Be there working this weekend. What is ther to do after hours?

Go stuff your face at a local hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. It's harvest time for green chiles, and those grown in the lower Rio Grande valley are the best on Earth.

I recommend Chile Rellenos, stuffed with cheese and chicken, dipped in sopaipilla batter, and quickly deep fried. Smother them in green chile sauce, add rice and pinto beans on the side, and enjoy.

Most everywhere in the US chile rellenos are made with poblano peppers instead of the Anaheim peppers common in NM. The difference is notable. Poblanos really don't have any flavor, and the Anaheim (which is known simply as a 'green chile' in NM) tastes wonderful by comparison.

Dad always said the way to tell if a Mexican restaurant was worth visiting again was by their chile rellenos.

Don't expect much at the airport, except heat, snattlerakes and coyotes.

And yes, Hatch chiles are the best around. I just can't find any Chile Rellenos here in Homer.

snattlerake...... a snaggle toothed rattlesnake.....:lol::lol::rolleyes2:

Heads up when flying into KLRU. There is a Navy training squadron of about 40 T-34's there. Pattern can get very busy, but the Navy guys will usually yield to civilian aircraft. They use the callsign "Bearcat". Typically they use a left pattern. They practice lots of overheads breaks and wave-offs,

As suggested above, there are many great restaurants to get a taste of the local flavors. You hotel can probably point out the closest ones.

Francis Aviation is an excellent FBO.

It's supposed to cool down this weekend...daytime highs only in the mid-90's. :D

I'm rolling commercial.....on a CRJ right now as a matter of fact.

Las Cruces, you mean? As pointed out, good Mexican (of a style that's not often obtained outside New Mexico...though we have a displaced New Mexican anglo here that makes a reasoanble facsimile in her restaurants). Other than that, I can't say I saw a whole lot other than the Super8 or whatever I was staying in. I was too busy doing security penetration work on WSMR.

Agreed. New Mexico has a "Mexican" food style all their own with an emphasis on local grown chiles! :D

Not true traditional Mexican, and definitely not Tex-Mex. But usually quite spicy and flavorful!! Good stuff. Little hole in the wall mom-and-pop restaurants are the best if you know where to find them.

WSMR? Home of the GPS Outage!!! I knew a guy that worked there. Very cloak and dagger type. Could not discuss his work.

You know, worse comes to worst; you can always hike over to NMSU to oogle the girls.

Everyone is spot on about the green chiles. La Posta in Old Mesilla is one of my favorite restaurants, and they use them in most of their stuff. If you're flying yourself, load up on a case of Hatch chiles to take back with you because they are incredibly cheap there, compared to all the grocery stores around. Make sure they are hermetically sealed because they are rather ... ummm ... aromatic. It's a wonderful smell, but not what you want for 6-10 hours of flying ... or the next 3 years after you take them out.

Yep. Back in the early 80's the Army decided that they were behind the Air Force (and perhaps the Navy) in a few aspects of computer science. One was that they didn't own any real super computers (actually, we at BRL had the Denelcor HEP which we paid to be designed and built to solve fluid dynamics problems much as we had the ENIAC and it's successors built in the 40's and 50's). I spent a lot of time procuring the first bunch of Army supercomputers (An Cray XMP and a Cray 2).

The other thing that the Air Force had was security tiger teams. My boss (who went on to be in charge of the NSFnet and ultimately working for Cisco), volunteered me to the "computer geek" on the tiger team. Everybody else were security officers and the like. I was primed for this as I had run a University computer center back in the seventies when a big student hobby was trying to break security or otherwise crash our timesharing system.

Anyhow, a few days before Christmas I'm in the Super8 in Las Cruces with my GridCompass laptop (anybody remember these things...there's one in the Smithsonian along with three or four of the other computers I worked on). I quickly penetrated the computer security while our other team members were breaking physical security. Of course, I found that they had put out a warning online that there were people hanging around the facility that ought not to be there and was able to to tip off our people. Near the end they wanted to know if I wanted to try my hand at physical security. Knowing how these places work, I entered the facility after most people left but before they started locking things up tight. Bluffed my way in, went into an office, powered up a machine, logged in (with one of my purloined accounts), sent an email thanking the WSMR personnel for their hospitality, shut things down and left.

I hear for years anything anything happened to their computers, I got the blame. It was a little more fun than breaking into the depots (though we did cause a bit of consternation when they found out we'd manage to insert a fake shipping order into the system and get an item shipped. They were suspecting we sent a tank to Hawaii or something, but in fact, we just had a spark plug sent to the headquarters building in Alexandria of the command we were working for). The depot refused to take it back after the event.

The only thing I know about Las Cruces is member Don Jones is there, real nice guy who build an RV.
Oh, and a neighbor got shot (well, his car) while driving through.

I found La Nueva Castita Cafe on Mesquite St.

Man......I wish we had places like that in AR. I had stacked enchiladas with green sauce, boracho beans and horchata. Real horchata finally.

Gonna try and source some chilies to take home. Any ideas where?

Oh man, I'm hungry from reading the words 'stacked enchiladas'. :D

I would ask around to find a source for chiles. There's prolly a mom and pop market in town that sells them. Try and find someplace that offers sorted peppers. If you aren't used to eating green chiles and get some that are too hot, you won't enjoy the flavor.

I was born in Albuquerque and now I live in Texas. Tex-Mex is just awful stuff. There's just one place in Plano that has green chile rellenos.

Its getting better, though. In August several markets and restaurants now have 'green chile month' and we go get our fill of the wonderful stuff.

Nice thing about green chiles is that it can go on breakfast, lunch or dinner foods. Great taste that goes just about anywhere.
The only McDonalds I will eat at are in NM, where they will have green chiles to go on your Big Mac.

Welcome to New Mexico!

We're still part of the old west here .... :(

For the record, I've never been shot in New Mexico although I've made numerous trips there.

I understand that Nick was hit by a car there though....

Stuff like that happens. I believe he was staggering down the middle of northbound I-25 in the middle of Albuquerque at 7AM on a Thursday morning, buck naked drinking a 16oz Pabst Blue Ribbon and singing Bohemian Rhapsody.

I think that's what the news story said.

Something like that.

I think.

:D

was he singing on key?

What a waste of coleslaw.....

Found Chopes Cafe tonight in La Mesa........ I don't think it gets any better boys. Started off with a queso dip which is like no other. No velveta here. Then, I killed a number four; green enchilada, red enchilada, chile relleno and a beef taco.

Over to Si Seniors in a few..... A. Trifecta of excellent food is on my agenda!

La Posta is the place to eat. If you don't go there, don't come back here...

Seriously, It is a 6 hour drive for me and we try to go there once a month. (or an hour flight)

Well.....Si Senior, um, sucks. Nothing tasted good to me. It was all commercial. Commercial beans, tortillas, all of it. I won't be back.

I'm outa here at 0800 hours so maybe there will be a next time. Till then, I'm Audi-5000

Yer killing me...I need to go see my dad in Rio Rancho and do some eating while I'm there! :D
