"Regional Approach" vs "Lone Star Approach"?

It was "Regional," because DFW was originally named "DFW Regional Airport"; that name went by the wayside many moons ago, so the "Regional" name has no logical anchor to the airspace other than inertia and habit (which, to be honest, could have probably been enough to justify keeping it, but... y'know).

I'm calling it "Lone Star" now, and the controllers are answering about 50-50 Regional/Lone Star.

I don't think the FAA would do that... But when Lockheed Martin gets control of the newly privatized ATC system, they're going to put all the controllers in one big warehouse and we can just call them "Big Brother Center".

I can hope we'll get something cool though. After all, there's now Great Lakes Approach, Lone Star Approach, Razorback, Potomac, and maybe a few others that aren't just a boring city name.

A couple that come to mind are Joshua and Big Sky.

"Airventure" was coined (and more importantly, registered) because EAA couldn't control the use of "Oshkosh", as on T-shirts and other show memorabilia, and the resulting revenue stream derived therefrom.

Localisms like the one you're talking about are fairly typical. I interviewed for a job in Pittsburgh once and was told about those who had worked for "the company" -- US Steel.

What would happen if you called them "{a really bad word} approach?"

Sure. it's the wrong name, but it's also not very polite. Would they give you a phone number to call?

It's like that old joke that was a true story: After long delays on the taxiway, and airliner was given instructions to hold for just a few more minutes. "********!" was the response, and when asked if that airliner had said that, every aircraft on frequency came back with "Negative on the ********."

Unless it's one easy word like "Bay" or "NorCal" and sometimes not even then, it's just "Approach." And while we all get assigned departure frequencies by clearance on the ground, at best maybe the first transition from TWR to DEP frequency is "contact departure" but after that they are all "contact xxx approach" by ATC. Often the names get abbreviated by the locals or frequent users of the facility, and out-of-towners might not know the lingo, so back to "Approach."

I really want to hear the LiveATC recording of the first person to announce "Lone Star, my radar has been jammed!" Or when told to make best speed, reply "Roger, going to Plaid"

Perhaps the DOT could find corporate sponsors for all of the non-monetized nomenclature that appears on aeronautical charts.

"'Black Tire LLC' Approach, Bonanza 422 is clear of 'Big Box Stores', descending to 3,000, request straight in 'Pharma For You Dot Com'."
