Guy on my MeWe aviation group says one of his 172's renters wrote up the airplane for not having an 8 on the transponder. Seriously.

Renter says ATC gave him a squawk containing an 8. Yeah, no. But now I'm seriously baffled: if renter was given an invalid code, shouldn't he have clarified that with ATC in the air? And if he read back the code that he thought he was given, shouldn't ATC have corrected him?

I've asked the owner for more info, maybe the LiveATC feed. In the meantime, as another group member said, sounds like it's time for renter to have a flight review.
 
I had clearance delivery try to give me an impossible squawk one day. He wasn’t amused when I called him on it.
 
It’s impossible for the computer to assign an 8 so the renter was either mistaken in what they heard or they were joking. Yes, if indeed the controller heard a misread, they’re required to correct it. That’s if they heard it though.
 
He needs to go out and get a bucket of prop wash next.
 
Was that before or after departing runway 37?

Apparently it worked.
 
Muffler bearing grease. And the yellow & black striped paint around the maintenance shed is worn, pick up a gallon of that too.
 
When Chuck Norris is done hand-propping his 747, he squawks 8. Not 8888. Just 8.

Of course, this brings up the classic number base joke: Why do mathematicians confuse Christmas and Halloween? Because 25 Dec = 31 Oct.

Where did the photo came from, and where was it taken, or is it PhotoShopped? I ask, because there is a restaurant in my books named in the the manner of the 19th Hole on a golf course--"Runway 37 Bar and Grill."

Not sure, seen that photo a lot. I believe it was indeed real its been shared through my official FAA airport sources for years among many other incorrect signs. I believe it was a typo from the sign shop.

Doesn’t seem like a typo. More like someone knew that the opposite ends of runways were 180 degree opposed but didn’t understand the only 360 degrees in a circle thing. 17/35>>18/36>>19/oops

The sign reminds me of a favorite NJ embarrassing event from 1996. Trenton State College was changing its' name, allegedly in an effort to help recruiting efforts, by getting 'Trenton' out of the name. On the big day of the cutover, students, faculty, alumni (mostly unhappy about the change), and press were gathered for the unveiling of the new signage at the entrance to the school. With great fanfare, the tarps came down to reveal two huge: "The College of New Jeresey" signs.

It was hysterical. I saved a photo from the local paper, but can't seem to find it now.

Have to realize the persons working in these shops only do what the shop order tells them, they have no knowledge of aviation usually. Its not uncommon for signs to be mis-manufactured with what we would consider glaring errors. One of the reasons airports must verify new sign panels are indeed correct.

Yeah. I wasn’t saying it was necessarily the sign shop dudes. Just that someone misapplied the 180 degree thang, probably before it got to the sign shop. And that it got to the point it actually got installed is another story. Wonder how long it stayed there.

Trenton Makes, The World Takes.

I spent a few years as a Rutgers "The State University of New Jersey" administrator. From time to time that would get chopped off and I'd get correspondence addressed to "Rutgers, The State."

You'd be amazed at the ways things get done incorrectly. The FAA provides airports with powerpoints full of them for training purposes.

These Powerpoints are sometimes formatted as quizzes for us. Can you figure out what is wrong with the sign, and how to fix it? The inspectors do find some doozies sometimes.
 
Some other fine examples...

When the inspector finds a good one, they sometimes take a photo with it.

Red background indicates a Runway Hold Position sign. There is no such thing as a Taxiway Hold Position sign.
