I finally after 35 years decided what I want to do when I grow up. So what's the next step? Do they have internet on the carriers?

35 years ? I'm sorry to have to tell you that you've missed the boat. If you work hard you could however buy yourself an L-39.

The fun of fighters is in the Gs - go take a ride in an Extra or Pitts.

...ummm, and the cool helmets and guns!

Hahaha - I've always wanted to fire the gun in an A-10. Gives me a boner just thinking about it!

Join CAP and you can cosplay a fighter pilot.

Not quite the same thing but I really got a thrill when I was in the Army and got to shoot a M-60 from a Huey. Luckily, it was on a range and not in a combat zone with unfriendlies shooting back.

Has the concept of oversharing ever been presented to you?

Okay, I'm sorry if I somehow offended you. It was a joke. Maybe I should have put a bunch of smileys next to it? There's far worse all over PoA. This is the internet. Loosen up.

I will not except you're version of reality. I was taught my whole life I can be anything I want even president.

You are obviously younger than I. When I ran into an M-60 it was the main battle tank and we drove them. The M-1 was still just somebody's dream.

Or are you referring to the M-60 MG? Never shot one from a Huey, but we did play with them at ROTC summer camp at Ft. Lewis. Great fun. Almost as much fun as an M-2 blasting away at 55 gallon drums a quarter mile away. :D

Gunnery at night, with the cockpit doors off, muzzle percussion 4 ft from your head, laser on target, muzzle flash lighting up the cockpit and tracers ricocheting all over. It's like the 4th of July only in shades of green. Of course the M-60 no longer does the deed. M-240 replaced it a while ago.

The first time I fired the M230 30mm on the Apache I told my IP I wanted to transfer the controls to my boner... I know your feeling!

Yep. I was a 60 gunner myself. I liked the 240 but the problem with it was that at least the early ones had way to high of a cyclic rate of fire for ground ops. 550 RPM out of an M60 is controllable from the shoulder or hip, 1000 rpm is not. At least not in a 7.62 mm class machine gun.

Now, the M249 SAW, that was a sweet little weapon. It's like having a garden hose, but streaming 5.56 mm bullets.

I'm a mere child of 57. I have no idea how old you are.

I of course was referring to the machine gun.

All great unless you are on the surface and downrange of the tracers.

BTDT. The sound of rounds ricocheting off the water is not so cool when the tracers are coming at you....

Yeah sure seemed like the 240 wasn't as reliable as it was suppose to be. Had jams on almost every flight. Then again i believe we had some maintenance / proper care issues as well.

Fired the SAW in the Marines a few times as well. It is a sweet weapon.

I always preferred the M60s to the M2s. M2 packs a punch, but we were constantly clearing jams on the M2s when I was on the PC. I can honestly say I never had an M60 jam on me.

Ok, that's fine. Now go down to the Armed Forces Recruiting office and see if you like their version of reality any better.

I've never had an issue with the reliability of the 240, but then again mine was new and I didn't have a lot of experience with it. I've seen (and had) jams in the 60 before, but normally most were first shot jams caused by newbs that failed to put a leading link on the first round of the belt.

I was on my Division's M60 marksmanship team for a year. Every other freee weekend was spent at Wildflecken or Grafenvoer burning up ammo on the range. I placed very well.

Yes, the leading link was the first thing I was taught with the M60.

I never got to shoot a 240 unfortunately.

It might be good to chose your teachers with more care, as it sounds like you were misinformed. . . I don't think you can be a kangaroo or a hula-hoop, for example

But yes, you can fly "fighter jets" (not a cool term, I'm just sayin').

Several commercial outfits will strap you into a variety of fighter aircraft for a fee, and you get to fly it. . .

I recommend the L-39 highly; if $$$ limited, the SF-260 is a real hoot to fly, as well. Google Air Combat, War Bird Training, etc., and you'll find some places to shop.

Well, that would likely be the route you need to take to get a seat in a US military fighter at this point.

Lol! Graf / Hohenfels in the winter. I get shivers just thinking about it.

I only know of one person who tried this in later life. He bought into an L39 and attended a school on it. Later while buzzing his home field he stalled it after a buzz job , plunged into a backyard backwards and blew up. He was not trained in the military but was a decent pilot in his fiftys.

It's funny everyone keeps saying the L39 that's what brought this whole thing about. I had some time to kill at the hanger and picked up a copy of warbirds. Getting an opportunity to go up in one is definitely on my bucket list!

Names of places that bring back memories of deep sticky mud, cold and the smell of cordite. Gunner sabot tank!

 Mud that will swallow your rubber MOPP boot in a heart beat. Mud that freezes on the floor of your GP tent because no one wants to go refuel the heater in the middle of the night.:D
