July 18-22 is the Short Wing Piper Convention in Vancover, Washington. I’m going.  I’m taking kind of a mega-vacation and have about 10 days to get there from Michigan and 10 days to get home. On July 8, I’m headed to Delphi IN. Then the next day , to Dodge City KS. That will take me pretty close to Diane’s place (Hint, hint:rolleyes:). After that everything becomes weather dependent. I’d like to go to Leadville, CO, then head south and around to Farmington NM and the four corners area, over to Page, AZ and maybe catch some of the Grand Canyon. From there, up the Colorado river to the Green River and a strip called Mineral Canyon UT. Then over the Bonneville salt flats and probably to Jackpot NV. Next, up towards Pocatello ID, back across the Craters of the Moon, then up into the hills at Hailey. I’d like to get to Johnson creek and probably Big Creek ID (a fellow from this area owns the lodge there). Then up Hell’s canyon and over towards Coulee Dam then down to the Columbia river to Vancover WA .

On the way back I kind of plan on roughly taking the Oregon trail backwards, and stopping off at Oshkosh for a few days.

I would appreciate any suggestions :dunno: on “must see” places, “must eat at” places , “must land at” places, and any thing else that sounds fun. Also CHEAP is good.

I’ve got a 160 hp Tripacer with wingtips and vortex generators, One person and gear. My plane likes grass and gravel, it doesn’t have an opinion on gopher holes but doesn’t much like woodchuck holes. The plane and I are IFR rated but this is a Sight seeing trip so the plan is VFR all the way.

Again, any and all suggestions are appreciated and if anyone out that way has time for a cup of coffee or a coke let me know.:cheerswine:

Do you have a special reason for wanting to visit Jackpot, NV? It's an interesting place to land and the casino/hotel is within walking distance. I didn't see much else there. IIRC there's a mesa you need to be careful of at one end.

The picture is of the FBO. The hotel is a highrise nearby. I think Mickey Dolenz was the headliner the day I was there.

Sounds like a fantastic cross country! I am jealous.

No particular reason other than I've just got 2 airports left to land at in Michigan and thought I'd start trying to tally up a landing in every state. And someone else mentioned the hotel/casino was close.

Well, Jackpot is probably as good as any place in north NV for that. The hotel is not expensive nor is the food (or wasn't when I was there) so that's in your favor.

Barb, I hope you plan to come visit us and stay at the farm. :)

My husband used to own a 160 hp Tripacer. He loved that airplane. Flew it in and out of the farm when he first moved here.

Gotta stop at Bryce and see the "many men standing in round canyon" and at Zion where the uplift was diagonal....

If you stop at APA on your way thru Colorado let me know. Sometimes I'm a little hard to schedule with, though, so it's hit or miss. APA pretty far on the other end of the spectrum from grass and gravel but there are lots of small airplanes here. Lots of planes, period.

Barb,

There's lot's of pics/videos of & around Big Creek on my website : MOUNTAINFLYINGVIDEOS.com and your plane can handle many of them when light enough & good DA. Big Creek's good to unload gear then go & bag the difficult ones nearby.

And, if you get to Seattle, let me know & I'll treat you to a flight over to the Islands for lunch or something if you like !

Sounds like a great voyage.

Best of Luck !

I was fascinated with Meteor Crater very close to the Grand Canyon.
No map here; is your route passing near Mt Rushmore? Its on my list.
Sedona?
Judy can give you the scoop on Idaho.

Meteor Crater is pretty cool. It's near Winslow, AZ.

There's also Monument Valley which has its own little airport. I think Monument Valley is much more impressive from the ground than from the air.

OLM is just a quick flight north of Vancouver. And PWT is just a bit further north. The cafe on the field has great fish and chips. Of course, you'll have to fly around Mount St. Helens while you're in the area. Just be aware of the TFR around the mountain. If you plan on coming up to Olympia, let me know and perhaps we can get together. My wife and I will be getting back from Hawaii on the 19th, so some time after your event in Vancouver is over?

BTW :

There's a mountain strip fly-in (6/11 & 12) & BBQ (6/11) at Shearer, Idaho this coming weekend put on pro bono by some pilots from the Recreational Aviation Foundation, & Montana & Idaho Pilots' Associations. All they ask for ice.

It's a difficult, one way strip with obstacles in all quadrants. Moose Creek is much more manageable, about 12 miles away.

Overflying Shearer on 122.9 should get people a ferry ride from Moose if they desire, or walk the river trail ! We're expecting 20 Super Cub class planes.

On the webboard, I was helping Carol with a file of 'Cool Places to See' or 'Must Fly To's'; does POA have a place where we can post such files for reference? It covered most of these places and the Q will get asked again in a month no doubt.
There are other files we need to be able to point people to.... Bruce's Ice Recipe, Troy had a neat algorithm on what is loggable/legal PIC, Rev's checkride Prep.

