Memorial day

A whole lot people think this is national BBQ weekend.

Took my seven-year-old to the WWII museum yesterday for the umpteenth time (his request as a reward for stellar grades). He has a very clear concept of the sacrifice of the fallen. Later, we'll all watch a pertinent movie -- maybe Mrs Miniver or a John Wayne vehicle. To those who served, thank you. To the families of the fallen, God bless and keep you.

God bless all the fallen and we say a special prayer for them today. My parents are in Arlington now visiting my brother.

The first time I witnessed my goddaughter Kimberly crying other than as the result of a punishment or a boo-boo was when I explained the Missing Man flyover to her at the Jones Beach Air Show some years back. I'm pretty sure that was also the first time she ever saw her Padrino cry.

God bless the fallen. May they forever rest in peace.

Rich

It bugs me when I hear people say on Memorial Day; "I want to thank all veterans". Memorial Day is to celebrate the supreme sacrifice of our war dead, "Veterans Day" is to celebrate all veterans who served and survive.

May they all rest in peace.

I posted to my FB page a couple of days ago that Sears sent me a Memorial Day Sale for the troops.

Apparently lots of dead people buy stuff at Sears.

As few people who seem to shop at the Sears in the mall near us, maybe dead customers is all they got going for them... kinda like democrat votes in chicago...

Seems a bit self righteous to be this worried about what other people do on Monday.
Do what you want to do and quit worrying about how other people view this day.

Hey don't knock it. They might see dead people.:D

Its not "self righteous" at all. Reminding citizens (who daily receive the benefit) of the sacrifices to our country made by our war dead is the right thing to do. We must never forget them.

Today, we remember those who died defending freedom. Celebrate today with family and friends. Just remember why we are celebrating and educate our children of the meaning behind the holiday.

Being part of the Monday Holiday bill has probably lessened the importance in some folks minds. Maybe it should have been left as May30th as Independence Day was left as July 4th.

I find many folks who cannot seem to distinguish the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran's Day.

Exactly.

Memorial Day is to honor our war dead.

Veterans Day is to honor those who served and are still alive.

I think everyone knows what today is.
I think it's AWESOME to remember, salute, and honor the fallen.

But all the people posting BBQ shaming posts are the equivalent the folks that get their panties in a wad when someone says " happy holidays" vs "merry Christmas" its snarky. If you want to "remind people what today is about", talk to your kids. They are the ones that need to be taught. "Teaching" (read shaming) your peers is just picking a little fight in the name of the fallen.

For those of you who have been brain washed into thinking our military members have died for your freedoms.

Think about this.

There has been no country trying to invade our country or has tried to take away your freedoms since England tried in 1812. Every war, every conflict we have fought has been to free some other nations.
Your freedoms will be attacked and lost from with, in as in the patriot act, and there will be not war to stop it.

That is the new lefty mantra. You got it in one.

As long as you've got your beer, and brats, and the freedom to enjoy them, **** those who died making it possible.

Selfish and ****ty is the new normal from the left these days.

I suppose, if you don't count the Japanese attack on Hawaii in 1942 1941 or the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon in 2001.

Edit: Sorry, finger slipped.

Our freedoms are lost/at risk from our own govt. You know the folks the soldiers answer to and die for. Yeah I'm enjoying the day and the decline from poolside, err pondside at the moment. And before you get crazy with the flag waving please name the last war that increased our freedom?

The last war that increased our freedom? Dude, any war.
The day we become neutral like the Swiss or whatever and not support our like minded allies is the day our freedoms become unimportant.
We are not isolated, my peace loving friend.

That attack was to eliminate our ability to stop them from getting the oil they needed to be a modern industrial nation.

It had nothing to do with taking our freedoms away.

Or the sinking of the Lusitania, the first world trade center bombing, Pan Am flight over Lockerbie, Scotland, USS COLE, you know.... other than all of those things and the other we didn't mention....

How cute. Another whining PROGRESSIVE

When you understand the method that your freedoms were taken away, you'll understand who did it.

Well, that would explain their financials.

It's right up there with the last president of the now-defunct Montgomery Wards who said he was posturing the company to fit the niche between Walmart and Sears.

Another person who doesn't understand history. Pearl Harbor happened for one reason: the Japanese wanted the USA uninvolved militarily and economically while they took over Asia. They'd have been perfectly happy if we declared we intended to stay home and knit after 1931 started the ball rolling.

The Japanese initiated military action to begin their so-called "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere". This plan was to give them access to various sources of raw materials for their industries. Their government was dominated by the military, so they were going to accomplish this by force and needed the United States and other countries to get out of their way. This is why Pearl Harbor was surprise attacked. We went to war to keep basic freedoms in place.

Interesting, I never knew that democrat voters prefer to shop at Sears.

You might want to really read what he wrote. Attacking our country is a whole other deal than invading our country. However I will also point out that Tom is wrong, some of the wars we have fought since 1812 have been waged for reasons other than to free other nations. The Mexican American war, the Indian war and the Spanish American war all resulted in territory gains for the US and we weren't freeing other nations.

The attacks you all point out are the direct result of our foreign policies in the past and actions we took overseas. Action and reaction. Whether or not our policies and actions in the past were right or wrong is a whole other topic. Just pointing out that Tom is correct. No one has tried to invade us since the war of 1812 and likely not to... well other than the current immigration issue, but that's another story too.
