Why is it when I look at that rifle I feel like I'm witnessing a crime in progress?:rofl:

Back off guys, I'm a second ammendment nut too. :nono:

It had to be somewhere.

Just remember: third world peasants use AKs. Elite experts use AR-15s. :)
But do those peasants need laptops to reassemble their weapons? ;)

On a visit to the People's Republic of China I had the opportunity to visit a People's Liberation Army base and their firing range. While there I shoot a few rounds. This is me with the AK-47. I also shot the 14.5mm Anti-Aircraft gun, a captured M-16, and a few handguns.

Jay I once a pic of you with your AK, post that one.

That was before I got my AR-15. :)

The AK is a perfectly fine weapon that will take an incredible amount of abuse and keep right on going. Gospodin Kalashnikov got it right, definitely. OTOH, the AR-15 can be shot for much longer and leave you ready for more.

The line about peasants and experts was written by SF/military fiction author Mad Mike Williamson, and his article on The Ten Manliest Firearms and the follow-on 10 More Manly Guns are must reading.

On that outing to the PLA base my friend really wanted to shoot the M16. Having shot more rounds on that weapon than any other I really did not feel the desire to shoot more with it.

But he did, so it got pulled out. he had some fun with and then handed it to me. I shot 10 rounds, made two site adjustments and then proceeded to put the next 50 rounds into the black until there basically was no more black. I handed the weapon back to him and said "see, I told I had shot this before", he was absolutely stunned.

Nice. I ripped apart an old Remington Nylon 66 (1959, first year of production) the other day and finally got it back together last night. Hopefully it'll shoot reliably now.

What does it cost to build up an AR-15 these days?

If you've already got a stripped lower receiver, about $700-900. Since the election, however, the stripped lowers themselves have become unobtainium; if you don't already have one, you won't be able to get one for a year, minimum. (The reasons why are SZ material.) I'd planned to build one or two up, but had to give up and buy a completed rifle instead, because I just couldn't get a lower to build on.

Just build your lower!!!! it's a learning experience!

Here is a good tutorial on one method!

Leah says that us crazy pilots just talk about flying when we're not flying...

Nice big rifle but why do they think it's worth so much money?
Name, mostly, and most of those .50 BMG rifles are pretty pricey.

My favorite thing about Barret:
When California banned the sale of their rifles (.50 BMG) to California citizens, Barret responded by saying it would no longer sell to or support any California government agency.

...and, as Mad Mike Williamson tells the story, sent one back to LAPD, unrepaired, with a note to that effect.

What'dya know, a gun thread without a bunch of hayseeds drooling over the prospect of shooting some villainous intruder. You guys rock!

That's as sad as a non-flying shooting enthusiast wandering into this site expecting to see all rich, cigar smoking, caviar eating private pilot playboys ... not quite sure how to take this ...

Generally when I'm not flying, working, or doing my laundry, I try to get some sleep.

I work with my hands all day (I'm a picture framer) so coming home and making things just does not seem to relax me. My best escape from all of this is my little Warrior.

JOOC does the ATF require any kind of license to "Bend up" a receiver??? I'd assume they'd be interested in it if it were full auto.

For personal use nothing is required except for following USC 922R compliance on the build.

Screw all that, get something that shoots real Ammo...

Anything under .50 cal is smallbore! Oh, yeah, I shoot muzzleloaders, and the only deer I ever got was with my repro 1863 Springfield Rifle-Musket (.58 cal :D ). We kept referring to 7.62 mm as "sub-caliber training devices". :D :D

I almost bought a Swedish 20mm gun, but it was just too big and heavy.
