First, you damage a perfectly good helicopter while trying to land at over 11,000 ft.

Stupid is as stupid does on both accounts. To bad on the sling load someone didn't put a drag chute or even a tree branch on the tail and told el piloto to slow down a bit. May have just made then. :rolleyes:
 
Mixing high density altitude and helicopters is precarious to say the least. You have to stay on your toes, lol!

Yeah, it needed a drogue chute or a helicopter (CH-47) that has a two point hook up. Of course these guys were going way too fast as well.
 
Slung loaded a few things back in the day as a crew chief.

We picked up a huge Cat generator off a lighthouse in SE AK.

A parachute bag was used as the drogue and tore away 1/2 hour into the flight. The generator started rotating 180 deg left and right, which the pucker factor shot up to 11.

We ended lowering our airspeed for the next 1.5 hours. Yes, we considered pickling the load at one point because of our fuel state.

One time in Germany, I was trail in a 4 ship slinging a generator in a Humvee trailer. Thing only weighed 3,500 lbs so it’s light and draggy. Anything above around 60 kts and it was violent. Crew chief kept telling me “slow down sir, this things swinging all over the place!” As if I didn’t know. I could feel it on the controls. So in order to maintain formation integrity, the whole flight flys 60 kts for 80 miles…painful. Then we arrive to the FTX and people start getting brown out 100 ft up with a sling load attached. Talk about pucker factor. ;)

Some of the most gifted long-liners I ever saw were some Canucks flying stripped down Super Pumas with a 200 ft lines moving structures up a mountain side. Similar to your 46 video they were on a 20 minute turnaround and could put the hook in the loadmasters hand and as the guy got off the load they would be pulling pitch over the top and flying off as smooth as silk. Its was as close as you could get to painting art with a helicopter. A close 2nd were some SA315B Lama guys I worked with moving seismic drills in the jungle. Then again nothing like a good SkyCrane guy showing off...
