OSH 2014 -- Who's In?

The thread drift brings up a question on my mind.

I need an alternate in case we get near KOSH but can't get in for weather or any other reason. We're coming from TX.

What town or city or hamlet would be good as an alternate with possibly an available hotel room in case of weather or OSH field shutdown? Somewhere South -SouthWest of KOSH....

My home field is Hartford, KHXF. About 40 miles south, and just a smidge to the east. There is no FBO or rental car on site, though. But we do have cheap fuel.

Thanks.

I'm still flight planning and I'll check it out.

We're going to be real close to gross. So I don't know quite yet if we can take off with full tanks until the day of really. I'll have to weigh everything that hasn't been weighed beforehand, and see what we can do. I may have to take off with 50-60 gallons instead of my extended tank capacity of 81. I'm figuring up two flight plans for each scenario.

Look up Portage. Autogas if you can burn it, brats on the stove sunup/sundown. VERY friendly folks and a nice little town.

Flown over it a few times, but usually I skip it and fly to the Dells. We have mogas at my field. Lone Rock is a southeast of Portage and has a good on field restaurant that makes a good breakfast. Nothing like taxiing and parking 20 feet from the front door.

Madison is probably your best bet to meet all of those requirements guaranteed in one place.

We are also flying up from Texas, and are holing up for the first night in Prairie Du Chein, WI. (KPDC)

This serves two purposes.

1. We are meeting friends who are flying in from CA there. We will fly into OSH as a flight of three (or 5) on Sunday morning.

2. It's a beautiful airport, situated at the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers, that will leave us with a simple ~1flight to OSH.

This is important because you do NOT want to do the FISK approach at the end of an 8-hour day of flying. You want to be fresh, sharp, and ready for anything.

It also gives us a place to lay low for a day if the weather up by OSH sucks. PDC is a lovely town, with a riverboat casino and other things to keep us occupied for a day, if needed.

We used to fly there a lot when we lived in Iowa. It's a nice place.

02C (Capital City) had a mogas pump a few years ago when I stopped in there to grab a bite to eat (Subway and Culvers right off the field).

Thanks Jay. I'll look it up.

The old guy going with us is a ten time OSH veteran, and so far, he's expecting we're going to fly all the way from 11R to OSH on the first Saturday.

I have my reservations, because like you, I don't want to get there after 6-7 hours of flying and fly the FISK. We may overnight like you guys and then go in the next morning. :dunno: I guess it depends on how I feel when we get up there. My older friend is a pilot too, but he can't land the 180. He could try, but he's never landed one.

I urge you to not fly straight from Brenham into OSH.

Yes, 95% of the time, the FISK approach is simplicity itself. Sometimes you won't even see another plane, and you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.

But 5% of the time, it can be pretty intense. I have been put in a hold around Rush Lake that ended up three abreast, and Mary has had to do a 270-degree turn to final while hot, heavy, and slow.

I am simply not mentally or physically prepared to deal with that after an 8+ hour day in the cockpit. When I hit Ripon, I want to be 110% on my game, and I want everyone around me to be the same.

Spend the night an hour out. You'll thank me later.

This will be our second year at OSH and we will be camping again. I know I'm a little late for this party but I'm so excited! I know you all understand.

See you there.

Tiffany

Well, I mentioned this to ol' Ken today and he scoffed like 'no sweat' "FISK is easy, and we're going early" ....

Sorry Jay, but you're a puss. (according to Ken) :dunno: He was speaking generally, I mentioned no names to protect the innocent. :D

I'll make the call when we get up there and see how we feel, and how all the other factors are like weather, traffic, etc ... . I'm PIC. I haven't forgotten that.

Even though it is only 4 hours from my home field to Osh, we always stop a half hour or so away (ARR is a frequent stop), to stretch legs, relieve bladders, get fuel, etc. The last thing I want is to be distracted by a full bladder and/or empty tanks while I'm flying the arrival.

I've done Oshkosh non stop (a touch under 5 hours a number of times). We carry 8 hours of fuel on board.

Leslie and I just bought our weekly passes and Camp Scholler passes. We will be in Camp Bacon again this year. Her mother won't be with us, unfortunately. We're still planning to have the PoA dinner there on Tuesday as usual, and the Babes dinner on Thursday. It'll be stressful without Mom to help out this year! We still haven't decided if we'll be there the entire week this year. Leslie deserves some time to relax and recuperate.

Tell Leslie I will be more than happy to help. Just let me know what time.

Like I say, most of the time it's no big deal. You should be fine.

Or not.

Jay, I'll see you there. I'll be flying my Kitfox from Leander, Tx. @ 68 knots. One overnight stop near Mexico, Mo. And one night at The Brodhead fly-in, early Sunday am departure for KOSH. You'll know me because I'll be wearing my Amelia's shirt.

Sweet! Enjoy the journey!

Let's hope the weather improves Up North soon.

Since I've started flying RVs, I've flown into the Fisk approach after flying straight up from Texas with only one fuel stop near Kansas City. It was not a big deal, but I've also stopped at Portage for cheap fuel and a bite to eat since it's lunchtime about the time I get there and it's a pretty scenic little airport to land at before the final leg to OSH, just keep an eye out for those scary-looking high voltage towers and wires that pass just south of runway 35 if you're landing to the north. Another neat thing about Portage is that a GPS direct path from the Portage airport to KOSH will line you up perfectly for the south shore of Green Lake and Ripon to start following the railroad tracks to Fisk.

Neal points out something that can't be mentioned too often: Lining up for the FISK approach BEFORE Ripon pays dividends.

