I figured I'd throw this out there. I just got my PPL last weekend (April 28th) it took alot of work and determinitation and patience (from me and my CFI) if you feel like giving up but want a kick in the butt to get done let me know. I have more hours then *most* had when they got their PPL but hey it's just a number. I've had more things happen during the training then most have happen in their flying career. I think I've helped some other people on this board and want to encourage you. Basically what I'd say is follow your dream of flying, remind yourself why you started this journey into flight!
 
As a PPL student, I thank you for your words of encouragement.
Congratulations on acheiving your ambition to be a pilot, and I wish you many years of safe and happy flying.

On that she had more things happen than most have happen in their flying career.

I'm guessing she considers private pilots too- many don't fly too many hours compared to the pros.

Congrats! If it was easy, it wouldn't be worth doing.

Hoping to have my ticket with a few months.

I guess we're not going to get an answer to the basis of the claim. Maybe it was just a thoughtless statement. Maybe you believe it. I guess nobody will ever know...

I understand you had issues. But what you said was "I've had more things happen during the training then most have happen in their flying career".

Do you really think that's a true statement?

I know what you meant. And I commend you on you willingness to help others who may be going through a tough patch. I have read most of your posts in regards to your training struggles and I believe you can be a valuable resource for others. I know the determination you showed during your training will help you block out any detractors. Keep up the good work!

OMG Sara! how come we didn't hear anything about this? congratulations! it's been a long path for you, but I'm so happy to hear you made it... I knew you would!

I shared your question when I read the OPs post, but then realized that from her perspective as a novice her experiences were daunting and her pride in overcoming them fully justified. I for one didn't take your comment as anything more than curiosity at understanding her criteria. I doubt she has ever had a lightning strike and engine fire 900 miles from land, or been treated to a chip detector light coming on while trying to hold a hover next to a cliff in gusty winds, but we should allow her a little hyperbole. She fought her way through and succeeded.
 
Way to go Sara. It is nice to see someone like you encouraging someone else that you don't even know. It can be difficult to learn to fly, and is certainly expensive, but the rewards are (in my mind) well worth it. Very few humans in this world get to experience the things us pilots do. Wow.

I think to some, your question seemed kind of snarky...of course that is the problem with posting on the interwebz...intent can sometimes be hard to figure out.
 
My guess is that if a person had one declared emergency then they "had more things happen ... then most have happen in their flying career". I think that there are pilots here that have much more experience than the norm and some are offended by her claim but they are forgetting she said "most" and they are not "most". So I do not see all that much wrong with her statement; it may be a bit of poetic license but I know it came from a place of good intention.

Geeze you guys take things serious. Good for you Sara, I remember some of your setbacks and certain members telling you to get out of the game. Glad you made it.
 
Geez you guys are harsh. Back up a little and knock the chips off your own shoulders before trying to kock them off others.
 
Wow, as a newcomer to this board, I am amazed that a little hyperbole turned into such a fuss, detracting from the OP. I guess that goes to the second part of the quote in my sig.

I though Sara's starting this thread was altruistic, and didn't need to prick anyone's ego. I do so hate it when my own inflated ego gets in the way, and don't like to see it happen to others.
 
The posting did come from a point of wanting to help others. Struggles come in during training and wanted to let students know there is a good end to all the work. I wish when I was training there was a mentor I could turn to.

I don't know why you've become so irked with me. This thread isn't about me and I'm not trying to make it so. She made a statement and I asked for clarification. Is this forum for everyone's comments except mine?

I seem to remember a time when I had your support. Not so much anymore...

Hello, Sara.
Thanks for this encouraging post. I haven't been following your adventure, but I know the great challenges of becoming a pilot.

So many of us struggled through the discouragement and just plain frustration of getting there. It is good when you and others who have made it turn back and reach out a hand of encouragement to others who are continuing the struggle and who may need that extra bit of help.

I had Hubby to keep me going. He believed in me and we worked together. Not long ago, he told me that he was tempted to quit, but he kept going because I did. And I kept going because he did. That's what you are doing.

Anyway, if students have made it through to this point in the thread, my word to you is to keep with it. Sara made it. I made it. Hubby made it. And today, we are all reaching back and saying you can make it, too.
 
I helped one person so far. I feel good about that accomplishment.

Me too, though a lot of internet people were helpful. No in person mentor however.

I recently met with a student (not sure if he is on POA, met him at an EAA meeting). I gave him many of my materials, some other items, and met at an FBO who let me use their conference room to "guide" him through his next steps. Though he barely listened to me, he kept in touch, and I even took him for a flight. Every time he would call or text or email I would smile and think "I told you so." It was him going through something I'd briefed him on in those four hours at the FBO when he started his first lessons. Saw him the other day, at a meeting, he is doing well. Have mentored / coached / help roughly 2-10 before / after him. It is the best thing I've ever done and I will continue to do it whenever possible.
