Since we've been talking handheld lately I thought I'd jump in with my wish list.

Note: I'm old, but I'm not a luddite. I've had a computer since 1976 and recently retired from software development.

Here is my usecase:

I am on the ramp at Bergstrom. Before I power up the airplane I want to turn on my handheld (powered by alkaline batteries), turn the thumbwheels to 124.4, and listen to the ATIS.

Then I want to turn the thumbwheels to 125.5 and get my clearance.

I don't want scanning, I don't want to program the radio, I don't want a bunch of multifunction buttons and knobs.

I want on/off, volume/squelch, set frequency.

That looks like an old mode 2/3 transponder or something. No thumb wheels but my Sportys SP200 works like that. Recently just got rid of the crappy NICAD for AAs. Works great.

Simplest one that you can get a headset adapter and Alkaline battery sled for...both are separate accessories. I do not think there are any Airbands that come stock using AA but a few models have sleds like the A-14 that you can replace with the rechargeable battery.

Used to be an old handheld that had little thumbwheels to set the frequency. Can't say I've seen anything like it recently. Frankly, haven't seen any panel mounts that work that way recently.
 
Thanks Shawn, the A-14 looks like what I want. The FAQ says you can just type in a frequency without programming, and the AA pack is available.

They sure are proud of the accessories!

Check what Battery is in it.
Lithium Ion, Best charge it up long lasting charge.
NiCad, Good charge it up limited time before you have to charge it up again.
Nickel-metal hydride, Poor better keep it on the charger till you need it does not keep charge long.
