Flying up the coast next few months, suggestions for cool places, restaurants, hotels, etc. would be appreciated!
Also Canadian VFR / IFR gotchas to be aware of.
Thanks!

KRKD - Rockland ME. 250 Main Hotel. Lots of stuff walking distance. Beautiful part of Maine. Owls Head Transportation museum has some very cool cars.

Highly recommend IKI or PWM depending on where you're planning to stop.
PWM has rentals at the FBO ( I usually go to northeast)
IKI the airport manager will arrange rentals with enterprise. We went to Boothbay Harbor a couple of weekends this summer. Stayed a Boothbay Harbor oceanside inn

Put the wheels on the runway at EPM the eastern most airport in the US

The 1st sunday of the month from 9a-11a at Mac jets at PWM they host a coffee with controllers event that's usually pretty good.

The coast of Maine is a beautiful place to fly.

2020 flew up the coast of Maine.
PWM - really enjoyed a few days in Portland, great food and beverage and some neat things to do/see
IWI - We brought bikes with us but if you can figure ground transport red's eats in Wiscasset is worth the wait(even if it's 2 hours. seriously)
RKD - one of the best FBO experiences I've ever had. Neat town of Rockland too. Didn't catch the museum but have heard we need to go back for it.
BHB - we went off season so it wasn't jam packed. Really enjoyed Acadia park.
EPM - really enjoyed the pace here, some good food and neat galleries and such. It's been repaved since we went and I've heard airport manager is working hard to make it a destination airport. Some neat county parks to walk and Raye's mustard :)
We circled over Canada but didn't venture further north.

I'd echo what's been said, coastal Maine is gorgeous to fly.

We did a trip to Bar Harbor and had a great time. Good lobster place literally right outside field. In the pick, you can see the hangars and planes on the ramp in the background.

If you stay in the area, I HIGHLY recommend a stop at the Travelin' Lobster for a Lobster Grilled Cheese Panini.

Machias. Arrange a car rental with Blueberry Ford. Helens on Rt 1, and campobello. It's a nice day outing.
Jsut be CERTAIN that you get it down in early the first half of the runway. it's higher in the middle....e.g downhill both ways.

Young's Lobster Pound, Bucksport, ME.

We recently returned from a week long trip from NH to PEI (CYYG) and Nova Scotia (CYQY). The flight to PEI was very hazy due to the Canadian wildfire smoke, with visibility of about 5-6 miles for most of the trip. It was a bit better for our return flight with ~12-15 mile visibility.

We spent our time in PEI touring the island by car, visiting several lighthouses and beaches. A highlight: the dunes and floating bridge at Greenwich beach.

In N.S., our intention was to do some hikes along the Cabot Trail. Unfortunately, due to the hot and dry conditions, all trails in Nova Scotia were shut down two days before we arrived due to fire risk. We nonetheless enjoyed the scenic coastline on our drive along the Cabot Trail.

The only stop in Maine was to clear customs in Bangor on our return to the US. Unexpectedly good/quick experience with CBP there, even after a bit of confusion with the ground controller sending me to the wrong location.

I do agree that Rockland is great. I actually landed at IWI and drove upt here (we were staying in Booth Bay Harbor because my family was having a reunion there).

You can land at BXM and go to the Taste of Maine. They don't want to hear about when we used to go there in the early 80's and get three one-pound lobsters for $10.

We head out that way tomorrow, I will have to check it out.

First part of the trip: Mount Desert Island.
Sadly, we missed the telephone museum.
The Travelin' Lobster was great.
Hiked Wonderland and Ocean Path to Thunder Hole.
The Oceanarium was cool.

Second part of the trip: Portland.
* Becky's Diner.
* Liberty Ship memorial
* Maine narrow gauge museum

As it turns out, TSA won't let you take a railroad spike in your carry-on luggage.

We had multiple great weekends along the coast when we lived back east. We stayed a couple of days in Nova Scocia. Rented a car and drove all over the island, lots of things to see. One night we stayed at a great B&B in Wolfsville, but I can't find the name of it right now.

Owls Head Museum was a top event for our young boys.

We were visiting friends for a week, they were in Rockport, and we used the museum phone to tell them we were in, and toured the museum as we waited. The museum had so much to see, we went early for our departure, and spent some more time there.

40+ years ago, the admission was cheap for the cars, planes, and historic items they had. We did not mind that we paid twice.
