Reagan proclaimed it? Can you spell irony boys and girls….

you might want to learn what "irony" means.
Why is it that a tower or approach channel can be quiet for a while, and only when I need to collect the ATIS will it start getting busy?

for the same reasons that ATC will contact you just as you need to level off, or start a climb/descent, or turn to a new heading.

And……. If you’re flying in 1234W they’ll also start talking to 2134W, and the transmissions will have more distortions, and someone will step on the transmission, and …..

I want to know how the controller knows when I take a bite of my sandwich. :)
That happened to me a month ago (kind of)! Chicago approach busy as hell told me to standby when picking up flight following and a minute later I thought I was safe to take a quick swig of water.

Of course that's right when they radioed me back for position and altitude, so I tried to gulp down my water, went down the wrong pipe, and I started responding I began hacking up a lung sounding like I'm going to die. I was waiting for them to call back and ask if I was having a medical emergency lol.

the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect..

That fits the way I see it

How does one sign up other drivers for that seminar? Almost every time I drive anywhere, I find drivers that should receive that teaching.
By racing up next to them and threatening them with their life if they don't.

I should probably sign myself up.

Hitting close to home as I'm now flying 4123W. Had to do a double take.

And every time I work alone and have to walk across the room to cut a new ATIS, someone calls for radio check, clearances etc. Also why is it that the only two helicopters in my airspace have to be right next to each other? I’ve determined that helicopters are magnetic. Why do controllers who have long weekends show up Monday and forget everything they were taught then wonder why the watch supervisor is grumpy?

I suppose that fits if you assume that one cannot possibly support the ATC system if they fire someone for breaking the law.

I’m betting a C-130 called while you were typing this. :)

On the subject of C-130s, don’t they go to same school that teaches how to file a flight plan? They always want something different than THEY filed and expect me to fix it.

I hate C-130s - have I mentioned that before?

I mean, they’re high wings

That's to be expected, C-130s are just adolescent aircraft.

Are they better behaved when they're fully grown C-5 Galaxies?

C-130s? I remember back in the day when we were happy to go from TAC to MAC, only to find out were just the sesame seeds on the buns of big mac.

Never had an issue with C-5s. Clear radios, clearances etc and good pilots. As a passenger on one from AZ to England, it was fairly pleasant. I got the good seats in the middle near the wing. I heard you roasted up front and froze in the back. Of course that’s reversed because everyone sits backwards

I hated them right up to the point I was living in tent city at Aviano and they were the quietest plane in a KEZ package launch. I could sleep through them, but the Prowlers were usually next in line and they were the slowest and loudest jets to grace the flightline; no sleeping through their launch. Then the Vipers and CF-18s. After an hour+ of a package launching, I could sleep again for about 3-4 hours before going back on scope.

Those were the days I learned to love the Herc.

Came across a funny aircraft listing on TAP. Asking $125k for a crusty, dusty Arrow.

"Fresh annual! always hangared!"

Last flight...

Probs wasn't lying about it always being hangared. My guess is it didn't see anything but the hangar!

Added one more item to "things you have to do that no one mentions"....

You know those nose inserts on your canula oxygen system? You do have to clean them every now and then, or else one fine day when pulling it out of the bag and looking at it before sticking it in your nose......

OK, plodding along at 55ish knots across the ground, 1800ish feet, about 10 or 12 south of DTW, watching DAL1243 (the actual number) climb out on a more or less intersecting course, and I thought of a couple questions for our highly qualified, well paid, above average, exceptionally attractive airline pilots...

DAL - why don't they use the name of the airline for the call sign?
edit: DAL Delta Air Line. Moron.

What, if anything, would ATC be telling you about me if you were up front crossing over me by about 2-3000 feet? (I'm squawking 1200, ADSB out. I doubt that you could spot me way down near the ground under the class B)

Summer in Atlanta is here. Working outside is similar to working at Chernobol. I can get only a 20-30 minute exposure to the radiation/heat before coming inside, drink water, cool off, put on an un sweat soaked T shirt, and head out again. Getting older isn't helping, but it is preferable than not getting older LOL.

