I shot the president!

Fake. I don’t see any GA aircraft violating the TFR.

When Clinton was President and he flew into our airfield I had to move everyone of our parked and chained down Apaches so the 30 mm Cannon could not be oriented towards AF-1...probably the stupidest thing I ever made my troops do...I had protested but secret service was more than insistent...actually I had a real case of the ass and not sure why I did not end up in jail...was not worth ending my career over in the end.

I took a swing at the FAA administrator once, but she ducked.

Had Bush Jr fly into Miramar and all the MPs had their bullets taken away, promptly returned after his motorcade left base for downtown San Diego.

The USSS is truly scared of their own shadow.....

and the Inspector General.

I find our government leaders and their underling's fear of the US military on US soil to be rather disturbing. Maybe they know that the troops have every reason to hate them? I'm just surprised that the military hierarchy would kowtow to the secret service. But I guess their respective chain of commands merge on Pennsylvania Avenue.

I was based at NAF Andrews for decade and the insanity of the secret service knows no bounds. "Risk Management" might as well be written in martian. It's really hard to respect them just because of that paranoia and disrespect they give to everyone else defending the country despite some very committed agents.

I think the SS just like flexing their muscle also. Had Atlanta approach trying to keep me out of the core with a patient on board one day. I was just getting ready to tell him that I wasn’t going to stay on the vector when he gave me direct the hospital. Landed simultaneously with AF1 on final for ATL. Found out a couple days later it was “amateur day” in the radar room and the SS agent seemed confused about standard procedure.

And yet no President has been harmed since Reagan. Seems like maybe they have something right. Losing a President, even one you hate, would be catastrophic to us.

I respectfully disagree on the catastrophic part. We have clear documentation as to who will take their place. It has happened before in this country.

Hardly catastrophic. We have endured the deaths of eight sitting presidents, four by assassination and four by natural causes. The nation has endured and done so remarkably well. We have a firm order of succession and a robust system of checks and balances. No one person is so critical to the welfare of this nation as for his death to cause its demise.

Okay, maybe you guys don't like the word 'catastrophic' but it would impact our economy and would not be good for the country overall. Can you imagine the people who would blame the Clintons? :)

Yes it would impact our economy. But what’s catastrophic about the stock market going up?

When George W visited Stockton, California, it was a huge spectacle. Two weeks in advance they created this massive physical barrier around the Hilton on March Lane with metal shipping contains stacked three high. On the day of his arrival, the street was flooded with secret service agents, and two separate motorcades arrived from Sacramento a couple of hours apart. He left the next day, again, in one of two motorcades spaced a couple hours apart.

You never really saw him or heard from him during the period of visit, and the shipping containers stayed for a couple months, still probably being paid for by the Federal government.

The visit was completely pointless. (And if it wasn't, why didn't they just fly him in and out same day?)

Most POTUS visits are pretty much pointless to anyone but their rabid supporters. And this goes for ones from both parties lest I be accused of being political again.

I made it perhaps 20 yards or so (my memory is foggy) onto the taxiway when, by the grace of God and all things holy, I became aware of the MD-11 that was taxiing toward me (in hindsight it should have been obvious that the oncoming traffic had only cleared because of this very plane). I was very fortunate to have come to my senses when I did, though the pilot had also seen me (he was far off enough to still have a viewing angle from the cockpit) and came to a stop shortly after I did. I was at least slightly beyond the plane’s wingspan, so I think I might have been safe if I had stayed where I was, but I was terrified (both for my life and because I though the airport police would descend upon

Agreed. It would be awful to lose any president, whomever they are, to assassination for lots of reasons. However, that's the reason the lines of succession were built. They are not Kings or Emperors serving for life, they are citizens chosen to lead for a maximum of 8 years (ok, plus some maybe) and rarely are they the only viable candidate in that pool. Heck the VP is chosen on his similarity to the presidents views and vision.

Because that just enables rich people stealing from poor people.

I was once at an airport I grew up at, Perry Lefors Field in Pampa, TX. I had flown in to visit my parents and as I was walking around the ramp, I saw these two guys in dark suits watching me. Now if you've ever been to Pampa, or really anywhere in the Texas Panhandle, you know you rarely see guys in suits. The funeral directors wear them, sometimes the preacher, but even when attending a funeral, most will see jeans and maybe a clean shirt.

Everywhere I would walk, these guys would move to where they could watch me. I eventually had enough and headed toward them and they got into their Suburban and left before I could get to them.

Two days later my Mom called me to tell me Cheney had flown in the day after I left to go hunting with T. Boone Pickens. I guess they were just scoping out the airport.

If you knew some of the people that joined the military that I do, you would be afraid too. Crazier the better when it comes to combat, not so when it comes to political officials.

For the record, I didn't say the US would dry up and blow away. I didn't say we would immediately be attacked and destroyed. I only said it would be catastrophic.

Catastrophic definition: 'involving or causing sudden great damage or suffering' or 'extremely unfortunate or unsuccessful'. From now on I will use words like 'bad' or 'very sad'.

Excessively monosyllabic is far superior.

Perhaps, at one time. Now, I think the VP candidate is chosen to lock in votes you might not get with another choice. Would Obama have won without an old white gentleman by his side, a person that more closely fit the demographic of 43 previous presidents?
