His name is Dino, named by his original owners.

History, original owners took him to the dog drop with a note that they were gone 10+ hours a day and he was kenneled and it wasn't fair to the dog.

Pup wasn't socialized too well, so the shelter ran him through a foster home where he learned basic discipline (sit for a treat or leash, worked on jumping up, and worked on him being a little too mouthy and taking treats gently).

Once they were sure he was okay with mouth and jumping, they took him back to the shelter. We saw him last night but he wasn't cleared for adoption until today. Saw him on the website and headed over to meet him and one other dog.

They had him listed as a Lab / Australian Cattle Dog mix. As soon as the handler/counselor saw him she said, "He's not what we have him listed as, he's too big." We agreed. We haven't figured out quite what he is yet. Sure looks like he's a Pyrenees mix to me. He stands with his head as high as my waist and I'm 5' 11".

Other notes in his file were that he was good with people and other large dogs, no info on small animals yet, but so far he's been fine. They also had a note that he had a gait problem with his right rear leg, and they had put a standard disclaimer on it that it could be neurological. Reality is, neither is nor the shelter counselor could spot it, but what we do see is a 1 year old still growing into his legs. The usual slightly awkward use of limbs, and stumbles as he thought he wanted to go two directions at once, like all young tall, big breeds. Wasn't tied to a particular leg at all.

Trainer mentioned that he honestly could be experiencing growing pains once in a while at the rate he's growing.

And so, without further adieu, world, meet Dino. Dino, world.

(Yes, that makes me Fred Flinstone, peanut gallery. Ha.)

Funniest story already... Like all pound pups he seemed to innately know he was getting a second chance. We had him home for an hour or so and then needed to run to PetSmart to get various dog stuff. We thought he would be all up for CSR ride number two, but as soon as we were out the back door he made a beeline for the house and dropped all fours down and all 67 lbs and held on to the porch with his nose pointed at the house.

He knew a good thing when he saw it and wasn't going to leave and go anywhere! We coaxed him into the truck and then to PetSmart and he had a fun time meeting some other dogs and checking out the aisles with us. It may take him a while to not associate car rides with "going back to the shelter" since he was dumped by first owners there and then had to go back there after foster care.

He's wolfed down about three cups of his same dry food he was eating at the pound (Science Diet) and a couple of treats and about a gallon of water this evening. When checking to see if he needed to go out, he was having none of it. He clung to that soft warm new bed like he would never leave it.

We have two beds for him so he has a place to sleep in our bedroom, and he wasn't going to come upstairs at first either. I had to take the living room bed with me and tell him it was okay to come upstairs with us. He did and now he is having doggy dreams (and lightly barking in his sleep with paws twitching) at the foot of the bed. So we will deploy bed number two back into the living room tomorrow morning and he will figure out there's two places to sleep.

He's a big baby. Loves belly rubs (see photos above) and that bed.

No food defense issues, no other bad behavior and as usual, he's catching on quick that jumping up will be ignored. He's met the neighbor's dogs at the fenceline and he's not a barker. We've heard a total of four barks out of him, and those were frustration at us for not leaving the little office at the shelter soon enough for his tastes, and same thing when he got tired of waiting on us in PetSmart. Only a whine or two at the neighbor dogs, and a couple of soft whines when he was happy and getting a bunch of pets.

The day started out at the memorial service of a family friend. She was highly patriotic and the memorial and reception including guest clothing theme, was red, white, and blue.

Afterward we picked up this boy and when picking out a new collar for him at the shelter, the perfect one was there... he's sporting a U.S. Flag motif collar that spells out U.S.A. repeatedly around his collar in honor of our friend, Joan. RIP Joan.

Goodnight, Dino.

Well, maybe he won't argue with you.

Lynn may have nailed at least one of the breeds in the mix. His size and colorization are German Shorthaired Pointer. He's fuzzier and way more mellow, so I suspect another Giant breed like Pyrenees or Great Dane. Or just a big Lab.

We will probably get the DNA test just to see what it says.

Well, maybe he won't argue with you.

Like Karen? Heh heh. (Actually we rarely argue... Unless its over how to warn me more than one block in advance if she's handling navigation chores in the Yukon. They're surprisingly maneuverable, but I prefer not to have to use it to dart across three lanes if I can help it. Haha.)

