Inadvertant IMC in the Mountains = BAD Idea!

Care to prove my point any further Scott? A couple more times would really help boost that average daily post count.

Wow, this thread descended quickly.

Ooh - but at least there's no cattle in the clouds.

"What is that goat doing up here?

I always thought that was a cartoon, something we laughed at for its ridiculousness. :(

Isn't it the pot calling the kettle black? That cartoon is opposite of that.

File this under: "It's incorrect to say 'should of'".

So -- what explanation could there be on this pilot's part? Is he not IFR rated? Was there a 3 hour wait for a clearance release?

He could have filed a composite flight plan if he wanted to do the formation for a while before continuing on IFR...

I don't get why he would choose to continue on IMC when it's really not that hard to pick up a clearance once airborne...

:dunno:

I thought that on first glance, but on second inspection I realized that the cartoon was correct.

One more advantage of a high wing over a low wing. When close to the ground the wing is still farther away.

Stupid is still stupid...:yesnod:

Glad this guy didn't kill any innocent passengers...

Well, he was flying a Bonanza...

Is it the pilot who posted it? I got the impression it was one of the passengers, or a third party.
You're right, I watched the video again. I also took a look at the pilot and the airplane and I'm still guessing #1. Call me a cynic.

Re: Close Call Video...A Little Too Close

Stupid is as stupid does. Unbelievable.

Re: Anybody following this? Oops!

Runway lights are not blue, Mine are all white or white on one side and orange on the other depending on how far your are from the end of the runway. Arkansas is still in America I think.

He was joking.

Re: Anybody following this? Oops!

I can't wait to read the cockpit transcript. At what point did they realize what they had done?? I assume they'd have gone around if they figured it out more than a few feet off the pavement.

That could have been VERY ugly.

Jeez... Words fail me...

How could it be an incursion? He never crossed the hold short line!

Re: Close Call Video...A Little Too Close

You can actually see the Garmin 696 giving them a terrain warning, in the lower left hand screen.

Thye FAA has been notified and an investigation has begun.

There was a post in You Tube that goes like this;

If you want to see how this would have turned out but for the grace of God, Google this...

LAX99FA077

Read the full narrative. This incident changed the lives many more people than just those in the plane.

Here is the narrative.

Just as an EXPLICIT FYI, this topic has already been discussed in the "Lessons Learned" forum.

Re: VFR into IMC

I kinda figured it had been, then I thought, what if it hadn't? POA would have missed out on this highly educational video, possibly going so far as to save someones life, or even saving an airplane. Under the heavy weight of all this indecision, I decided to risk humiliation, in order to advance our never ending quest, for ways to avoid bending our airplanes.

Thanks Tim! I even searched stupid pilots! This one didn't pop up!

Moderators dudes & dudettes! I hate duplicate threads. Please delete this thread or move to the appropriate thread. Thanks!

Re: Anybody following this? Oops!

Landing on Taxiway "Alpha" was / is a common event at Lincoln, NE KLNK. So much so they renamed the runway from 17L-35L & 17R-35R to 17-35 & 18-36. That didn't help much so they added "non-standard markings" to Taxiway "A". They took a bucket of yellow paint and poured a squiggly line down the center of the taxi way.....(well that is what it looks like!), but we STILL have commercial & private pilots landing on the taxiway. Now the tower guys watch more closely to make sure they are lined up on the runway, but just a month or two ago someone else did it.
I'm pretty sure all the construction they've been doing on 35 and Alpha are to help with that problem. I'm not sure exactly what they're doing though other than being an inconvenience right now :)

Sad, but the correlation is all too true... :frown3:
No, it really isn't. People with more money for nicer planes aren't better off because they're stupid.

It does go to show that intelligence doesn't have much to do with being a safe pilot, however.

Is there a correlation between smart and wealthy?

Paris Hilton?

There are some that simply want to be listed in the NTSB chronicles....

"So, son, what do you want to be when you grow up?"

"I want to be in an NTSB report, then everyone will know who I am!"

Modern parenting. :mad2:

Haha, but if you look at the pilot he is easily into his 50s or more. Just goes to show you that age isn't necessarily a factor.
