I haven't subscribed to this magazine for many years. I currently take Flying. P&P recently sent me a subscription offer for 2 years for $15. Are they a decent mag, worth the money? Just curious how they would compare for GA reading material. Thanks.

Edit: I will probably not take both. If I accept the P&P offer, I will most likely let Flying expire.

I think Plane and Pilot is geared more toward little airplane/Private Pilot type flying. Try it. If you like it, then drop Flying if you want. If you don’t, you aren’t out much.

It's good reading most of the time. Lately they have gone to what I describe as print clickbait. The cover has some breathless hook that leads to a story which is a bit sensationalized.

But it's geared to the GA pilot. Flying, not so much, but the pictures of Gulfstreams are nice.

Reviews on airplanes that 99% of us can’t afford...but for that price we can dream...

The December issue had a cover story about ten affordable planes, it was realistic and well written.

Flying will be starting a series on Affordable planes in March...

That's the kind of material I enjoy reading. Yeah, it's okay to read about the newest version of the HondaJet. But I like reading about 2 and 4 place piston GA aircraft more than the fancier stuff.

I've seen articles on the topic before, and yes it's doable. Now, if one is working part time jobs at minimum wage, no. But then cars are not very affordable for that person either. There are lots of used planes in the sub $100k range. There are currently 87 single piston engine planes on controller for $50k or less.

For Apple aficionados, Flying, Plane & Pilot and Air and Space are all included in Apple News+.

$9.99/month, so not worth it if that’s all you’re interested in. But it’s a very deep catalog including lots of big names, so it might be a bargain for magazine lovers.

I tried it for a month or two early on. Personally, I find the magazine format a bit static compared to online forums.

I did not know that. My son has an iPad, so I may have to look into that. They probably don't have a 1-month free trial, do they? I'm not a big news person, so it may not be worth it to me anyway. But it would be interesting to go in and look around at the offerings.

I think the first month is free. If you like magazines, the list includes National Geographic, Rolling Stone, Scientific American and all sorts of hobby offerings, including the top car, motorcycling, bicycling, and sports offerings and a lot, lot more. Easy to Google “Apple New+” for a comprehensive list.

I get both Flying and Plane & Pilot. Have for many years. I enjoy both but prefer P&P for typical lower-budget GA topics. P&P is oriented that way. Flying leans more toward business aviation. You can't go wrong with P&P for that intro price. I'm sure that you wont be disappointed.

Lately? I think it's been that way a long time. I remember reading an article that was on the cover as touting a back-to-back comparison of something like a 172 and an Archer. Turns out the article was literally just a recitation of book figures. No actual flying took place for the article.

I get them digitally for free via my library’s app, with a notification and auto download each time a new issue is available.

Not the same as paper, but I’m not going to complain about the cost.

I love P&P. Oriented towards an audience that includes (I imagine) most of us.

If you only want one ,go with P&P . Unless your into turbines and jets.

For $1.60 a month, it's a good read. Also like supporting this part of GA aircraft industry that has staff reviewing products and sharing the latest in a print form. For me nice respite from on-line.

Any Aviation Consumer fans out there? That’s my jam.

Where did you get the 2 year subscription offer for $15? Is it available to others as well because that s a good deal and Id like it as well if its open to others.

I was sent the offer in the mail. I went online this morning, but I could not get the print subscription section to come up on their website. I don't know if that offer is available to everyone.

I pick up P&P from time to time, might eventually subscribe but haven't. I currently have a subscription to Martha Lunken's column, which comes in a very fancy wrapper that says "Flying" on the cover and has a bunch of advertising. If Martha ever moved to P&P, I'd just subscribe to it and drop the other.

I prefer Plane & Pilot.
Like Half Fast, I read Flying for Martha's column.

There have been some wonderful columnists at Flying in the not so recent past. Now Peter Garrison and Martha are all that's left.

Different strokes, I guess. I'm sure Martha would be fun to talk with, but her columns always seem rambling and without direction to me. I often find myself wondering what the topic even is.

Ha! Is there such a thing as an affordable plane?

Well it’s relative for sure... I think even entry level middle income can afford to fly like I do. I drive two older cars, live in a paid for house, and fly a 20k plane that drinks 5gph...

No doubt, the way you do it opens up ownership to more people. Flying clubs, partnerships, and renting help, too.

Must be different strokes for sure! I pick up the FBO's copy of Flying, read her article and then put it back!

I don’t know, 63 cents an issue is a lot of money.

for sure! And i do a blend. Im part of a 12 person equity club w a nice 180hp 172... so i have my baby for chasing sunsets, burgers and taking camping, but when I need a more capable machine i have access to one. I figure i have “a lot of plane” for under 25k!

but being relative, i know ppl who consider me “well off” for being able to afford this set up...

ps. I think a pic of my bird will be in that March issue... Im pretty stoked...