If you can swing a stop at the Black Hills in South Dakota, that is worth a stop. We flew up to Custer, S.D. (KCUT) yesterday. As we live in the Denver, CO area it was only a 1:45 flight. Mount Rushmore is very close as is the Custer State forest and old mining towns like Deadwood are little farther away, but close to a another airport in Spearfish, SD. In general, I found the Black Hills beautiful and the airport manager even lent us HIS old Jeep to use for the day.

I wish I could suggest Albuquerque, but unfortunately, there's just not a lot to do here, unless you're looking for one of the best Breakfast Burritos you'll get anywhere (and surprisingly, its available at the airport restaurant). At least if you go to Farmington, you can go check out the Four Corners Monument.

Of course, if you come to Albuquerque, you can meet me :)

Thanks for all the replies. I've got my charts out and checking locations.

Dave Krall and Ghery--What do you guys know about Copalis? It sounds like an interesting stop too.

Diane-- I'm hoping to be close to your place Saturday July 9 about noon.

Anthony - you should have told me you were going up! Could have gotten you a personal tour of the hills and maybe even lunch thrown in to boot from one of the bunch of relatives in Custer... :) Glad you enjoyed your trip!

Barb,
If you're going to be near Pocatello, try Rexburg. Pete and I stopped there a few years ago, and met the owner of the FBO. His name escapes me at the moment, but he became a CFI back in 1946, the year our Stinson was born. I wish I could have spent more time chatting with him.

And if you have a chance, stop by Cashmere (8S2) we can take you over to the Barbarian Village (Leavenworth, WA Bavarian Village....) for lunch or dinner, or if you need a place to crash for the night, we have an extra room as well. No fuel at Cashmere, but Pangborn (EAT) is right down the street.

Thanks Greg. We got a late start and it was kind of spur of the moment. Trying to get my wife up on weekends is a major PITA. We didn't take off until 11:00 and by the time we got the plane settled at CUT it was 1:00 - 1:30. Our tour lasted basically form 3:00 - 6:00 after we ate. It was my first time seeing Mt. Rushmore. I think we're going to go back for a weekend to really see the sites. I'll let you know! Real friendly folks there and lots to see and do.

(sorry to hijack the thread)

Sounds great! We'll have lunch for you. Hope you can stay awhile, even overnight if you have time. :)

Copalis is so cool when the tides out a little but (tidesonline.com), land very softly with your best soft field because usually it's firm but, every now & then it'll nose you over with a flip to your back in the sand ! No camping anymore.

BTW, the Stewart Bros are based at Cashmere. They specialize in SWP's. they have a couple of beautiful Pipers sitting around, and I'm sure they will be in Vancouver as well.

Off limits to our club's planes. We're restricted to paved runways, and Copalis is anything but.

I'd recommend a fly by at a few hundred feet AGL before commiting to land to make sure that there aren't any obstructions on the sand (people, animals, driftwood, etc). Low tide, or thereabouts so you have wet, relatively firm, sand to land on. Landing on the dry stuff will put you on your back. And, don't forget to leave before the tide comes back in and covers the 'runway'. Then find a field with a wash rack to get the salt and sand out of the airframe.

Even if you don't land there, it's worth a visit and low pass. Ocean Shores is just a few miles to the south, as is Hoquiam (and Lana's cafe).

I meet them at last year's convention at Soo, MI. I'm using some of their advice to get through the mountains. They wrote up some nice reports on three fairly scenic ways across.

Barb .. if you get by Lincoln, NE give me a heads up and we'll sure

Barb if you get tired on the way home stop at PIA we'll put your bird in a HANGAR and you in a bed....

The "Brothers", as I call them, are some of the nicest guys around. Doug and Dan built our Stinson and they even helped me out machining a new fuel drain plug from my Mercedes. I enjoy going to the airport in the evenings and sitting on Dan and Margies porch and chatting. And there is always something neato to look at in one of their hangars.

I was planning on it. Could you email me a phone number. I'll give you a call when I get closer. Probably will be there around July 26-27, give or take a day.
My prop has already been out there. Jim Fix fixed it last winter. So finding Lincoln should be easy, just follow my prop!

Man, I don't know if my plane would know what to do in a REAL hangar. It has one now that fits like a glove---with a few finger tips missing.

Jackpot usually has the lowest price fuel in a four state area.

Swing into Westwind Air Tours and Charter when you get to Page and say hi!

Barb,

If you need a fuel stop just inside MO on your way to Diana's, stop at KUUV( Sullivan) fuel is $2.75. If you decide to stop, let me know and I will come out and introduce myself. If the FBO has his Stearman out, maybe you can talk him into a ride.

Thanks, I will be needing fuel somewhere in that area.

I'd agree completely with your list but, flying the seacliffs, canyons and volcanoes of The Hawaiian archipelago in a small plane, absolutely must be added, unless I missed its listing !

Wasn't on the list, but I'll second the suggestion.
