I learned today that the horse my sister's owned for something like 20 years had to be put down because someone shot it with a shotgun and shattered one of it's knees. It had been grazing in a pasture near a road. She lives in the San Antonio TX area. I can't believe anyone would be so cruel!

Probably some pseudo-gangster. Classy, real big man.

all too common. Horrible each time. My condolences to your sis, Lance.

I'm a peaceful man. I don't hunt. I don't kill things in order to eat. Peaceful.

But people that do that sort of awful mess bring up a real bad side of me, and it's brought up hot.

Lovely.

"Hey Earl! I think that's a deer! Or mebbe a moose!"
"Better shoot it Dwayne!"
"Gimme another Lone Star first!"

Lance, sorry to hear that. And more sorry for your sister.

Some of those "cowboys" (and that's the perjorative) are real losers. One reason I'm just as glad to not be in SA any more.

What the ****. Please tell your sister that I'm sorry she had to deal with that.

Defiantly sorry for the horse, but tell your sister we feel her loss. (we've been there)

there are people who should not have guns.

Lance:

This situation just makes me sick to my stomach and I'm in mourning with your sister; and furious at the scum who would do such a vile act. I grew up on a Maine farm: cows, team horses, laying hens, the works. As a youngster I can remember that my grandfather could point to every corner of the fields and name "Bob and Dick over there; Jack and Jerry over there; Kit and Bess over in that corner; and other similarities.
I found it difficult to comprehend the significance of events during his 70 years(from the late 1800s) of running the farm. What it was -- each corner was the resting place of a team of oxen or horses, each of which(one team member at a time) had become unable to pull its load(no pun intended), and having come into failing health, would be put down. And Grampy, in his own privacy, would take care of the task. It might be years later, but when the other team member's "time" had come it was customary to join his original mate. Though to me, seemingly ghastly, it had to be done. I'm tearing up just relating the situation, remembering that Grampy was the recognized expert in town. If the girls around town had a horse that wasn't feeling well for whatever reason, their Dads would likely say, "Go see Frank Crute; he'll tell you what to do."

But the deal with your sister's horse? I'm ANGRY!!!

The fields I referenced(above) though I only captured part of same? The barns are long gone; the red house was built in 1862; the fields haven't produced crops other than hay for over 40 years. But the memories are long; and I know right where Bob and Dick, Jack and Jerry, and, and, and. . . .

Grrrr. Anyone who would intentionally hurt an innocent animal is close to the bottom of the list of lowlifes in my book. I'll never understand people who get off of that kind of cruelty. I hope they catch the scumbags. My sympathies to your sister.

Texas sucks....

Now wait a damn minute here...

There is no need to make that kind of gross generality in this situation that would lump all of us self-respecting people from Texas in with the low-life scum that would do such a disgusting act. In fact, a couple of fellow Texans spoke up condemning such a thing. I'm just as pi**ed off as everyone else about this cruel and senseless thing, and it could just as easily have happened anywhere. The unfortunate fact that it occurred in Texas has nothing to do with anything.

I'm sure there are many more Texans willing to round up and beat the a**hole who did this senseless than there would be who would support the pointless shooting of helpless animals.

Lance, that's horrible. I really wonder what the people who do those sorts of things are thinking.

People like that serve no useful function in society.

I'll also agree with PJ, most Texans I've met are far more the type to shoot people like that than to shoot the horse. There're some lowlifes in every group.

Far too many dumb ass people on this planet. I am constantly amazed at all the shot up signs out in rural areas. I guess this time one of those people wanted a different target than a metal sign and instead decided it would be more manly to shoot a horse. What a jerk!

A lose of animal is hard, in someways I think we bond to them in ways more complex than we do to people. My condolences.

In Texas, isn't killing someone else's horse punishable by death? Seriously.

I am really sorry and shocked to hear this. I can't believe someone would shoot a horse out in a pasture. I agree, there are lowlifes everywhere and better to shoot them than poor defenseless animals.

In this instance no, unfortunately. It'd be Cruelty to Livestock Animals. It's a state jail felony. Unless the value of the horse is more than $20,000, then you could file it as Criminal Mischief and get it up to a 1st-3rd Felony depending on the actual value. Death penalty only applies to capital crimes. Doesn't mean we couldn't wish for it though. Worthless POS deserves it for that kind of cruelty if you ask me.

