Hello All,

After a 14 year break from flying (I'll spare you the details) I have once again picked up where I left off in terms of the complete joy of flying I experienced in Southern California and points beyond. Obtained my 3rd clas medical and then recieved a comprehensive Flight Review for VFR flight at John C Tune airport in Nashivlle. Interesting enough, it was in the same C-172 I flew in 2000 while visiting Nashville. Same airplane, but with a Garmin 430 now. When I stopped flying in 03', GPS was just coming online so I have no experience sans twisting knobs on a GPS that was in a new C-182 at the time.

A little about me. I'm a Liscensed SEL, Instrument with HP, Complex and taildragger endorsements with ~425/hrs. I was an AOPA member for 10 years up until 2003 and I plan to join again ASAP.

I'm impressed with how the AOPA webiste has evolved and I'm currently working through the online basic VFR course for the Garmin 430

Look forward to learning from others to strengthen my overall aviation education. But I have much to catch up on.... Like, when I broke out the VFR sectional at my first meeting with the CFI. He jokingly asked what is that? We use those for cockpit sunshades as he went into detail how Foreflight and Ipads rule the day. For now, VFR flight is fine as I'm just boring holes in the sky around the local area.

Regards
MF

Welcome back! And welcome to POA, a wild and crazy place, but a ton of good information.

Thank you. I have since downloaded the Garmin 430 simulator and have found it very useful. I suspect I'll soon complete a flight review for my IFR currency

The POA sight is very active I see and look forward to sharing my knowledge but more importantly, learning from others

"mooney fan"??!!? eh, mooneys are aight.

so wait, are you based out of tune? my goal is to get up that way to catch a hockey game one day.

welcome to PoA!

Welcome back, Mooney Fan! I have flown into Tune a few times. Nice airport, close to downtown and friendly folks.

Welcome back to flying and welcome to POA.... For your safety please be sure to keep your hands, feet and feelings inside the vehicle at all times....:rollercoaster:

For what it's worth, I fly my Mooney with sectionals. The tablet is great for approach plates, etc. But I'm not going to trust my certificate or my butt to whatever GPS chip is in the stinkin' tablet when I have a certified WAAS navigator right there in the panel (430W).

Welcome back! And fly safe.

Hit me up. Maybe we can go around the pattern or something

I did the same thing after about a 25 year break. Similar numbers to yours without the tail dragger. It took more than a few hours to get an IPC done. The CFII said why don't you just do it on steam and work on the GPS later. I decided to work through it then and got the IPC done proficient in GPS. It does a lot of cool stuff but it definetly increases 'task management.' There are some good videos out there. Google Garmin 430. Some are long and detailed and technical. There are some from Avweb that are 'real world' friendly and while not covering everything we're real helpful to me in 'putting the pieces together.' Have fun.

;)
Only a paint chip from that sexy tail . . . . .

Oh geez....here we go again. Just finished reading a thread on BeechTalk about guys looking at each other's tails.

What's the world coming to!

Btw- op welcome to POA.