Welcome back to the fray, Nate. Dino may not know it yet but he just hit the doggie lottery!

Good looking dog. I love big dogs.

I'd say a healthy dose of Blue Healer in him and maybe some Lab. Very good looking dog. Dino looks happy and yet he has so much more to see and do in his new world. So nice of you to adopt.

Good luck!!

Congrats on your new dog. I love big dogs too. Cute guy.

How wonderful! It will be good to see how he develops as he is more secure with you.

Nice looking' pup, Nate. Congrats to you and Karen.

Dogs are good people!

Congrats Nate - FWIW - Science Diet is absolute crap. They're good at marketing and convincing vets to sell it but the food is horrible, IMO.

Bentley had lots of problems with gas, his coat, and just smelling in general after I first got him. You could give him as many baths as you wanted and it made no difference. If he brushed up against a wall it'd leave a black streak.

It took some messing around with to figure out the best food - at least for him - it is this:
http://www.petco.com/product/100593/Solid-Gold-Barking-at-the-Moon-Grain-Free-Adult-Dog-Food.aspx

No wheat
No soybeans
No corn
No grains
No animal fat added
No by-products
No sugar added
No preservatives added
No salt added
No sunflower oil

I don't know if it was the grains or gluten or what that caused him so many problems. But on this stuff his coat is perfect, he never smells, and he never ever has gas. It's not the cheapest but totally worth it. Just runs about $70/mo to feed him.

Heck, if Celia reads that, she might make me start eating it!

Me thinks German short hair English Pointer mix. wishing you many years of happy doggie. Bliss.

That looks like one happy family!

Purebread mutt, the best kind of dog around. For me there is nothing like having a dog in the house. The previous owners loss will be your gain, and good for them they took the dog someplace that cares more about placing them than disposing of them. Congrats.

What a great happy story. May I show off the newest member of my family? He was a giveaway on Craigslist.

How could anyone give away a ball of love like that...

He's incurably playful and energetic; the previous owner had an old Sheltie who couldn't handle all the rough play. My 12-year-old Lab has a problem with it, so I understand. I've been trying to take the brunt of his enthusiasm, but .....

Here's what I mean.

Cool on the other new pup!

We had a good first day, which started at 05:30 wanting to go outside. Ha. Early riser. Grrrrrreat.... Haha.

He has a bit of separation anxiety. We went to a quick breakfast with him in the truck and some (idiot) concerned citizen called the Sheriff about a "dog in distress". He wasn't. It was in the 60s here today and he'd had half a gallon of water before our 1/2 hour trip on purpose to see how he did. Sigh.

Deputy was nice about it but the jerks that actually neglect their dogs and the soccer moms who call cops instead of just asking at the restaurant front desk if anyone has a dog at a breakfast place, sure have ruined things for normal folk. Damned lowest common denominator.

(I swear to God I need to move to the country to get away from all the idiots.)

Anyway that was adventure #1 today. Apparently he gets vocal when left behind. He likes being with his people and its the only time he barks, or a rare bark when he wants to scold us for ignoring something he thinks is important.

So back home and I worked on chipping our iceberg out of the street out front. Been warm enough to break most of it up where the tree shades the street. Karen brought him out front on the long leash. He met some neighbors and dogs and was well mannered with all. (I also got cornered by a Girl Scout. Oh crud! Ha.)

Backyard I grabbed some training treats and had his 100% attention. Worked on sit, stay, down, and come. He's still learning to look at me and not the treat pocket. That took some repetition but it will happen. He did well but didn't overdo it or he will just bore with it.

We have the crate set up, but considering his history (10+ hours a day in a crate) he's not too interested in going in it.

I climbed in there and had him follow me as far in as he could and made it a "good place", he isn't quite ready yet. If he can behave in the house or part of the house, it'd be better. He did use it as an opportunity to "get me" since he knew I couldn't fend off licks or be too forceful about them since I don't want scolding associated with the crate... I got a bath. Ha.

Final test in prep for tomorrow when we have to go to work... We ran over to Walmart and Starbucks real quick to see how he did in the house. Looked like he was a little freaked but not bad. He chewed on a toy (good, he knows what items are his) and looks like he jumped up a bit near the front door and knocked a photo off the wall, but it looked like just a reaction to us going out the front door. No biggie. He also was barking a bit when we got back.

