Interesting . I had that capability on my iPad, and never used it.

With the Nexus 7, if I don't have WiFi handy I tether to my cell phone. Two clicks (one on each device) and I'm good to go...and no separate data plan. :D

All one big data plan for the whole house, here... since that's a function of the carrier. I steal Karen's data all the time since she barely uses it. :)

What's this separate data plan stuff? That's so 2011! ;)

Awesome. I didn't know Foreflight worked on the Nexus, or Wing X pro.

X-Plane mobile would be nice too. How well does that run on the N7?

I have been in areas where the wifi bands were so congested, I could not connect my phone and iPad together, so I had to use the 3G on the iPad.

How well does the N7 work with its 3G connection?

Out of the box, I can wipe my device remotely if it gets stolen. That's good, being I have sensitive information on it. If I lose it, I can remote lock it too, and put a reward message on the screen. How well does Jelly Bean's remote lock/wipe feature work?

Is it as easy to connect the N7 to apple TV? I haven't tried it yet, so not sure.

I have a few virtual reality apps I like to run. One for example, I can use when I climb to the top of the white mountains, to show me the peaks. I target a mountain, hold up the iPad, and it will tell me which peak it is, and the distance to it. I also like Sky Walk For the same reason, but with stars.

Good to know it has a rear facing camera, so it can do the same things. I didn't know that.

I was worried Garage Band would not work on Android, because I use that one a bit as well.

It's so refreshing knowing these things do the same thing. I need to go out and get one now. I mean I was worried that the hundreds of dollars in apps I have for my iPad would be worthless on the N7, but it's comforting knowing that I they just do the same thing.

Two words: Mobile Hotspot

My DROID provides internet access for my iPad AND my Nexus (plus itself) and doesn't cost me a dime more for the benefit on the Verizon sharing plan. Love it!

Yea, but I have the Verizon iPad, and the AT&T iPhone (with hotspot). This allows me to use whatever service has the best reception wherever I am, without having to carry a 3rd device. Not that its a deal breaker for me, but that's just not posable with the N7+Phone.

I have nothing against the N7. It does everything it's advertised to do, and it does it very well.

But that's not remotely the same as saying it can replace every mission the iPad can perform.

If it does what you need it to do, great. But to say "now that it does everything I need, no one should need an iPad" is ridiculous, and that's been Jay's argument all along.
 
I just read somewhere that Asus has announced a version of the Nexus 7 with 4G. I'll stick with my hot spot so I only have one device to upgrade to 5G whenever that arrives. Then my iPad2 will have been used on three generations of wireless data!

And that makes perfect sense. I however, travel a lot, and need internet connections wherever I am, so multiple carrier options is important to me.

This is what I mean by different missions for different people. My technology setup would not be right for you, and yours not right for me.

I could do everything I need to do without an Apple product, but it would be less then optimum, so I chose not to.

Wow! I thought we were talking the capabilities of the two platforms (S3 versus iPhone; Nexus 7 versus iPad), not your individual apps.

I'm sure I could make a similar laundry list of my favorite Android apps that wouldn't run on Apple products, but it's beside the point -- which is simply that the capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy S3/ Nexus 7 combo exceeds the iPhone/(Vaporware) Mini-iPad, and it's available RIGHT NOW.

Better yet, this superior capability is available at an amazing price point that is literally half (or less) what the comparable Apple products will cost.

You do realize, everything I listed, can not be done on the Nexus 7? There might be a 3rd party app that will allow you to remote lock it and/or wipe it, but not as part of the operating system (a much more robust solution).

The Apps I mention are functionality. I can use my iPad to point it at a star, and the screen circle it and tell me what it is. That's functionality I would lose, regardless of any apps. No one could put that app on a Nexus 7, because the hardware won't support it.

Someone could make a music app as full featured as Garage Band, but no one has. Thus if you want the functionality it provides, you need an iPad.

You need to get out more. Google Sky Map does the whole sky/star/planet/constellation thing, beautifully -- and it's free. Dunno about Garage Band, but I've got all of my music -- thousands of songs -- stored in the Cloud, available seamlessly from all my devices.

For every functionality the iPad boasts, I'm sure there is an Android equivalent -- and vice versa.

But that's beside the point. The latest great news is I just downloaded Garmin Pilot onto my S3 phone, and it recognized my chart subscriptions. Apparently Garmin allows multiple devices on a single subscription, which rocks!

Garage Band has nothing to do with your music collection (and there is no Android Equivalent).

This is where you now say "ok, I get it, there are some things if you want to do, you need an iPad to do them well", as opposed to just blindly supporting the thing that does what you want to do well, and discreading everyone else's needs.

Why is that so hard for you? You just hate to admit your wrong, or you hate Apple that much?

I'm not who you're replying to, of course....

But my wife loves her Apple I-pad. I like my Apple I-phone.
Yet that I-pad you're showing, is sure a big behemoth to haul aboard a
small plane, considering it gets too visually washed out, to use as a panel mount. The Nexus 7 IS the perfect size, since we're talking GA cockpits here.

Us "core-heads" understand that it's not all about the features, it's about usability. I heard the same argument back when the iPhone was first introduced. In fact, EdFred said it here: "My phone already does everything the iPhone will do!" And when I thought about it, technically my Sony Ericsson phone did, too - But even though I'd specifically bought the S-E phone for some of those features, I didn't use them because it was a pain in the ass. The iPhone made things very easy, so now I use those features.

Apple has an excellent track record when it comes to usability, which is why people get excited about the features when Apple introduces them. Apple doesn't introduce a feature just so they can check a box and say they have the feature, they introduce features when they can be done right. Some of us have an appreciation for that.

