I got a job offer in south GA. The pay increase is about 10% for me over what I make now and the offer is optioned based on performance for 6% each year for the first three. I have no doubt I can make those benchmarks. So in three years I could be 28% over what I make now.

Job is located near the Port of Brunswick. Just south of it really, but that looks like the major landmark. I've visited the area quite a bit ands it's doable for me. But I don't know about living in the area. I've stayed on Jeckle island, S Simons island and as far south as Amilia Island on previous visits.

Was thinking Kingsland might be a good bedroom community. School quality is gonna be a huge deal for us. Has to be better than we are at now to convince the CFO to approve the move.

I don't want to spend more than $210k on a house. I know that's cheap, but we have had the $500k houses and I'd like to keep it simple, low key and fly a lot more. Big house is fine, but I hate trying to keep up with it.

I'd like to be somewhere between, say, Darian and the Florida line. That's about 60 miles or so for a frame of reference. Right now I drive 41 miles each way, so I'm no stranger to a commute.

What do you guys think?
 
I really enjoyed living just off the FL line, the people down there are great once they get to know you, only draw back would be the humidity and the gnats and they don't like seaplanes, just be sure you get a house with a good high sear AC and also make sure you have ceiling fans.

200k would probably get you a decent setup, this isn't NYC or CA where you pay a lot for a little.
 
Kingsland is actually a nice area. Newer homes and has a Florida vibe to it. Of course you could try something just south of the border as well. No state income tax. Not too far though. Grew up in JAX and never want to go back there.

Fernandina beach is nice. We've got a base in Yulee. Never been there but everyone likes the area. Might be my retirement base when the time comes.
 
200k would buy a nice 3 bedroom/2 bath house in Brunswick. Housing costs on the islands (St Simons & Jekyll) is much, much higher.

Off topic, but I'm definitely using this the next time I have an opportunity in conversation, I'm literally laughing out loud at calling the wife the CFO.

I think it is south of the gnat line. Never remember getting eaten up by gnats in JAX but Savannah to Beaufort is sand gnat city.

Hot, humid and flat though. I prefer mountains.
 
Oh the stench from the mill just south of bruswick on a hot summer day is nauseating. Spent 6 months in Brunswick. Nothing special at all. Only civilization is Savannah an hour north or Jacksonville an hour south. The biggest stimulation to the economy is the federal law enforcement training center.
 
Oh, man, forgot about the paper mills.
And snakes, lotta snakes.
 
I live in central GA and I'm not too familiar with Brunswick. 200k gets a decent house here. Probably a 2000ish sq ft newer house. You will be south of the gnat line. They are aggravating here but get worse going south. I live in Houston county which has decent schools but overall Georgia's school system is lacking. Keep in mind I don't know much about that particular are.
 
You may already know about the Navy nuclear sub base at Kings Bay so I would think the school system in that area would be good. Also at Brunswick airport is a Gulfstream aircraft facility, think they outfit the Gulfstreams for their clients. Also on the west side is an overhaul company, think they did some work on Trump's 757 there. I only mention these last two as a ways to make connections for future opportunities (ie JOB). Ya never know. Hot and humid but it's the south, mild winters. Commercial air service to ATL on my old airline from Glenco/Brunswick, and JAX airport just north of Jacksonville for other commercial flights.

Housing should be fairly cheap outside of the popular beach areas (Jekyll, St Simons and Amelia). As mentioned the school systems in rural Georgia can be rather lacking, check carefully. There are online honors/AP courses, but some of the HS counselors don't seem to mention that to the students. :confused:

Not too far away there is some inexpensive 100LL.

And hurricanes give pretty good warning that they're in the area, even if they are sometimes directionally challenged! Fly out before it gets too bad, your insurance will often cover the trip away.
 
Brunswick ain't "South Georgia", it's "Coastal Georgia". I wouldn't have a problem moving to Coastal Georgia. Even if you didn't land in a good school district, there is enough money down there you'd be able to find a good private school.

Unless the job really sucks, what's the problem? If I could make 28% over what I am now you better believe I'd be considering a move seriously.

210K is NOT cheap. I've seen 50K houses here in FL, now THAT'S cheap.

So I got the official email yesterday...congrats... Blah, blah, blah, you are a valuable asset, blah, blah blah, .......we need your decision as we had many excellent candidates.

We are gonna do it. Once I send the Email, HR will call with "when can you be there? Now is good"

Gotta figure out where to live now.
 
I have friends that lived on St. Simon's Island, and now live nearby on the mainland. Have visited them many times.

My summary? "Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there".

Muggy, swampy, buggy, sulfer-y water, not my cup of tea.

Best part about it? Only 6 hours or so drive - and a much shorter flight - to the foothills of the Appalachians - our little slice of heaven!

Oh...my...I forgot about the water. You're right, worst tasting water I've ever had.

I know about a dozen people on St. Simons. About half of them say "I NEVER go across the bridge." (Meaning the causeway). And they're not joking (much).

They love their little alternate reality microcosm.

My sister works in S Ga (Folkston) but lives in N Fl (Callahan). Her taxes are better that way.
 
I could entertain myself in that area, get a deep-V powerboat or a sailboat and enjoy!
 
St Marys, GA is ok place and $200k might get you a nice house with acreage. They have a decent airport. West of Brunswick is Nahunta. You might want to look there too if you want rural seclusion. $200k would go a long way. They have an airport, too.

Go over to Florida to Fernandina Bch which is nice. They have no income tax and a nice airport.

Note: Flying West from this area avoid the large Okee swamp. It is full of large gators and every poisonous creature in North America. If you go down in it, you might not be found for years,,,if at all.

I lived in Savannah twice. Once was when I was stationed at Hunter in the Army and the second time when I worked for Gulfstream. Yeah, it can get a bit warm at times but I liked it there. Happier in NC though.
 
I believe that if you live in FL but work in GA, GA will tax you on all 'GA source' income. So unless you have substantial non-work income (e.g. A trust fund ;) ) living across the border won't make a big difference in your state tax liability. Some states have reciprocity agreements, but those are usually states that both collect a income tax. The states that neighbor a no-tax state have no interest in doing so.

North GA is very pretty. One nice thing about central and south GA is no CFIT unless you're flying low enough to hit a tree.