I lived in TX for 7 years, My ex wife still owns the ranch I bought, fenced and built on there, I even tried to make a living there, but was continuously forced out of state and off shore by **** poor wages there. If it's not a deathly drought going on, it's freakin flooding or the trains are getting blown over by the wind. Everybody drives down the dirt road at 70mph stirring up dust and running over my pets. I have earned the right to say "Texas sucks." I have been kind and not added my typical reference to donkey balls.

I only lived there for a year and I 'learnt' that Texas sucks too! :D

It only took a couple months to figure it out. Took a few years leave....

Oh yeah, that slimy crap Texans call BBQ sucks too...

I kinda licked Texas BBQ, I still prefer GA/FL or even TN as it is a little sweater. NC too vinegary for me. KS BBQ is also at the low end in my estimation.

Lance, I too am sick to hear stories like this. I'm sorry for your sister's loss. I suppose we could hope it was an accident of some kind, but unfortunately there are people that do such despicable things intentionally...in all states.

How does one accidentally shoot a horse on the side of the road in the knee caps?

JOOC, Henning, where in the state were you? There's a lot of Texas to choose from.

By way of returning to the original post topic (sorta), I would not be at all surprised to find that the perpetrator of this foul deed was not from Texas, anyway. Sucking or not, there are a whole lot of people moving here everyday...

Why? Texas has more than it's fair share of morons. I lived in west Texas which was hardly colonized by people from the other states like the metroplex is. There were plenty of moronic rednecks to go around. Lots of drinking, driving, and shooting. Mostly happening all at the same time. A favorite pass time of the locals out west was shooting oil rigs and speed limit signs.

They occasionaly would slow down to throw beer cans at motorcylce riders too.:rolleyes:

Henning, if your opinion is that Texas sucks, I can respect that (I happen to disagree, but that's my right just as it is yours to think it sucks). I raised a stink about it because you simply made the statement in this thread without qualifying it - had you said something like, "this is another reason why I think Texas sucks", I wouldn't have had as big of a problem with it. Someone like myself, who has no knowledge of your background other than listening to you on the Pilotcast the one time, would see that simple post in here and naturally infer that you think all of Texas and all Texans are like the worthless POS that did this. I hope you can see why I took offense to your statement.

Now that I understand where you're coming from, I'm no longer offended, though I definitely disagree. I've lived in Texas for 6 years now, and I've loved every minute of it. As of right now, I hope I never leave, and I encourage others to come on down and join me. Oh, as for which BBQ is the best, that is a matter of personal preference. I've found that it's useless to compare one to the next and call it all BBQ - if you recognize each one as its own separate, distinct food, they are all good (or bad) in their own way. Personally, I really like the Texas BBQ.

Discussing who has the best BBQ, I think that figuring out who has the one true religion is an easier and less divisive question to discuss ;)

You like Texas 'cause of where you live. I really did not like west Texas at all. I do like Austin and even San Antonio. I only lived in San Antonio for a few months. I have been to Dallas/Fort Worth a lot for work and hope to never live there. Too big, too crowded, too homogeneous.

Aif Force basic is not "living in San Antonio."

World's Best BBQ? That's easy -- mine.

I did not say that is when I lived there. AND BTW I am not counting when I was their for OTS either. LAFB is not even close to living. Don't assume things that were not written. Had included those times then I would have had three extended stays in SA.

OK, then toss in a trip to AF Charm School....

Back to the horse- I'm sorry this happened. Too many of these sorts of people on the earth.

Dan, untill you present your BBQ for comparsion to Andrew Stanley's I'm sorry I'll have to go with Andrew's... best darn BBQ ever.

Sorry to hear this Lance. Makes me mad also.
The way I console myself when things like that happen is folks that do things like this usually do enough where it eventually comes back on them. May this person get as much as they deserve or more.

Best,

Dave

Is that a challenge??! :D

I feel myself being dragged in...:yikes:

Show up to Wings next May and you can present yours for challenge. Until then, I agree - Andrew Stanley's is the best. ;)

It happens more often then you'd think. Horses, cows, dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens - if you live in a rural setting anywhere, you'll sooner or later find deliberately injured ones. I never came across anyone doing it, but from the time I started driving I had a breaker bar with me, and it wasn't for changing tires.

I'm sorry for your sister and the horse. A horse is every bit as much a companion as a dog.
