SS on a collision course for bankruptcy and our debt are HUGE problems. sticking your head in the sand and saying "we will get through it" is why the mess keeps getting bigger.
I didn't say do nothing. I said we'll work through them, and the world will not come crashing down. But I am a bit of an optimist. I can tell you I am planning on a retirement without SS, though.

Just to be clear, since this is a thread about boomers, are you blaming the boomers for that?

For allowing it to continue I blame everyone, for throwing their children's lives into it the fray to defend it, I definitely blame Boomers.

Yes it will, not over the **** assed reasons that we think are crucial, but because we are not using our resources to benefit mankind, but rather individuals, and we seek to have the markets create the most money they can with it. 9 billion people, mankind ends if we haven't changed from our 'Divine Right' method of resource allocation and commoditization of money.

I blame the Johnson Administration for coming up with the unified budget, which combined fiscal reporting of Social Security with other federal income and outlays. I think the motivation was to make it easier to hide the size of federal deficits, but it has had the effect of making it harder for people to figure out what's really going on.

People that can spend their discretionary income on one of the most expensive hobbies on a flying forum complaining about who screwed up their world. I bet there are a lot more people that would give anything to be in that world. I bet it looks pretty to many many many other people.

I think we'll make it far enough to colonize another planet, barring a planet buster asteroid before that time.

I'm glad someone else caught that irony.

What are the financial requirements for someone to have to STFU?

I mean my wife and I just love throwing nearly $30K per year at SS recipients. We could retire YEARS earlier if we didn't have that burden.

And if the system is not being managed in such a way as to allow you and she to reap appropriate benefits from that, then that should be changed.

There was a time when Joe Sixpack could afford to buy a fairly new airplane. I guess the millineals ****ed that up too?

I believe the litigious American public put an end to that. I'm not sure which generation was most responsible, but I'm sure that you're sure.

Someone with current details handy will be along to explain the impossibility of your claim.
Unlike myself that pays the full 15% for me and 7.5 % for each of my employees.

$14,694 per year each for me and my wife.

Current projections are that well lose $200,000 in SS. I'm not that optimistic. But hey, I own a 54 year old plane so shouldn't *****.

A friend said something the other day that I liked. He said we won the lottery for the gene pool. America is still a land of opportunity. A guy with nothing can work and become anything he wants to be. The hard part is recognizing when enough is enough and throttling back to enjoy a slower pace.

I think America has too much to offer us that it makes it hard to just settle in with where we have in life. I wish I didn't have this urge to want the next nicer/bigger/faster whatever. Life could be so much more enjoyable. What ****es me off is how expensive everything is getting.

The same could be said by boomers about school taxes. We have no kids in the schools anymore, so why pay the taxes? I personally wouldn't mind having that extra $6,470.00 / year to invest, rather than spending it to educate the over-indulged spawn of Gen X's and Millennials who would just as soon that my generation dropped dead en masse so theirs could retire a few years earlier.

But unlike most of your generation (except for Bryan, of course), most (though admittedly not all) of my generation grasps that there other people, and that their well-being matters, too. That's why you don't hear too many gray-hairs whining on incessantly about how those greedy, lazy elementary school children are stealing from us.

I'm not sure there was ever a time when Joe Six-Pack could afford an airplane; but if there was, then I also suspect that the legal establishment and the lack of disincentives from filing frivolous lawsuits had a big part in putting an end to it.

Because they are getting far more from the kitty then school taxes cost. A lot of what you boomers think is laziness is simply a rational decision not to play your game. Beat the beast by starving it.

Ya know the millenials might take your advice get off the couch and fix their lot in life. Doing so will mean killing off boomers. You guys still cheer them on for fixing their ****? Be funny to watch

BUT FIRST you'd have to find a few hundred thousand willing to leave their mother's basements and free stuff long enough to work hard and get dirty. Don't see that happening anytime soon, at least as long as we are around to support your dumb, lazy, entitled, asses.

I doubt that mother was a boomer.

And yet every gen x'er is ecstatic about more regulation to stop fracking, farming, manufacturing, and even rainwater, so the fat assed, lazy, jerks, need to GO DO SOMETHING, then talk smack to those of us who did.

Just keep in mind over there in the SZ when you guys are going on one of your rants about handouts that you're by far recieving the biggest slice.

And spent our adult lives paying in, which is far more than the 47% seem to be willing to do, and never will because you folks are intent upon driving the poor further into poverty and making damn sure you keep them in their place with just enough more free stuff to keep them docile and put of your way.

Uhhh... no I'm not for free stuff. Even you accomplish the feat of living to be 62.

And Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Nooooooooooooooooo Nooooooooooooooooo Nooooooooo YOU DIDN'T "PAY IN" A DAMN THING.

You got taxed, it got spent. Do you expect a refund on that sales tax from the pizza you bought back in 1972 too? I know it helps you reconcile SS with your ideology, but it's just a handount. Not unlike any other hand outs. Look at the old folks lining up at the polls to make sure the money spigot keeps running.

