Superbowl Thread

Sheesh.....I thought it was a Monte Carlo....
"GNX" is the name of Kendrick Lamar's latest album, apparently an homage to his dad's car.

I find it interesting that the complaining about the music seems to have extended to America the Beautiful and the national anthem.

I thought they were both great:

I liked the trombone shorty version of AtB but was not a fan of the NA. Because that’s my opinion.

Performing the National Anthem at an event like this is difficult on several levels. It's a challenging song to sing well technically. It's also well neigh impossible to make your performance of it "distinctive" in any positive way. The best most can hope for is do solid justice to the piece and get off the stage. The impact is in the moment: everyone in attendance standing at attention together -- the impact isn't at all "star"-focused, much to the performer's chagrin. I usually note how long it takes. It should be 02:05.00 if done briskly and well; performers often uncomfortably stretch it out.

They’re not jazz songs…they’re suppose to be inspirational and sung that way, IMOHO.

I prefer the National Anthem be sung instead of performed. I want to sing along, not watch.

And when the whole crowd sings, it’s great…even when the singer freezes up:

just for funsies I watched the halftime show again. still didn't care for it. the internet is split, some saying it was "historic" (??) and others saying it sucked. it supposedly had some hidden meanings but 1) I don't care about your hidden meanings and 2) if I can't understand a word you're saying, how am I even supposed to get the drift of your hidden meanings? just entertain my bruh, I don't GAF about your agenda.

It sucked in a historic way.

I'm far more annoyed by the performers who try and do all kinds of crazy modulation on every note. I didn't feel like Jon Batiste was making it about himself. If anything, he was making it about NOLA.

I find them to be *extra* inspirational when there is a jazz component to it, because Jazz is the most American music there is. And when you're in New Orleans, a city with a rich musical history centered around jazz, it would be almost silly not to incorporate some of that local flavor.

And I need to get back to NOLA soon. It's been too long. I *love* the food, music, drinks, and atmosphere and I need to check out the Arsenal of Democracy museum, it's supposed to be fantastic.

I also like to sing along... But it's rare for any star performer to do a rendition that's easy to sing along with these days. The best is probably the guy who does it every game for the Chicago Blackhawks, Jim Cornelison.

I was watching ESPN Sports Center from the treadmill about an hour ago and whoever was hosting that particular segment mentioned the genius of the halftime show. She said, “That halftime show had so many layers to it that I’m not even going to talk about it.”

Well, I guess that’s something.

…“That halftime show had so many layers to it that I’m not even going to talk about it.”…

I heard similar commentary from somewhere else, too.

In case you're interested in a study in contrasts, remember that the first bowl half time show was a jet pack demonstration.
