Safe to joke I guess seeing as how the Sheriff was uninjured -- downright chipper in his TV interview -- and the pilot's injuries were not life-threatening.

There are a lot of control inputs that are counter intuitive to either powered or helicopter pilots when flying gyrocopters. You unload the rotor and you've had it. You do not decrease altitude by shoving the stick forward.
