I’m often hunting for the thread “Daily Pic”, so I put that in the magnifying box, select thread titles only,

and I don’t see it.

the thread:

The search string is ANDed, not literal. Type "daily pic" (double quotes) for the exact string.
Without quotes it shows up, but you have to scroll down a bit in the results to find it.

True, but the search function still behaves weird. For example, search for "joke day" without the quotes and the "Let's make Friday Joke Day" thread, with 18,801 posts shows up sixth.

Even more nonsensical, if you select "search titles only", it doesn't show up at all! ???

I seem to always have problems finding threads with the search tool.

As another example, if you search for myflightbook (without the "search titles only" checked), "The Myflightbook thread" is the first result. Makes sense, an active thread with lots of instances of the search term.

But if you do check the "search titles only" box, then it shows up sixth, behind much older threads that have not had any activity in a long time, like one of mine that hasn't had any posts in 8 years.

I'm curious what the sort logic is for search results, it definitely doesn't seem logical to me.

The default XF search is pretty lousy, but there's an addon to improve it. I'll try putting that on later this week to see if it helps.