Time for the stupid argument. Congratulations you made a stupid argument. Now go collect your participation ribbon and go home and sulk that it isn't big, pretty, and blue.

Someone checked their libertarian ideology at the door again.

I don't have kids, doesn't look like i ever will. So, I'm with you there too. But the argument could be made that school is an "investment" in the future of our country. All SS is, is an investment in the Shuffleboard Palace somewhere in Florida. SS Recipients had nearly an entire lifetime to get their **** together. They've checked out, they're not contributing anymore nor will they be in the future. What exactly are we investing in? Other than assuring that people will be irresponsible during their lifetime then line up at the polls while being held captive by politicians for their handouts?

You turn awfully liberal when it comes to handouts you will receive.

J3's would be about $17,000 these days adjusted for inflation. A Bonanza would be around $77,000.

Actually, no, although this thread is about boomers and not the LP.

Nonetheless, the LP's platform favors parental control over education, the elimination of the public school monopoly, and the elimination of most government interference in education (including doing away with the DoEd, not abolition of education itself). The party's official summary position is:

LP Platform said:
Education is best provided by the free market, achieving greater quality, accountability and efficiency with more diversity of choice. Recognizing that the education of children is a parental responsibility, we would restore authority to parents to determine the education of their children, without interference from government. Parents should have control of and responsibility for all funds expended for their children's education.

There also are position papers and discussions that go into more detail, but the most commonly-held position would provide advance education tax credits (not unlike the EIC or Obamacare subsidies), which is basically vouchering. But again, this thread is about boomers, not the LP; so you can do your own research if you like.

Okay, now I understand: They serve no purpose in terms of anything that you perceive to be of any benefit to you, so **** 'em all.

Thanks for clarifying your position.

They had 62+ years to figure out how to save for retirement. I'm not sure why I should be happy about forking over 30k per year because they didn't. That's considerably more than my flying budget by the way. Note, I want nothing from the boomers.

I wasn't talking about school I was talking about SS wrt the lp platform.

According to decades of pamphlets, posters, and now the Internet, SS is an important part of retirement planning. Look at all the happy old people on the .gov site:

http://www.socialsecurity.gov/planners/retire/

We get it. You're bitter about being taxed to fund blue hair lifestyles. It's a fraud, a scam, a lie..blah, blah, blah. But to say people depend on it due to lack of planning is disingenuous. We all have an IOU "account" we were told to factor into planning.

I've already said that I believe the SS system is unsustainable and should be scrapped ,with suitable compensation to those who have paid into it, so where's the inconsistency?

Actually, the LP only believes that people should be able to "opt out" of it, not that it should be abolished altogether as I do. The LP also favors "keep[ing] the promises that were made to today's retirees, and to those nearing retirement;" so again, there's no inconsistency. Even the LP acknowledges that the taxes paid into the system came with a promise.

The platform position (excerpts) is:

LP Platform said:
Libertarians believe you should be able to opt out of Social Security and invest your money in your own personal retirement account. An account that you own and control - one that politicians can't get their hands on.

. . . .

The federal government owns assets worth trillions of dollars - assets that it simply doesn't need to perform its Constitutional functions. By selling those assets over time, we can keep the promises that were made to today's retirees, and to those nearing retirement, while freeing the rest of America from a failed Social Security system.

Libertarians will introduce and support legislation to give you that choice, and put you in control of your own retirement future.

I've been an LP member since 1999, and it's been my sole party affiliation since I quit the GOP about three or four years ago. I'm pretty familiar with the LP's platform. There are parts I agree with, parts I disagree with, and parts that I agree with in principle but don't think are realistically possible, at least not right now, given the reality of today's America. But again, that's really not the topic at hand. This thread is about the evil boomers, not the LP.

We still have a one party system, The Federal Reserve. Everything else is just a distraction, and since the same families that own the controlling interest of the member banks also own the controlling interest of the multinational conglomerates that own all the media outlets, they are very good at distracting with soap operas.

Yes, and this iteration of a central bank was founded in 1913, well before the baby boomers. The rich folks that own the fed make big money from wars, the advent of fiat currency, and generally manipulating the entire govt.

I think we'll make it far enough to colonize another planet, barring a planet buster asteroid before that time.

Colonizing another planet will require a level of cooperation we do not have (nor will, or should, it come before colonizing space). We will never have the resources available to do that when we waste 70% of everything, and half of what we spend money on is dedicated to the destruction of resources we already developed. We're going nowhere except extinct, we have until 9 billion people to get our **** together and evolve into a cooperative and productive species that delegates resources to best result for mankind rather than for greatest monetary profit, or we get replaced. We've had 6500 years and have utterly failed to evolve socially as required. We are a useless species that is just wasting resources and not providing the required return on investment in us. We fail to provide what we are meant for.

So what's the bad news?

So what's the bad news?

The bad news is that we have been a 6500 year waste of time. The bad news is today's children will pay the price for the cumulative greed of hundreds of generations... all because we just can't give up usury.