May pick up a couple of video cameras and set them up for remote viewing to see if his anxiety is super high. Pound pups often do so we will work through it.

Work is only 4 miles away so I will be making lunch visits home and seeing how he's doing. And every other week I usually can work at home four of five days.

So... On with the adventure. I think he will learn pretty quick we are always coming home. Keep doing small trips out and back. Acclimatize him to it. He will learn to chill.

He needs an initial vet visit so will have to schedule that this week or early next. We loved our vet we used for Eb but she's a 45 minute drive on a good day. We never switched when we moved across town, so it's time to hunt down the local ones and get references.

Peanut butter + Kong = Kept him pretty busy for a while. :)

After treeing some squirrels. What next?? Got any more of those?? Ha.

I can see it now.................. A new chew toy..... " NATE IN A CRATE"

You don't know how much this thread makes me miss my ball of fur at home :). College is great and all...but it does lack dogs. You should see the commotion any time someone brings a dog to campus. Actually, that reminds me...around exam time each semester, they bring in therapy puppies you can play with. I'll have to do that this semester.

That's what we feed both of our pups. Expensive but worth it....IMO.

Congrats Nate!! Looks like a fine dog. I remember when we got our latest one two years ago. It's a great feeling rescuing a pet. Our two go nuts for the PB+Kong trick. They will follow you around like there's no tomorrow until you put it down.

I'd like to rescue a dog but as of right now i'm up to my ears in dogs. I have an energetic 3.5 year old lab and now we have a Great Dane puppy in the house. I call them Thing 1 and Thing 2

There's other ways. We just got 3 mixed pups out of Nebraska this weekend to Mountain Rescue here in Colorado. All are happy (they were happy in foster, but needed to get to real homes) and going to really good homes.

I tell my dogs all the time, they won the doggie lottery! One of my dad's friends used to joke, "When I die, I want to come back as a Bleakley dog!" I guess we aren't known to abuse them. :D We have a registered Golden Retriever and a lab mix, both like to fly and will go anywhere in the car, even the vet, they just want to ride! :D Put up some pictures of his first flight! ;)

Well, Pilgrim, if it's pictures ya be wantin' ....

Thanks for the tip. He's having some uh, bowel issues apparently today. He hasn't seen the Vet yet so could be excitement, a couple too many treats besides his usual diet, or something else. We'll see.

But yeah, we had some stuff that we fed Eb that agreed with her and it wasn't crappy Science Diet. Just need to see what's up with the current problem and switch him over slowly.

He um, "Poops like a horse" as Karen said today. Ha. Big dog, big poop...

That's great!!
I had gotten a 7 month old puppy from the pound back in 1997 and I had him up until a few weeks ago...he lived to be 16! Then of course the inevitable happened. But then this past Friday I got a new rescue dog. She's probably 3 years old.

Congrats! Nothing like having a dog in the house!

How could anyone give away a ball of love like that...

They probably just realized they couldn't handle him, even though they wanted to. It's actually a good thing to do for the dog.
The ones I don't get are the ones who keep a dog they can't take care of properly, and just neglect it.

Good luck to Dino and his new family!! :) He looks like what I would just call a "coon hound"... but who cares? Shelter mutts rule!!

Hey, Nate,

Finally...just this morning...I had a chance to read this thread to our three rescue mutts and show them the photos of Dino.

They were impressed and asked that I send you their thoughts.

LOL Tim! Thanks.

Stool sample came back positive for Giardia so we're starting antibiotics and probiotics. Poor dude. We'll get him all patched up... the pound hinted he should be tested, they must have a run of it going on and it's hard to break the cycle in a crowded pound environment.

They technically will pay for any medical issues within the first 15 days, but we'll just handle it... making the pound pay for it just means less money they have to take care of other dogs.

How noble of you to pay for it on your own! Looks like you got a real keeper there, Nate!

I like mutts, man. Nothing like a good, old fashioned dog! My little bud, Doug, came from the pound. He can be a handful, but he's a smart fella and a real lover. He's a bit anxious when we leave. I see you use the peanut butter in the Kong trick. It always works for me.
