    What's your IFR flight workflow?

It kind of depends on the distance and how much notice I have. A week out, I start looking at the long range forecasts - mainly just the Weather Channel (although I will watch the news), just to get a big picture of the upcoming weather trends . 3 days out I switch to...

When you land at bigger airports, Do you get pressured to land quickly

Happened to me last week landing at KLEX in the Saratoga. Approach: Can you give me a little more speed, I am going to put you in before a CRJ. I was indicating about 160 in my descent, a quick glance at my ground speed showed 187. My pilot/passenger in the right seat smiled and said; "don't...

ATC: "Please Verify You Are A VFR Flight"

STARS is integrated into ERAM so the information coming across is the same. The FAA's goal is to have all of the TRACON legacy systems replaced by 2020. I think the target was to have 80% of the Terminals on STARS by next summer.

    New Car-Ford Edge

I have a '12 Edge that I got new. I love it. It is comfortable, quick, descent mileage, and I like the Sync system. I haven't had a single issue with it, and I will replace it with another Edge. I drove Mountaineers for years. Even though it is a little smaller, the responsiveness, handling and...

    F-15 VFR at 5500

Many, many years ago, I was flying up and down the Chicago lake front when Meigs Tower (I did say it was a long time ago) gave me a traffic alert of two approaching F-16's making a high speed pass along the lake shore. I was about to reply letting them know I was going to get out of there, when...

    Phone clearance or in air

My home airport is uncontrolled. At home: If it is VMC for at least 20 miles, I get my clearance in the air. IMC - I taxi, do my run up and call directly into Chicago Aporoach using my Bluetooth connection from my headset. I let them know I am at the runway ready to go. I generally get...

    Anyone carry sectionals anymore?

430, IPad, IPad, IPhone. If the approach is going to be in IMC, I will print out plates. I recall more than once dicovering the night before a long X-C that the airport is just off the edge of all the sectionals that I had just received from Sporty's. It wasn't so bad when you could walk...

    First right seat landings

I think it is turning the bottom of the wheel vs the top. In the Piper the trim is mounted on the floor between the seats. So you "push" the wheel forward or "pull" the wheel back In the Beech, you are doing the opposite. I can't decide if it is that the Piper correlates better to...

    First right seat landings

The trim in the Debonair is hidden behind the yoke and the panel. With my right hand I can trim up and down automatically. When I use my left hand, I have to consciously think which way is which and even then get it wrong much of the time. It is a non issue for me in the Saratoga.

How many were low actual time IFR?

I had zero actual when I got my IR (despite telling myself I wouldn't do that before I started). Lots of simulator time (including some in a full motion simulator). My first flight after getting the ticket was a flight where I climbed through the clouds, and flew an approach down to about...

Clearance through LM or call approach on phone

Unless it is below basic VFR. I always pick up my clearance in the air from Chicago TRACON. They may have a routing change, but 99% of the time the clearance is the same: Cleared to xxx, via radar vectors, (first fix), then as filed. Fly heading xx. As long as you know what first fix to...

    IFR and auto pilot

I did 90% of my IR work in a very nice 172 with a 2 axis autopilot. However it also had a KLN94, and I hated that unit so much, that I chose to do my check ride in an old 172 with no GPS, no autopilot, and one NAV/Com. It was about as basic an IFR platform as you can get. I actually told my...

Sleep Apnea - new FAA Guidelines to AME - be prepared!

Just had my medical this past week. I was surprised when he said he was going to screen for sleep apnea. He asked if I had ever been told I snored, stopped breathing in my sleep, or fell asleep during the day (all no's). We talked about my BMI (27). That was about it.

Video of SixPapaCharlie in his new Cirrus!

If the N number and the date on the Youtube video are accurate. It looks like the owner was in the middle of a suit against Cirrus at the time. I wasn't able to find the original compliant, just the dissmisal order. http://dockets.justia.com/docket/nevada/nvdce/2:2009cv01108/67012

    Say type Bonanza

Same here. Center and approach controllers mostly say November xxxx. Towers seem to be more apt to say Debonair/Bonanza. I have tried switching to Bonanza when they start it but it is so automatic, that by the second or third call I tend to revert back to Debonair. Flightaware lists the...

    Hypothetical IFR question

I flew out of the same airport near Chicago for about 15 years. Early on I got to know a fellow pilot in passing. I knew he flew quite a few cross countries for work, and I had even hitched a ride with him on a fairly solid IMC day up to Oshkosh. He was a solid pilot, no complaints, his...
