iOS 8.4 is out

I'm not a Spotify user so I can't say. Apple Music allows me to listen to complete albums or individual songs that I don't own and select to save them for offline listening. I'm limiting the loads to wifi but the offline access works perfectly once they're loaded. The albums load quickly and are added to my iTunes music library. I'll play with using cell data to see if it's comparable to Pandora or other streaming services but the downloads may take more data. Since my purchased music is 100% downloaded? I don't need to purchase music anymore. I may be behind the times by not using Spotify but I'm impressed with Apple's offering.

I dint bring it up asswipe, you did. If you don't know the TE of our technology, look it the **** up.

Nice way to have an intelligent conversation, calling people names.

I brought up nothing, you are the one that said Apple annoyed you, not I. Just look back up the posts in this thread.

And you were the one that asserted the inefficiencies, I asked, in light of your record, for a citation.

Don't be such a lying duchebag, you don't want an intelligent conversation about anything, you want to be an ******* to me, so **** off.

Well that escalated quickly.

Anyway, as a wifi only iPad user this is good news finally.

Yes, I agree. I'll still wait before the upgrade, just a little, to see what they broke this time though.

I watched a guy get his hung up on an O2 bottle rack as it got crane lifted off the deck with him out of the view of the operator. He was 20' off the deck before I could get to our PA mic when his finger let loose and he hit the deck (luckily the crane hadn't swung over the side yet as we were both jacked up over 100' above the water and the receiving crew boat below). He was back the next hitch minus his left ring finger.:(
Ouch. That hurts just thinking about it.

I believe Neil Armstrong lost his ring finger jumping out of his pickup truck. I don't suppose he had his ring on when he jumped off the LEM.

I've never been an Apple person but recently bought an iPad Air 2 specifically for aviation use. It's been a bit of a struggle trying to learn how to do everything Steve's way but as noted Google is not much better. My Old Droid Razr finally gave up the ghost in nav mode trying to guide me around metro DC last week so I upgraded to a new Droid Turbo. Simple things such as my contacts list were so significantly changed that I felt like I might need to go to night classes for a week to figure out how to use it. They seem to like completely reinventing the wheel every three months so just about the time you've finally got it figured out it changes.

Of course I'm old, young people don't seem to have these problems but honestly I don't see what was wrong with the way it was before.

One thing about the iPad I've noticed is that everyone seems to have license to completely gouge you for accessories. I bought a "My Clip" to turn it into a knee board and although it's a nice and elegantly simple device I couldn't help but wonder how they got thirty four bucks from me for an elastic strap with a couple of rubber clips.

The finger I carried to the ER was the same situation. Guy jumps off the back of a truck, I happen to be walking by and witness it. I didnt realize what was going on but he ran off and someone was there staring and pointing but kinda frozen. I looked and it was the finger.

We were at a hospital already, and it was snowy. I grabbed the finger, packed it in snow and followed the blood trail. Last i heard it wasnt saved. too much nerve damage.

Google vs apple? Well they both work. Some people just want a package that is polished and not much room for play and to screw around with, that has a set way of doing things and thats it. Others dont mind tinkering a bit or want the ability to modify things.

When I was in my 20s I used to run mostly custom linux machines at home with a whole network of servers and what not just to play with and just because. I would build computers, spend hours coding etc. Even on the windows machines. Now, I just dont want to mess around with anything. So I go with mac/ipad/iphone. I pay a premium for a package that is exactly what it is. I dont mess with crap and even if I wanted to, it would be more difficult. I'm happy with that. Neither choice is wrong. They all have their pluses and minuses.

Accessories are kinda like when I bought my BMW. Just because it has that name, the price doubles. I eventually got tired of doing my own maintenance and it still costing more than a normal car, so I sold and got a new Mazda 6 which has even more accessories, more comfortable and almost as smooth a ride.

On-wrist notifications without pulling out your phone is the main reason.
Too much effort required to pull out the phone? As a country, we have become very lazy. And brainwashed by advertising and by the "trends". We've become a bunch of followers. Just because some shmuck on your block has an Iphone doesn't mean that you should rush out and buy one (usually on credit). This kind of unnecessary, wasteful personal spending is killing our society.

The worst part is that a lot of the people buying all this crap are ones who really can't afford it. I have a neighbor in my building that is on food stamps, yet just bought her 12 year old daughter Samsung S5 or 6. Almost unbelievable.

Actually it's a little different for Apple. They've protected (either patent or trade secret) all of the protocols and technology related to the phone. You want to build something that uses the ports? You need a license from Apple. And that costs significant money per copy (and must meet certain guidelines, just like apps).

As for third-party stuff like kneeboards, folks get what they can for them. There is a pricing philosophy that says "more expensive items, people will pay more".

And here we go.....

