Thoughts on flying with Lead Acid Battery (Portable Jump Start)

My current thinking is not to do this, but I’m curious what everyone thinks about it and if there are any regs. I’ve got a portable jump starter that has a 12V 17Ah lead acid battery.

I was thinking it would be nice to have this and an inverter at OSH for a few of my electronics that need AC power. Mostly camera battery charger and laptop. (For offloading Photos).
 
I run a solar panel whenever I am at OSH to charge a spare power pack for cell phones and such. There's 110v plug ins at the charge stations and I usually just do a little work in my lawn chair with the laptop plugged in.

I wouldn't be hauling any lead acid batteries inside my plane unless they were contained in a battery box that would ensure they cannot leak if they spill.
 
Ok. I just looked and found a usb charger for my camera batteries which I’m excited about. I’ve already got a small solar panel and 2 small power packs so I should be good there.

I’ll plan on hitting up one of the charge stations if I need it but I’m guessing the laptop battery may even last all week if I’m just turning it on to transfer photos.
 
Osh has charging stations as well, just head to the roaring Honda generators on the walkways between the booths. Of course, you are tied to the station for a while, but in a pinch.
I have a 1600mah Crave TravelPro which can fully charge an ipad and an iphone before it needs recharging. Top-ups consume considerably less. I can carry it in a pocket. In view of its age, I bet you could now find something even smaller with better capacity.

Part 91, who cares.??

As GRG55 said, put it in a leak free battery container. Or just get a gel cell battery.

I like the solar idea better.

Yeah, plenty of other brands as well. The lithium jump packs are amazing. Light and strong to jump start your plane if you left the master on. I used it in the winter after I flossed my engine and the battery was getting weak from the repeated starts cranking over during the failed starts. I jumped it and let it run and warm up for 5 minutes, then shut down, unhooked the pack and started back up with a warm engine and charged battery.

Plus mine has a 12v cig lighter output for accessories and USB ports. I keep one in each car and already used it to start my wife’s car at the grocery store when she waited in the lot with her lights and radio on.
 
Except for everyone's concern for the super-explody Lithium battery pack, this is my test rig for Solar Operations. I have a bigger battery now, and yes the idea is to take it on the plane and work very very remotely from time to time. The panel does a fine job of keeping things running without draining the battery in full sun.

Is that a goal zero Sherpa 50 you were charging?

Those look nice although the nomad panels seems a bit pricy. Your custom solution looks pretty good. Do you have any details on the solar panels you have there?

That's a Sherpa 100. I think it's the official Goal Zero MC4 cable, adapted to Power Pole for the meter(since the Sherpa has limited indications) and then back to MC4 for the panel. Although a Goal Zero Power Pole adapter would have probably been fine.

I've since gotten a Nomad 28 for the Sherpa when I want to be portable and a Suaoki 'G500' for when I want all the power.

That particular panel is a MOOHOO(from Amazon) 100W folding and slightly bendable panel. I seem to recall it does 70W or so without issue, but I'm not home to check it, it's an MC4 output with no on-board charge controller. Obviously way cheaper per watt than the Goal Zero panels.

So, I finally got home and pulled the panel out and put it out in the Oregon 'Sun' and it's doing 76W into the Suaoki G500, I've aimed it slightly... I consider that a pretty good number for the price.
