The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
At the Fort Worth Copart Auction today. Gotta wonder what the other vehicle was, the velocity, and its final condition.

Oh my that must have really hurt. Those trucks don't have much give once the engine comes in contact with the other car or the frame. I bet it looked pretty good considering. Bad choices. There better be jail time involved. It is a huge responsibility to drive a big heavy vehicle like that. Very bad choices.

Is there anything that can even be salvaged out of that? Maybe the turn signal stalk?

That protective cage around the driver sure did its job.

Hopefully there wasn't anyone in the back

Crash occurred at 11:30 pm and the officer was release from the hospital by 4:30 am. That's a miracle given how bad that truck looks.

Maaaaybe the motor and transmission. Which is the reason my auction software picked it out of the list.

But with the hard hit to the rear, the force would have traveled up the driveshaft, so there is a chance of damage to those parts.

Since most municipalities are self insured they will still strip all the radios, electronics, and add on parts that they can out of wrecked cruisers then send it to the crusher.

Remember this guy and his Chevy "short-bus" pickup, who survived being sandwiched between two semis?

The only "protective cage" left happened to be the tiny amount his body was squeezed into.

Walked away with "a cut above his eye and a few scratches"

Unbelievable! What a miracle!

As far forward as the rear axle and driveshaft were driven I'm guessing the transmission is trash.

It's always nice that Government Motors can still build the heavy duty Tahoe frame for Government but it's against the law to sell them to the general public new, because, fuel economy and saving the planet and all.

I have such a fear of being trapped that if I was this person I would go total insane in about 3 minutes.

Can't imagine what was going through his head during that.

Think of the stories he can tell at the office, though. No one would believe him without the pics.

I can, he was probably thinking something like Get me the heck outta here....!!!!

I would have been heard for miles. I am so afraid of being trapped that I can't wear tight clothes. When I raced I always wore a two piece fire suit. However, when I put on the helmet I felt safe. Go figure.....

No figgering, yer just nuts. You're welcome.

Where is your info that the basic frame of the Special Service Tahoes is different from a consumer Tahoe?

The "pursuit rating" adds some stuff. But really this thing started years ago at the demise of the 3500 HD frame version.

Either way, it's still one of those "Okay for me, but not for thee" types of rules that just leads to me raising my middle finger at lawmakers.

Especially when the Sheriff in my county always has vehicles that are better than most of the Citizens here. I think they should get to drive around in the same crap most of the people drive out here rather than charge us all for new vehicles every three years. None of the normal folk out here buy new like that.

Brand new Chargers unmarked covered in LEDs hidden in the grill? No. You get a Kia. "Pursuit rated"? Nope. Get a nice Corolla and drive it until the wheels fall off. Haha.

Want nicer? Go do the job in the big city where the tax base covers all your toys. The hippies will even get ya a Prius. LOL!! Can re-enact the Toyota commercials. Haha.

Brand new Chargers and Tahoes... pffft.

I agree. CSU PD has a jurisdiction that includes one block around campus. Good thing my tuition dollars are paying for their pursuit Chargers and brand new explorers to patrol a 2 mile by 2 mile square.

I guess if we had to pick our poison, new vehicles is a lot better than giving PDs explosives. Greenwood Village decided to blow up that dude's house for a shoplifting suspect right after their "grants" got them some nice explosives and just barely enough brains not to blow themselves up using it.

Last I checked the dude was still in the process of suing the city since when he went to rebuild exactly what he had before they blew massive holes in his house, he would have to bring the entire property up to current code at his own expense.

And of course it looked like lawmakers had carefully covered their bases and made sure the city wasn't liable for ****, even when grossly negligent.

Wow. Had to look that one up. City condemned the house and it was torn down. PD offered $5,000 in compensation.

Not sure how it works at CSU, but years ago I asked a city cop buddy of mine how jurisdiction worked in Lawrence, KS and the University of Kansas. I was riding with him one night and we were driving through campus as a shortcut. At least back then: Campus is part of the city, so city cops have jurisdiction on campus. Campus cops are commissioned by the State and actually have jurisdiction through the whole State. They generally try to stay out of each other's turf.

So, you don't have info to support the claim in your post regarding the strength of the frame in accidents being any different for special service Tahoes vs. consumer ones.

Everything I see indicates suspension differences, not frame differences. I suspect the suspension differences aren't all that much different, if at all, from a Z71 off-road package.

No, not in the current models. They removed the frame differences long ago. Even the government doesn't get the HD frame anymore.

Just a perennial dumbing down of the product, but the beefier models are deemed unworthy of your dollar, unless you filtered it through a tax payment first.

Gotta keep Government Motors rolling, after all. Need some good G-Man trucks.

But you can't have one like these from the factory. Lowers fleet economy numbers, don'cha know? Can't have that.

Argh I thought Buford T. Justice spoke that line. Went back and don't see that exact phrase. My bad.

I don't recall the Dodge Charger commercial, will look for it. I've been a Mopar fan since the 70's. Had a '72 Charger that was an unmarked police car, got it from the city auction. Found a 12 gauge shotgun shell in the trunk...

No brand haters please, I also had a '68 GTO I wish I never sold. Also liked the Ford pickups family members owned. Oh, and the land yacht '72 Cadillac Sedan Deville my grandfather gave me. What a beast that thing was, another one I wish I had not sold.

You can call me Luke or you can call me Doug, just don't call me late for dinner.

I think that cop was racing his other cop buddy in reverse and lost it.

Boredom and a vehicle you don't own... Not sure I'd do different.

That said, in 100% agreement with the why brand new cars thing. I live in one of the poorer counties in Virginia, but the sheriff's have '14-'17 chargers. All with the actual alloy rims.

I've seen the fleet pricing on our company trucks, and it's attractive, but I know there isn't a $0 upgrade from black steelies to those wheels. What's the justification? More broadly, what's the justification for new cars at all every 3 years?

Picture this: Your family is being assaulted. Police are called. They rush to the scene in their 15 year old patrol cars that have seen severe duty every day of their lives. The cars break down 1 mile from your house.

Not saying a new car can't break down, but I want the police, and fire and ambulance to not break down when needed.

Actually, not a Charger but a Challenger.

I'm picturing it... I'm just not picturing the steel wheels making the difference.

Without getting into a passionate argument, I'll just say I disagree. Plenty of volunteer fire departments get by with very old, but we'll maintained equipment, which is mechanically more complex than any cop cruiser.

Sometimes they have no choice...want the police package? Gotta take the alloy rims.

So the government has no problem controlling every other aspect of our lives on a whim, but is unable to specify what wheels they want? If you believe that then I have a bridge to sell you...