When you buy an iDevice (or just about any device) you are really leasing it for 2 years. After that, you'll need another one if you want to stay up to date.

Mentally accept that when purchasing and it gets easier.

This is why I refuse to buy an apple watch. It's priced more than I would normally pay for a watch and it's useful lifetime is _far_ less.

I still don't "get" the iWatch. My $24 timex (with hands and backlight) does everything I expect or want from a timekeeping & display device.

Same here. Plus it take a lot of abuse and I don't need to be careful with it.

It constantly amazes me what people on this board get in heated arguments about. :rolleyes2: Got a question that was easily and fully answered in the first reply? Yep this board will find a way to fight about something. Pilots. :D

SO PEOPLE... what's the verdict on iOS 8.4? I'm waiting to install it because I have a long XC next week and I don't want to introduce any new show-stopper bugs (the GPS one didn't affect me) - are there any major new flaws in 8.4 that would be significant to flying or is it pretty benign as far as pilot-related stuff?

Seems to work fine for me on phone and ipad

It amazes me that some guys don't read threads and ask what's already been answered. :)

8.4 is working great. Mostly because of the added features already discussed. As for my flight apps 8.3 wasn't a problem for me so 8.4 isn't a solution.

I tried reading this thread and found a bunch if ******* pilots arguing about nonsense. I didn't see any useful PIREPs on 8.4, just a bunch of guys hating on any of the following: apple watch, apple, today's society, etc...

Maybe this thread has run its course then.

Just downloaded it on my iPhone 6 and Ipad 2. I've noticed my Ipad 2 has been running slow even before the update. I think it was iOS 8 that screwed everything up.

8.4 fixed the problem FB built in the other day that made it slow as crap. Nice that FB released the update to ply with 8.4 before Apple released 8.4.:rolleyes2:

oh, I dunno. my wife's iPhone 4S, my iPhone 5 and original iPad mini are still purring just fine.

They work, but if you want the "latest" and are "into" technology, the 2 year lifespan probably applies.

Typically I buy every other iPad / iPhone released on the first day it's available. I skip every other generation. That way, I stay reasonably up to date...

I don't know how the latest iOS changes affect older phones but I do recall the reason I switched from an iPhone 4 to a 5 to a 6 was because the hardware wasn't up to the task of using the newer operating systems. I presume that explains why some guys think iOS 8 slowed things down. It hasn't slowed my things down. I, too, keep my hardware current and that's the primary reason.

Last night I sorted through my airplane survival pack and came across my old Garmin eTrex Summit. The software date was 2000. That little GPS isn't worth putting new batteries in. it's so outdated the only thing to do was toss it. I remember when it was the coolest thing going. The speed of technology is amazing.

Funny you should call someone a liar, considering some recent posts...

How about this cite for the variety of light bulbs?

I believe he started about the generation of energy, which somehow has to do with apple annoying him.

Funny you should....

You know, as close as you have your nose in my ass you must want to rim me really bad. Come on and get some, I'll even let you lick a little turtle. Now what part of "**** off you douchebag" are you failing to comprehend?

probably true but I don't need/want "the latest". I spent a career "breaking trail" and don't relish doing that anymore. I'm still using Win7 and will be until MS proclaims it dead. i'll likely be trading in the 4S later this year for a 6.

Post junk, expect to be questioned about it.

Has anyone else had an issue with the INTERNAL GPS after upgrading to 8.4? Waze and google maps started acting very erratically on my iPhone 6, and there's lots of buzz about this new problem online. I use an external GPS (GDL39-3D), so hopefully this won't affect me while flying.

Someone on the red board reported that "iOS 8.x turned a reasonably functioning iPad 2 into a near brick in one update." I use my three-year-old iPad 2 (still on iOS7) for Foreflight and everything else under the sun. Everything is backed up elsewhere, of course, but it would be a hassle if it no longer worked as well as it does now.

In light of this new info, I'll just stay with iOS7 until the important apps no longer support it. I'll miss new features in some apps, maybe, but they'd be worthless anyway if the thing bricks.

I used Maps and Google Maps a couple of times since on the 6+ with no problems.:dunno:

I'm new to Apple so I'm wondering, if you upgraded to 8.3 and had an issue would there be any way to go back to 8.2? I know that in Windows you can go back to a restore point.

 At least I can change my avatar...

Douchebag is generally the spelling btw. Just observations, nothing to get upset about.

I upped to ios7 on my iPhone 4 and it runs as fast as molasses. I don't think ios8 is even available for mine

Generally, no. That's what caught a lot of people with the GPS issue. They couldn't go back to a version that did work with their GPS.

Reminds me of the classic exchange...

Braddock: "Winston, you are drunk, and what's more you are disgustingly drunk."

Churchill: "Bessie, my dear, you are ugly, and what's more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly."