Yawn... ForeFlight has been doing the same ever since the iPad came out.

Of course, I'll give Garmin some points for actually doing that, since their subscriptions in the past have been stupid expensive - It's about time they caught up with the real world.

I get that. That's not the debate. My position, is there are times the Nexus 7 is a better tool for what you want to do, and there are times that the iPad is a better tool for what you want to do.

Jay's position is the Nexus 7 is capable of replacing the iPad for everything anyone would ever want an iPad for, so anyone who still uses/promotes them for any reason, must just be an uneducated fanboy.

There is no doubt in anyones mind other then Jay's, that he is incorrect. The struggle is convincing him of that.

I can't tell if he really knows that, but thinks it's fun to just stir the pot, or his is just incapable of seeing it.

Um, the star finder app doesn't utilize a camera, which the Nexus 7 does have, BTW -- but whatever. I'm glad you enjoy Apple products. I have used both Apple and Android for over two years, and have been much happier with Droid, but YMMV.

This post stands in stark absurdity, since over 200(?) posts ago I clearly stated that I sold my iPad after a week with the Nexus 7. Obviously the N7 does everything I was using my iPad for, and more.

I'm glad you've found a software justification for your iPad, where I could not. Garage Band sounds essential to you, and there's nothing wrong with that.

In fact, because of its convenient size (it fits nicely in the cargo pockets of my shorts) I use the N7 for far MORE than i did with the iPad, not because it's better hardware but because it's just plain handier to carry. It has truly become ubiquitous, and all three of us use ours incessantly.

On the Apple vs. Everybody else front....completely underwhelmed by iPhone 5...had hoped for at least as big a screen as what I've had the last two years. I guess I'll go pick up that Razr Maxx now. Bummer. I was holding out hope for a real blockbuster. That's back to back yawners for Apple in the phone market.

You hold the iPad up to the sky, and the camera on the back displays the stars on the screen. The app then identifies each star.

It uses the back facing camera, and the Nexus 7 doesn't have one.

Wow, how is it you are parroting back what I just said, yet when I say it it's a stark absurdity? I never once said the Nexus is not the best tablet for you. In all these posts, I never once even implied it.

This will be my last attempt to see if you get what I am saying. This time I will use an senario, and ask your opinion...


So your sitting down there at your hotel in Texas, and one of your guests walks by and sees you using your Nexus tablet. They stop and ask you "Hey, I see you have a tablet. I was wondering if you can recommend one for me based on my needs?" You say "Sure, what do you plan to do with it?" He say's "Well, I live in NYC, and I have to take a train an hour each way to work. I am an avid amateur musician, and I have a small studio I play in. I would like to use those two hours a day to record music, but I obviously can't take my instruments with me on the train. So I need one with virtual instruments. It also needs a screen big enough to play it with most of my fingers, as some of the instruments might warrant it. What would you think is the best tablet for my needs?"

My question, is what will you tell him?

Well, they will sell 5 million of them in the first week, so someone likes them.

It's around 20% lighter, 20% thiner, and has a 4 inch screen that's most likely the best in the industry (because the touch sensors are now built in, and not on top). It has longer battery life, an improved camera front and back, twice as fast as the already snappy 4s, with better graphics, a better connector (there is no front and back) and LTE.

Not much didn't change. What would you need to have seen to not be underwhelmed?

The Google starfinder app uses GPS and the accelerometer to do the same thing. Point it at the sky (or even the ground) and it shows which celestial body you're pointed at. It works great.

I didn't say they wouldn't sell. If Steve Jobs dropped a turd on the street I have no doubt that there are at least five million fanboys who'd have picked it up and sing its praises.

Main thing I wanted was a screen at least as big as my two year old Droid X. An industry-standard connector would have been nice, but I recognize Apple doesn't care much about that.

Such is life.

That's what I thought. When given a senario where the overwhelmingly obvious choice is the iPad, you can't make that recommendation.

Like it or hate it, the width of the iPhone is chosen, because Apple feels it's the best size for a screen. They have stated in the past, that the reason they don't make the phone wider, is because they want the average size hand to be able to hold it normally, and reach every key with there thumb. This is why they went vertical.

I guess it's just personal tastes. For me, I would like my phone to be smaller. If they made two of them, and one was half the size, I would buy the smaller one.


I would like to have had an industry standard cable. However for my personal needs, I think it would be pointless. I would still need a cable, and I have nothing else I need to charge. Just an iPad and an iPhone.

If I has a camera, or memory card reader (I have one, but the cable is built in), or something else that needed me to carry a USB cable, I would care more.

Yet another example: Today the internet is all a-Twitter about a "new" app called Apple Maps on the iPhone5 because it will actually give you turn-by-turn GPS driving instructions -- a capability that Android phones have had for YEARS.

This isn't a small thing. I used that feature literally daily for years after we moved to Texas in 2010. I am using it in Reno right now. For Apple to be so far behind is appalling.

I've read everything I can find about the "new" iPhone, and it appears to be inferior in every way to the S3 in my pocket. I just watched a review of it on cable in my hotel room, and the roundtable consensus was "not worth it". Uh oh.

But you fanbois have fun with your new toys. I'm sure the Core has 5 million presold by now. lol!

Everyone has their preferences. I replaced my original Droid with a Razr Maxx earlier this year. Love it. The battery life is tremendous. I don't know how it compares with any iPhone as I haven't used them. Not to say they're bad, just that I haven't made the switch and am not likely to for some time. Something about a 2 year contract... :D
