iPad vs. Nexus 7

The difference between me, and an Apple fanboi, is that I actually owned and used the opposing product for two YEARS before passing judgment.

In other words, my opinion is based on actual experience, not on an infatuation with shiny things. :D

Of course, then you compare a brand-new device against the two-plus-years-old device and proclaim the brand new one the winner. Shocking, who'd have thought technology would improve in a matter of years?

Saw this today and thought that Randall Munroe must have been reading this thread:

True that. This technology is changing so fast that threads like this quickly become meaningless.

Example: My Samsung Galaxy SIII was the best phone in the world back when I started this thread, but its performance has now been supplanted by the new Samsung Galaxy Note II. And there are probably five new phones in the production pipeline that will blow it away.

Tablets have reached the point that PCs reached years ago: AKA: How much faster than "instant" do you need? How much are you willing to pay for incremental, near-meaningless improvements? I now get perfect performance from a used, $300 laptop, so why spend thousands on a new one?

It's the same with tablets. If you can achieve perfect performance for $240, why spend $600?

This is literally like saying your cell phone should have a users account. Tablets are supposed to be a personal device so I fail to see how iOS sucks because it doesn't have user accounts lol.

Use your iPad for your email and Amazon shopping. Now lend it to your kid or a relative.

You don't see the security issue?

Again, I see it no differently than handing my phone to a relative or kid to browse the internet. And I usually don't use the term "security issue" when letting friends or family use my iPad. There are parental controls, as well you don't have to store every password to everything.

The screen of the Nexus 7 is not better than the 9.7in iPad retina display, sorry. Pixel density is lower than the Nexus 7, its simple numbers. Ram is the same, in capacity. But all I have to do is google benchmark tests to see that the Nexus 7 loses to the iPad 4 in every performance perimeter.

Why are you comparing the Nexus 7 to the iPad 4? Would it not be more logical to compare it to the iPad mini?

You're kind of beating a straw pad.

My qualifications: I own: iPad1, Nexus 7, Macbook Pro, HP windows 7 laptop, HP Windows 7 Ultimate desktop.

It would absolutely be more logical to compare the iPad mini to the Nexus 7, Jay was NOT doing that, so I proved him wrong to his post saying the Nexus 7 was better than every iPad when it is clearly not.

Well GOOD for you - happy now?

So.......

I'm an avid Android user. GS3 for my phone and my tablet is the OG Galaxy Tab 10.1. Love both of them, have Garmin Pilot on both of them also. I love love love the new stuff GP has done like the split screen for the 10.1 and how much better it's gotten. I love reading the enroutes on it and approaches, though not a fan of looking down on my lap. Also, I sit all the way forward (182) so there just isn't much room for a kneeboard.. same with the tablet. I've been considering an iPad mini and yoke mounting it. Then again, a Nexus 7 would also fit the mission... so I need some advice... also how is the GP on iPad vs Android? Anyone know? Thanks..

I bought the Ram mount and various bits and pieces, long and short rods, suction and yoke mounts. I can mix and match the parts for just about any airplane that needs it.

The iPad version will match your 10" version. With the 7 you lose weather imagery. Not sure if that's true on mini.

Well, I don't say the iPad is better than the Nexus on opinion. I simply looked up benchmarks which showed which device was better performing.

Yes, it does out-perform the Nexus...on benchmarks....for twice the price. In real-world use there's no difference.

Do benchmarks make it "better"? Maybe, but not if your budget doesn't allow you to have one. In that case, the Nexus 7 is the "better" machine because it's the one you can afford to use.

Hey I am not saying the Nexus 7 isn't great for the money. But it isn't the better machine if you rope them in to comparison with other tablets. Because you can't afford an iPad does not mean the Nexus 7 is better.

Sure love this option! Had to turn that off - ahhhhh much nicer now :yesnod:

Some find the Android OS "better" than iOS, so for them it is "better." You may feel differently, which is what free markets are all about. I have and use both daily. There's no practical advantage of one over the other.

And your book knowledge is trumped by my real world experience with an actual iPad. The Nexus 7 kicked its butt in EVERY parameter -- I'm sorry it wasn't the latest/greatest version of Apple's tablet, but I'm a hotelier, dammit, not a product reviewer. :D

Either way, if you read all the way back to the start of this thread, the single most important factor in choosing the N7 over my IPad was SIZE. The performance improvement, and wonderfully adaptable OS, were icing on the cake -- but it was truly the 7" form factor that carries the day in cockpit usage.

In that regard, the iPad Mini -- Apple's answer to the Nexus 7 -- makes way more sense for spam can pilots like us, IF you're married to ForeFlight. Just be prepared to pay more money for an inferior tablet.

Oh I agree. The software is totally subjective to the needs of the individual. I was only commenting on on the hardware aspect.

I would understand your comparison if it wasn't against an iPad 1. The Nexus 7 is better in every single way with regards to hardware of the iPad 1 for sure. I would hope it would be a better performer.

Because Nexus users want a faster tablet for less money than an iPad mini?

I think the point was that a faster CPU does not automatically equal a faster tablet. This reminds me of the "Megahertz Wars" back in the 90's - Clock speed is and always has been a comparison that is only valid when comparing the same exact CPU. But many PC salesmen back then loved to point out that the Intel chips had faster clocks. They shut up pretty quick when the PowerPC chips used in the Macs at the time got to 300 MHz before Intel got to 200. Thankfully, now that everyone's using Intel that mess has gone away. I got rather sick of explaining it.

I think that the speed of either tablet new is going to be more than acceptable.

Of course, since that will be five weeks to the day since I upgraded to 64G and would have done 128G had it been available!

I have always had 32gb iPads but went for the 64gig when I bought the Mini. The 64 suits my needs finally. I was always having to pick and choose what I wanted on there. Company manuals, aircraft manuals and checklists, plus Foreflight and JeppFD takes about 10gigs alone.

Yep, I have more than enough space at 64G....today. A year from now, who knows? If ForeFlight and Garmin start adding Terrain, SVT, etc., the space could get eaten pretty quickly. Plus I use it as my master repository for training materials I use with my students.

As they say, you can never be too rich, too thin or have too much memory.

Interesting. I was just having this conversation with a guy who was all jazzed about the new 128 GB iPad, and he was incredulous when I told him I still had 9 (of 16) gigabytes free on my Nexus 7?

And that's with every sectional chart on board.

With Cloud storage, there is little need for enormous onboard storage anymore. The only place I can't access the Cloud is in flight -- thus the need to store onboard charts -- but literally everywhere else I go has internet service. The ability to access my data from anywhere, across numerous platforms (smartphone, tablet, PeeCee, laptop) is wonderful -- and I don't need to clog up my devices.

I was on St. Joseph's Island last weekend -- an uninhabited island accessible only by boat -- and had 3G connectivity. I was amazed.

I have about 10gigs of music that I have in the rotation, with about another 22gigs that I don't sync. I like putting movies on there just in case I am stuck somewhere that has no wifi or cell service. Then a bunch of other fun things like games etc. 16 for my first iPad was ok, then 32gb was ok but both I had to kind of pick and choose what I wanted on there. Now I can just sync all my pics, movies, videos, music, then all my aviation stuff and not have to worry about it.
