that there are initiatives that require their cooperation doesn't prove that it doesn't matter who is president. It's rare for Congress to make major changes without leadership from the White House, and when Congress goes against the policies of a president, the latter has the power of the veto, which has been used many times. Some presidents have been very effective at getting their agendas through Congress, while others have been very ineffective. (I won't name names, in the interest of keeping this from getting too political. ;))

I would also point out that who gets on the Supreme Court VERY MUCH depends on who the president is. The Senate cannot ratify a candidate that the president doesn't nominate.

I don't dispute that politicians have undesirable personal characteristics, but that hasn't stopped some of them from getting things done.

Were any of the moms hot..???