Every year, coming up from Iowa City as a flight of 5 or 10 aircraft, we would fly (if memory serves) a 043 heading. This lined up precisely with the FISK approach, heading up the railroad tracks, meaning no maneuvering in the often crowded skies over Ripon.

This may sound trivial, but in a high workload environment, anything you can do to reduce effort is good. If there's going to be a conflict in the approach, its going to be over Ripon where everyone falls into the cha-cha line.

This year we are overnighting in Prairie du Chein, WI, which will give us roughly the same entry angle over Ripon. (Looks like we've got five planes, so far...). We chose that destination partially for that reason. (Well, the riverboat casino MAY have played in, as well... :) )

So the wife agreed to 3 days at Oshkosh this year:goofy:. It will be our first and we are planning on staying in the North 40 but are struggling on what days.

We can arrive sunday, depart Wednesday or arrive thursday depart saturday OR arrive friday and depart Sunday? It doesnt matter, since our schedules are flexible.

Our main intentions are to look at planes, lots of planes, especialy since we are in the market to purchase in the next year, air shows are fun but not on the top of the list, making sure we have a location to camp in would be a priority so maybe earlier in the week is better? :dunno: or not?:dunno:

We are pretty laid back, not real big on crowds, light social drinkers (so meeting some POA'ERS in camp would be fun), would like to limit congestion on arrival and departure days (but not concerned)

I read a previous post regarding Static displays are more prevalent earlier in the week and shows toward the end, but was confused when someone said it was actually busier in the beginning. Would this include Sunday flying in.:dunno:

Any more info would help.

After 36 years of Oshkosh ...

The first days of the show are the best, hands down. Sunday through Wednesday is optimum. Everybody is fresh, the grass is still green, and the vast majority of the aircraft that are going to be there are already there.

The forums are better; along towards the end of the week they start filling in with reruns of the same forum(s).

HOWEVER, having said that, if you are bargain hunting, the last day is by far the best. Everybody who brought something to sell and didn't sell them all do NOT want to cart them home and there are some real bargains on the last day. The other side of that coin is that the popular items have already sold out.

My call is first day through Wednesday (you don't want to miss Jay's PI$$ party on Wednesday (that's Pilots, Instructors, Students, and Slackers. Or something like that) in the North 40 :cheers::cheers:

Jim

This will be my second year, so I don't have the long term advice of the previous guy (seems like good advice though), but you can go out to the AirVenture website and see what's going on each day to see if there is something on a particular day you don't want to miss.

I am beginning to think Sunday mon tue will be the best. Give us Sunday to scope out the place and see everything less trampled possibly cleaner...then plan for Monday....should be no problem getting a campsite and set up...

How will I recognize any one else from here if I want to introduce myself. I am not completely sure what plane I will be taking so I can update you when it's decided..

Well, if you show up after Wednesday, you can simply look for this shirt: (They just came in today!)

BTW: Here is today's word re: the Android app for AirVenture 2014, from the developer himself:

"I thought we were going to release it yesterday, but I had to go and find a bug in my testing. The developers worked on it overnight, and I'm expecting a new version from them any time now. As soon as I get it, I'll make sure that they fixed it, and then we'll push it to Google Play and Amazon. I'm told that their approval process only takes a few hours, but I don't know that with certainty - I just know it's less than the 10 days - 2 weeks required by Apple..."

BTW: The Apple app that is out now is just a teaser -- stay tuned for the fully functional app in a day or two.

My wife can't get off work, so we're flying from St. Louis to Madison Friday night (8/1) in a rental Piper Turbo Arrow IV, spending the night, and leaving for OSH with an old work buddy of mine from Madison around 6:30am on Saturday.

We'll head back Saturday after the first airshow. I know, only one day sucks but it's all we can swing this year. We did a full week (driving up, though) in 2011 and it was definitely the better way to go :)

I just hope the annual t-storm doesn't interfere with our arrival/departure times...we don't have a big margin of error :nonod:

Looks like we will be arriving late sunday or early monday depending on favorable weather. Departing thursday early am. My friend was thinking of staying in a locals house set up as a bed and breakfast but I'll probably camp in n40 again. Hope to make the hops party this year.

Mike

I'll be up. I'll probably stop by this weekend, and then be up again wed night thru saturday probably.

Anyone have room for a tent in the N40? I'd fly in, but the arrival is a ***** in a sailplane ;-)

Don't know about the N40, but we can fit you in at our site in Scholler! We won't arrive until Sunday, though. Same location as last year.

Jay ... If you will give me an eta and a phone call departing your last stop, I'll record your arrival into OSH, both Fisk and Tower.

Everything is up in the air right now. The weather prediction for Sunday has taken an unexpected turn for the worse. Jack and Steve are in Scotts Bluff, NE, and are watching the same thing.

Our plan is still to make PDC tomorrow, but we may need to press on into OSH tomorrow evening to get ahead of Sundays crap weather.

We shall see. Departure in T-minus 13:45 hours.

Well, I've suddenly decided to show up at Osh this year with a friend and his boys. Haven't started out yet but looking at the weather, Sunday looks a bit challenging, Monday a bit better. We'll see.

Will be in HBC and hope to be there for Wednesday. Just picked up a 6 of our local best an hour ago.

Sweet! See ya then!

I was planning on heading to the HOPS party Wednesday night to meet you guys, and staying until after the air show Thursday. My son is having tubes installed on Tuesday morning, so now I'm a game day decision of whether I go at all.

If I do go I plan to park at GA parking. Anyone got space for an extra tent for one night?