You have way more heat than we do here, but it's still been hot here. Mid 90's and high humidity for days at a time. I've tried the wicking t-shirts for outside work, and maybe they're cooler but to me they feel like I'm wearing a trash bag with a bunch of holes in it when it's in the 90's and humid. I'm much more comfortable in a 100% cotton t-shirt, even when it gets soaked. Maybe I'm an outlier with that.

In my younger days I’d take the motorcycle for a track day in summer. Neat trick was to soak a T shirt in ice water, put it on and gear up right before your 20 minute session. Come back in, get the leather jacket and back protector off and pour ice water on your head. Then rest up, rinse and repeat.

Back when I was selling race fuel and driving the fuel truck, I would put ice and water in a cooler along with 2 towels. When it would get hot, I would put one towel over my shoulders to cool off. When that towel quit cooling I would switch towels.

Speaking of humidity, we are really sweltering here in New Mexico. The humidity right now is all the way up to 5% with the temp at 92 degrees. It is real comfortable when in the shade with the breeze showing 17mph right now. But in the direct sunlight the sun goes straight through me.

And to add to the fun, my house does not have air conditioning. We have a window unit in the master bedroom, but the rest of the house is cooled by the swamp cooler.

I'm annoyed a bit that you guys have 5% humidity. Because I've lost track of the number of times I've tried to explain, usually unsuccessfully, that spraying water in the air when it's 85% humidity doesn't make it any cooler at all.

Swamp cooler?? An ice chest with a fan?
Sorta.

Swamp cooler is the common name for the evaporator cooler.

Basically a big box with a squirrel fan with pads that are constantly soaked with water. Usually mounted on the roof.

Correct. Monsoon season is rapidly approaching. With the rain comes humidity and then the swamp cooler is not as effective.

Never knew about it. Then again, I’ve never lived where the humidity didn’t match or exceed the temperature.

Mostly for entertainment, last weekend I requested a quote through Angi (formerly Angie's List) for someone to come and fix my noisy furnace blower and repair a few damaged ducts in my house. There were two options right away. First, a virtual contractor who would walk me through the repairs by videoconference. I guess that's for someone who has lots of spare time and would rather pay someone to tell him how to do the job than watch YouTube ads. Second, a contractor 180 miles away whose profile says they don't travel here and whose first review begins with "if I could give them zero stars, I would." A third one, about 150 miles away, apparently got matched to me, texted that they are booked out two months, asked if the problem is indoor or outdoor (because a lot of people in northern climates evidently keep their furnaces and ductwork outdoors), and has been silent since then.

If anyone knows where to buy furnace blower parts, let me know. I don't have that much time on my hands and generally my billable time makes it hard to justify doing a project I won't enjoy for free, but the only real holdup from doing it myself at this point is that I can't figure out where to buy the dang parts.

I went for a ride earlier this morning. Upon launching OAT was 82ºF, humidity was 92%. Didn't take long for my closed canopy, low wing, to become an EZ bake oven. Still it was a great ride with a bit of take-off and landing practice to end with. Life is good ...

Didn’t Jim K post about working on his AC/Furnace?

I replaced ours last winter and bought it on Ebay. Make sure you get a factory authorized replacement. I first bought a cheap one locally, but it did not move enough air, and the furnace kept overheating. It was cold and our old had died and we need one fast. The one from Ebay works great and I kept the cheap one as a backup.

I searched my email to try to figure out where I got my parts from, but it appears I deleted the emails. It wasn't anybody I used before....I just searched for the part numbers I needed and ordered them from the cheapest vendor who claimed to have them in stock. I -think- it was SupplyHouse.com.

I've learned why the animals love north facing slopes out there. Problem is if you're trying to glass them moving on the north side, you have to be on the south side.
