Got my pound dog 6 years ago. Our pound cat just took his bed.

Hey, Nate,

Finally...just this morning...I had a chance to read this thread to our three rescue mutts and show them the photos of Dino.

They were impressed and asked that I send you their thoughts.

BEAUTIFUL !!! :):)

How noble of you to pay for it on your own! Looks like you got a real keeper there, Nate!

I like mutts, man. Nothing like a good, old fashioned dog! My little bud, Doug, came from the pound. He can be a handful, but he's a smart fella and a real lover. He's a bit anxious when we leave. I see you use the peanut butter in the Kong trick. It always works for me.

No, it's not that noble... $40 for the meds. I'd be crazy if I thought that was going to be the highest Vet bill in his life. :)

$40 will pay in some little way for a little time for the shelter's current residents and sadly, they are a kill shelter, but everything I've read is that it's done only as a last-resort. They'll hand over animals to rescue groups if they can first.

And $40 doesn't even buy an hour worth of AvGas. No biggie.

I agree with you on mutts. They're great.

Certain breeds lend well to being purebreds in truly working dogs, and some have benefits for folks with allergies, but that's a relatively rare need for someone just getting a housepet.

I like da mutts. They're more like me. :)

Don't get me started on vet bills......

I am a animal lover like the rest of us... BUT...

A few years back my ex went to Colorado and rescued 2 St Bernards... They were sweet dogs but the ex was not too smart about spending money.....

During the big D, I was going through all the cancelled checks and in a 5 year period there were 20,000+ $$$ in vet bills..3/4 of that was to Colo vet clinic/ university in C0 Springs... a staggering amount to me.....

One dog had a limp.. he got 3 knee surgeries,, still limped... Turned out to be a nerve root tumor on his spine. Poor thing died a week after we took him to the local hospital for an MRI where they confirmed my suspicion... I told them all along that it appeared like a neurological issue....

Yeah. With a one year old we're debating the pet insurance route. Probably won't. But a surgery bill can get big, fast.

Dino says, "Good Morning!"

True intelligence in those eyes. And a bit of the devil may care attitude!.

Heh... it was mostly annoyance that I wanted him to look at the camera for the photo. At that point I had four photos of him with eyes closed, looking off in the distance, etc... when I said, "Hey bud, look at me..."... that's what I got. LOL!

The topic of food came up earlier. Here's my $0.02...we have 4 dogs ranging in age from 4 months to 10 years. We used to feed Taste of The Wild but with 4 dogs, well, it gets a bit pricey. For the past year or so we've switched to Nature's Domain (red sack) from Costco. The food is excellent and grain free. We noticed an immediate positive change in fur quality on the adults and the pup is growing perfectly. None of the dogs have experienced the slightest amount of GI problems. I give 16 paws up (4 dogs) for the stuff.

Pilot.Dude...the only downside that I see with that food is that it's a Diamond product. They've definitely had their share of issues/recalls over the years which (IIRC) stems from their mfgr'ing plant being so far removed (East Coast) from their corporate offices (here in MO) and they struggle w/quality control because of it.

With that said, this appears to be pretty good stuff and if we had a Cosco closeby I'd check it out. But we don't.

Tim - producer is definitely a consideration. One can only hope they learned their lesson and have tightened QC. From my reading of Diamond, they seem to have made the necessary improvements.

Well, being the MO boy that I am, we've fed a LOT of various Diamond foods to our mutts over the years and haven't had one die from it yet! :)

When the current bag gets halfway down, we'll try the new stuff.

Ah....Puppy Bowl just came on. Gotta go get the popcorn & drinks and chewsticks.

Haven't updated in a while.

Dino has been great. He got to meet dad once, the morning he passed away. Dad joked that he was his "grand dog, but don't you dare call me grandpa". Good memory.

He's been gaining weight since we got him. Giardia from the pound all cleared up and he was finally processing all of that food he was taking in. Last weigh in, 73 lbs. He's a big boy.

The nutty schedule, driving between two houses, and what not right after that fateful day, and some separation anxiety problems, including chewing up some inappropriate things... had the Vet and I concerned that we needed to break that cycle, so he's on a low dose of anti-anxiety meds, with the intent to wean him off of them in two months time.

He starts obedience training and will get a chance to be heavily socialized with other dogs the first week of April, since things are finally settling down with Dad's Estate paperwork. (Tax info is finally all into the accountant... Yay. Now to do mine... Boo...)

Somewhere in the middle of all this, he somehow scratched one of his nipples. Yep, my dog has a nipple injury. You can all laugh now. That was a little over a week ago, so he's had four Vet visits in less than two months.

Antibiotics after a smear confirmed he had a dog-only infection and he's already mostly healed up, but Doc was concerned about him licking it (more jokes here, my dog is a pervert) and she thought his anxiety would really shoot sky high with the "cone of shame", so since he's enormous, she recommended a regular old t-shirt. So my dog has been wearing my gun club and aviation t-shirts around the house. Even funnier, he likes having one on, and will run up and sit at your feet any time you pick a t-shirt out of the drawer now, waiting for you to put it over his head. Haha.

I really don't want to be "that guy" who dresses his damn dog up, but the doofus loves having one on, and is noticibly calmer and happier (lower anxiety) when he does. So he may get a t-shirt collection. Fit now he has the Gun Club, an OV-1 reunion, and an Oshkosh shirt... Haha. What a fashion statement.

Anyway, he's doing great and we are looking forward to obedience training with one of the oldest dog training companies in Colorado (family has been training dogs since the late 1950's here continuously through multiple generations).

Here's some photos of the dude. Just for fun and updates. We are really glad to have another dog, another very active dog too, and how we ended up going bigger... we don't know. Haha. He's a horse.

Yawning at the humans one morning at dad's old place... We are still deciding if we want to become "country" folk and move out there. It's about 45 minutes out of Denver Metro on good weather days and we did some commuting during the recent bad weather and it wasn't that bad.

Waiting for Karen to come back in the room one evening... It bothers him when we aren't in the same room still, and if that door was open he'd go back and forth incessantly between us. Vet mentioned that he may have been a single person owner dog when a pup and he's not sure what to do when the "pack" isn't all in the same place.

Under dad's huge model train layout he was working on.

The monster cage crate... Big enough to hold pay per view cage death matches in on the side.

The view from the corner of the property of the country house on one of our morning walks/patrols out there after a snow. He really likes it out there, and would like it better with a fence. He heard his first rooster and cocked his head sideways and stared at the neighbor's barn for a solid 30 seconds wondering what the heck THAT was... Haha...

Name & phone of the trainer? Murf needs some remedial work.

re: the shirt calming him ... I've seen or read about a stress relieving jacket for dogs but kind of pooh-poohed it as a Boulderite kind of thing. Sounds like it works!

The rescue where we got our greyhounds swears by thunder shirts,

However the best solution was getting the first greyhound, first storm after Emmy arrived the lab was to embarrassed by the fact that the new dog wasn't scared to act scared. Now thunder doesn't bother her anymore.

Something for the "taste of the wild" patrons (made by diamond).

Tractor Supply has a new private label food "4Health". It too is made by Diamaond and is getting great reviews on the various dog food ratings websites. They have about six flavors and we landed on the Salmon and Potato, which seems to be the best of the bunch.

We switched our three mutts over to it about six weeks ago and they (and their coats) are loving it.

It's about 65% the cost of "taste of the wild". That's a decent amount of avgas considering the amount of food my 235 pounds of mutts go through a month.
