Wondering if azblackbird knows (is??) benpilot.
I've stayed out of the earlier controversies, but I need to question this one... 1500 a day?? Even if possible I will be the first one to say unsafe.I hear ya... I caught the same flack years ago when I was touring the country on my GoldWing. The PG crowd on one of the GW boards I frequented, deemed that if you rode your GoldWing over 100 miles in a day, that you were a very dangerous and careless rider. They really crapped their pants when I posted some of my IronButt rides (1000-1500 miles in a day). You'd swear by their snide and obtrusive remarks, that I murdered and raped all the women, and beat all the young children wherever I rode.
Every board has a PG... but whatta ya gonna do? They can try and scare you off (as several here have been) or you can play their silly little games.
I like silly games...

Even if riding at 80 mph, that is 19 hours of riding.
No.
Ben was real. I knew him in person. Well, at least he believed what he said wholeheartedly (his interpretation of the various situations was .... off).
I haven't seen him in a couple of years, but he really did believe the examiner had it in for him and used his logbook as an "excuse" to fail him. It wasn't an excuse; it was illegible.
This guy is obviously making it up.
I'd never heard that about benpilot. Did he ever get his license and buy a plane?

Even if riding at 80 mph, that is 19 hours of riding. Obviously you need to stop for food, gas, take a leak... that brings you close to 24 hours of riding at 80 mph.
Where's that flag I'm looking for?? It's yellow, and raises to reveal a BS.

'm also a business owner (internet/advertising) who is launching a new start-up that will allow me to travel the country in an airplane and conduct business. Once again, the PG crowd here crapped their pants telling me I can't conduct business as a private pilot,
Riding 24 hours is unsafe. Regardless of what anyone says. Now I feel I must chime in! I'm not saying the op has ever completed a true long distance ride, but I will vouch that those types of rides are done often and done safely by members of the ld (long distance, not learning disabled) motorcycling community.
My IBA # is 409. My wife and I rode to a gold medal finish in the 2011 Iron Butt Rally (I drove, she rode). Our route started in Seattle and we hit the farthest four corners of the contiguous U.S.(Blaine, WA; Madawaska, ME; Key West, Fl; and San Ysidro, CA), all 48 states, and most of the state capitals before stopping in Ontario, CA. We covered 11,587 miles in less than 11 days. And, yes, it was on a Goldwing.
This was one of many rallies we competed in and we frequently rode 1,000 plus mile days. On my way to the start of a rally, I once rode over 1,300 miles riding only during the daylight hours. I have only ridden over 1,500 miles in a 24 hour period once, however. If you research these types of riders and rides you will find the accident per mile for dedicated ld riders is well below the national average.
I had no real reason for doing it.
I loved it. I still do love it. I don't know why.
Same thing with flying.
And your dismissing it as impossible or unsafe is the same type of crap I hear from non-flyers about how silly I am for flying.
ML
Who are you talking to.....??Flying a plane is unsafe, regardless what anyone says.
You, sir, are ignorant.
ML
I guess...And, apparently, slow witted.

@MikeLima ... congrats on the 4-Corners, you're definitely in an elite group. That's some heavy duty riding. You have my respect! My IBA # is 409. Comprehend much? Do you know what a "scenario" is?... I didn't think so. Lawdy, lawdy, some of you guys are thick.Stretch the truth much? What happened was you said "Another scenario would be that I'm a businessman with clients in various cities and wish to drop off an updated part to their widget they previously purchased from me." You CANNOT do that with a PPL. It has nothing to do with 'conducting business' and everything to do with carrying cargo.
Sounds like you're speaking from experience. No thank you.Can you ride a GW and still consider that 'Iron Butt' anything? That's like cursing in a BarcaLounger... get a Ducati SuperSport and ride that for a few hundred miles... you feel like you just had some bad prison/Boy Scout expierence when you're done.

In your case you summed it up perfectly! Thank you for playing. So, pointing out that the scenario you listed is illegal, makes US thick? And arguing for pages that it's not, because some magical accountant and attorney said it wasn't, now means that you knew all along it was illegal; we're just clowns too stupid to read your posts.
why are you still here? Seriously. In your case you summed it up perfectly! Thank you for playing.
Believe it or not, there is some actual learning to be had here. That is if you're willing to wear your waders.why are you still here? Seriously.

1000's of private pilot business owners across the country do this (or something similar) each and every day. You're exactly right... the FAA doesn't give a rat's ass as long as it's your own personal business matters, and you're not flying cargo or passengers for hire or compensation from other businesses. It's not that hard to understand.Yeah, you can, actually. No law of physics to prevent it, and not much chance the Feds could prove your intent, or would care enough to bother. Might or might not break a rule. . .you probably meant SHOULD NOT?
Real world - throw widget in back seat; fly to client, smile, shake hands, talk sports/golf/business. Talk some more business. Hand customer/client the widget, fly home.
Not "illegal", as in criminal. Might break a FAA rule, might not, and it's irrelevant anyway, and FAA doesn't give a rats butt, if a PP happens to bring a widget along on a flight, as long as the PP isn't running a clandestine airborne package delivery service. . .
In before thread lock!
For what? Sticking up for myself and not letting the PG crowd run me off like I've seen them do to so many others.Nah, I predict a ban.

Do you have a landing calculator yet? They are essential to your training. I would highly suggest getting the metal one. You are going to use it so much that the paper and plastic ones just don't hold up.For what? Sticking up for myself and not letting the PG crowd run me off like I've seen them do to so many others.
I spent a good week before I signed up reading tons and tons of threads here (I'm still not finished) trying to digest and pick out those little tidbits that I think would be helpful in my ppl and instrument training. I found many threads where a "newbie" would ask a legitimate question, and then me bumrushed by the PG crowd with a bunch of stupid ass comments. Next thing you know the PG crowd is following him around thread to thread with their dumbass comments basically heckling the poor guy, and then he eventually just gives up and quits posting. I even noticed many of the more established posters caught a bunch of s**t when they first signed up. I guess the PG crowd here are just like a bunch of circling sharks always looking for their next prey.
Sorry, but that's a club I don't want to be in!

Look in the filiform corrosion threadI love it...although I'm sad because there hasn't been any recent Tom threads in the maintenance section

Why not? He is not carrying the cargo for hire. He is not being paid to fly the plane, the aircraft is incidental. It's no different than tossing it in the back seat of the car. Same as flying personal A/C to a meeting and bringing a couple colleagues along. As long as you get no more than an even share of expense from each person, it is legal. You can not profit directly from flying with a PPL. You could even deduct the expense on your 1040.
Plane (wether a rental or owned outright) will be expensed (Schedule C) just as any other equipment is. I don't get paid to fly cargo, I don't get paid to fly passengers. Thus no CPL or part 135 operator required. I'm compensated by selling advertising and internet services. The plane is incidental to the business. I don't know how else to simplify it for you.My guess is, based on the statements he made, he's going to have his business pay for the plane.
