I've been on a two day hunt for a particular type of florescence of light bulb . I finally found one shop that carries them for $10 a piece, but this isn't what the thread is about.

I had a box of burned out bulbs that I needed to get rid of and thought "obviously a light bulb shop would take them". Well I was right, however, it cost me .85¢ a tube for a total of $5 with tax.

I have never come across paying to recycle something before. Is this a normal practice with bulbs?

I didn't know anyone recycled light bulbs...

I don't think it is recycling. I think it is disposal like with old tires and batteries. I found that if I was disposing of onesies/twosies from my household, they could go in my normal trash. If I was disposing larger amounts or from a business, I had to go through some outfit to dispose of them (Arkansas). I never really dudg into the details.

CFLs contain mercury, so yes they should be disposed as the toxic waste they are. There is a good chance the shop just dumps them in their commercial trash and pockets the $5.

I hate CFLs. I had a couple burn up and they didn't last near as long as advertised. Doing mostly LEDs these days (which are almost as bad as e-trash as CFLs but last a lot longer).

I don't think any of my CFLs has burned out since I installed them. Love not changing light bulb nearly as often as I did before. Especially the ones that are high up in the ceiling.

I think the only LEDs I have are a couple nightlights, and they don't burn out either.

Our county landfill takes tubes in their hazmat area. No charge.

I dropped my CFL off at Lowes for free.

Yep, they contain mercury in the powder. If one break your suppose to leave the room until it settles.

It sucks if they just throw it into their trash. If someone says they're going to recycle they should.

Thanks for the info. I try to recycle when necessary. I didn't know about recycling bulbs.

Nobody knows where they can dispose of CFL bulbs and it's often expensive so I imagine most of them just end up in the regular garbage or in a bag under the sink for "future disposal".

LEDs are the way to go now, they're affordable and reliable.

A few special posters on PofA have recycled their CFIs a few times, and sometimes it cost them a lot of money, sometimes it saved them money. Is it like that?

Yep, and they don't have temperature issues in the hangar.
