Dan Gryder banned from Airventure

The whole thing, all of it, by all parties, falls in the general category of silliness. Such silliness has always existed, but thanks to the internet, we are far more aware of the silliness in our world. I'm not complaining, I like to laugh.

It is. There’s an episode where he fails at dining and dashing from a Chinese restaurant. That’s an image from the show.

Holy s****. Of course EAA has a right to admit or refuse individuals at will, but publically calling them out like that borders on defamation.
Defamation is the act of communicating false statements about someone that harm their reputation. He was banned from the event. That isn’t false and no other statements were issued.

Interesting that a Bruce Baier appears in the 2010 EAA annual report as a museum volunteer. Now I'm really curious what happened with that one!

Doesn't have to actually win to cost EAA. Witness Campbell's two lawsuits against Sun-N-Fun, over his own banning. Lost them both, but S-N-F had to pay for years of lawyer time.
And this is why we have anti-SLAPP laws. Although they're not perfect.

How does a private entity publicly banning someone defame them in any way?

What I find interesting is Gryder publishing videos of himself trespassing.
And admitting to felonies.

"Koepnick was asked to leave the EAA grounds July 28 when he was found scavenging through trash bins and residing at a campground after the event had ended, EAA Spokesman Dick Knapinski said." (2015)
Hmmm... I wonder if scavenging (recycling) through some bins you can find some junked Dynon/AFS/Garmin avionics. Good thing I did not go this year

I think the red was the issue, not the dumpster diving.

Don't take my comment too seriously. I was daydreaming.

I know. I just thought it was odd the way they worded it, it definitely made it sound like dumpster diving was the issue.

Apparently around the same time he also tried to raise money for a fake nonprofit, stole a car, and forged a check.

Good intentions and all that, but the problem is, publishing the shot is probably gonna cost EAA money and efforts to deal with Dan... again.
It's going to cost Dan money and effort, too. By the time he files appeals to the judgments already against him I have to believe he will be short on cash, if he isn't already. How much was that recent judgment against him?

He doesn’t have the money to pay for lawyers now and is defending himself in some of his cases.

Dumpster diving for copies of credit card receipts is profitable.

Recovering items returned for credit or exchanged for functioning replacements is also profitable.

Local Police arrested two guys having a fist fight over which was going to get first dive of a bank dumpster.

A lot of reasons to ban someone for dumpster diving.

Looks like he's now a favored expert commentator of the Cowboy State Daily as well. 19 DG name hits in the two latest articles last week.

Of course, that then gets amplified in other media as well.

Hell, that Cowboy State Daily article first linked above read like a transcript of DG's latest video, which I'm ashamed to admit I watched.

Seems like much of the so-called "media" is in simply search of click-bait sensationalism, and if that's what you're after then it seems like Gryder's your man.

Isn’t Oshkosh a public airport. How can the EAA bann anyone??

If a person is officially trespassed and whatever required paperwork is issued and filed, is it not in the public domain?

It is not in the public domain because no judicial finding was made. The trespass warning is evidence and there will be a police report associated.

If you knew which police agency took the report, if the offense wasn’t classified as an on going investigation and you enough details to request the report, it is public record that you can obtain.

Probably can't ban them from the airport, but they can ban him from the grounds EAA leases for the event. So, in theory, Dan could legally visit Basler, but would be persona non-grata on show grounds.

The airport authority and EAA basically have a lease agreement for AirVenture. This agreement allows EAA regulate the entry of spectators and vendors into the event.

The trespass list depicted in post 1 says banned from EAA building and AirVenture, not the airport. Once a banned person passes an entry where a ticket is required, they entered property leased to the EAA. Once the event is over, the airport is once again public and the EAA only controls its buildings.

The thing is that the airport is owned by the county and street are public streets, so if you are on the airport owned property or a public street that runs though the event does a ban apply?

Dan Grider in a recent video claims there are 500 letters to banned people sent already who else is on the list?

Think about your local fairgrounds. The county (or city) owns the property, but the fair leases the grounds and charges admission. And presumably can prohibit certain individuals from entering. Same thing for your local Civic Center. Even your local High School football stadium is publicly owned, but someone controls access.

Look at it this way.

If a concert hall is owned by a city, does that mean anyone can just enter and attend a concert, or can the organizer require attendees to have a ticket?

Similar situation. The EAA can require attendees to have a ticket for the show, and they can certainly have a “ban” list of people who are ineligible to get tickets.

LOL, you can be banned from public entities...my local library has a banned list posted on the door.
There are YouTube videos of First Amendment "auditors" who try to make video recordings in publicly-owned buildings in violation of posted restrictions, or of court rules in some cases, and end up tangling with police.

The Campbell vs. Sun-n-Fun case went into this is pretty good detail. Campbell claimed a First Amendment violation; SnF couldn't ban him, since the function was on public property. The judge noted that "Putting on airshows is not a function of government" and upheld the ban.

One amusing story says that Campbell managed to convince the local FAA that the ban could NOT apply to his attending FAA seminars, and that Campbell would have to be let onto the grounds to attend the FAA meetings. SnF responded by threatening to move the FAA seminars outside of the show perimeter, and leaving access crowd control to the government.

I read the entire 99-page transcript of his filing for an "Emergency" injunction to attempt to get into the show one year. Fascinating. Now, who can I get to pay for my time?

Yes. They are in cahoots with Winnebago County for the parts of the show that are on the airport. The EAA however owns over 1000 acres (about the size of the airport property itself) adjacent to the county land that is exclusively theirs as well. Captain Zoom went through this with SnF. The tenant operation and airport does have the authority to ban people.

Gryder says things that aren’t true every day. And you believe this statement?

He is trying to say, see, they banned hundreds. But he is on a list with one page full is all

And the names on that one page are in alphabetical order, and ends with someone named "Sullivan". Not likely there are more than a couple more names.
