Didn't know that was still a thing, but absolutely aware. Contrast to the group my grandmother was in, which had some opposite qualities. 1) The plastic that shipped on the living room furniture stayed there. 2) There was at least one room that was for formal use only. 3) The seasonings in the kitchen consisted of salt, fine ground black pepper, and 12 other things that were at least 20 years old and never used. 4) There were alcoholic beverages in the house, which consisted of canned beer and one or more bottles of whiskey, the latter being for whatever uncle "liked to drink". Any wine was labeled "cooking" from the factory, and was probably vinegar.Yes, there is a certain socioeconomenethnic group (hey I invented a word) that 1) converts the master bedroom into a shrine with a table with an array of portraits and figurines of Jesus, 2) puts furniture not intended to be used in the other rooms, and 3) uses the garage as living quarteers.
They had friends in the other group, and would sometimes visit. After, they'd remark on how weird the garage was, how friendly the family was, how good the food was, and how there sure was a lot of wine flying around.
