NA iPhone text alerts

When I send a text out, the phone makes a whoosh sound.
When my phone is dark, and a text comes in, it is silent; how to enable a sound? It used to tone.
Volume is max, switch on side is on, I am not deaf.
iPhone 4 ios 7.1.2 (current)

Click on the settings (looks like a gear) and then Sounds. Scroll down past the ring tones to the other sounds and make sure they are turned on.

Another place to look....
Settings-notifications-messages-
-make sure the notifications switch is on.

Do you have a little moon in the top bar of your phone?

You have the phone in do not disturb mode.

You have "do not disturb" mode turned on. Swipe up from the very bottom of your screen and you'll see a settings screen with a similar moon at the top. Deselect it.



You'll also find it in "Settings > Do Not Disturb"

Thanks. I think I accidentally get the bottom screen to scroll up, then in a panic try to get rid of it and probably hit the moon. Did not notice it. Was not disturbed for several days.
