what to do with a part that has "core value" when you don't need it

Hi all. Here comes a strange-to-me question. I needed an unobtanium crankshaft that we ordered through Continental/Boeing and the ship date continued to push. In the meantime I found a used/serviceable crank from an airparts supplier that didn't offer a core discount. Engine went back together and months have passed, but in the meantime we had left the order open partly just out of curiousity whether it would ever actually ship (at one point it was out to 2026 ship date). Anyway, the ship date just changed to today and now I don't know what I should do. Using round numbers I believe the new crank is $13,500 and the core discount is $4000. (For context I believe we paid about $9k for the refurbed one we ended up using). I can't imagine the right answer is to buy the new one I don't need and auction it off, however ?????

Any advice or suggestions? Thank you.

@TCABM are you suggesting I post the core on there, or buy the new one and post that?

Whatever you already have that you want to sell, put it up there.

If you’re asking would I spend $money to get the crank shipped so I could sell it on Barnstormers for $money, that answer is no.

Buying the new one when you don't need it would make no sense to me, unless you want to roll the dice with arbitrage and hope someone is desperate enough for a new one to pay you substantially more than you paid for it.

Selling your old one when it does have value to someone else but none to you does make sense to me.
 
I'm not sure I would risk spending $9500 (13,500 minus the 4000 core) in hopes that someone might buy it for more than that. There is a very big chance you will end up spending $9500 just to watch the thing sit on your shelf. Instead I would consider trying to sell the core itself. You may or may not find someone who needs a core and would be willing to pay you less than the 4k they would get for it when buying a new crank and sending it in for credit but at least you aren't out money while you try to find a buyer. I think your chances of someone wanting to buy the new crank for more than $9500 because they don't have a core themselves to send in is pretty low and a big gamble.
 
I see the dilemma here. I’m not sure anybody is going to pay for it as core. One because why would they? Odds are they have a core if they need a crank. And they have no assurance it’s actually worth anything as a core.

Seems to me like someone that doesn’t have a core already would rather buy the new crank. Nobody actually wants a core, they want a useable part.
 
Given the crazy lead times for parts like that, I suspect Continental would be happy to cancel the order.
 
Put it on ebay for a enough less than the core value for it to be worthwhile for somebody who needs a crank and doesn't have a serviceable core. Or an airboater might use it as is.

So you still have your old core, and can get the new, unobtainable, crank for $9,500 + the core? If that's the case, I'd buy and flip that sucker. If the lead times are still over a year, someone will absolutely pay retail + for a new one today.

Unserviceable core = AMT Training Aid

Many orgs with 501c-3 status will accept for that purpose.

Props, engines , aircraft are donated and a deduction taken based on value

A crack may be overlooked.
