For all you IFR pilots out there...

:D:yes: At least they were on the ground. I always seem to be droning merrily long when out of the blue I get the "hey I've got a clearance amendment for ya, advise when ready to copy.....

It seems whenever I get comfortable while IMC ,I get a long change of route. Usually not a simple change, most times I have to have the controller spell the new waypoints.

hold on, can you repeat that? I still didn't get it, you read it too fast... this isn't a race

I was on a flight down to Florida when I heard ATC call another aircraft. "I have an amendment for you. I don't know why but it's a long one. Let me know when you are ready to copy. I'll spell the waypoints for you."

What followed was a very nice controller slowly and carefully reading out a fairly long complex clearance, spelling each waypoint as he went.

I hope I get a clearance from that guy some day.

And that's when you go VFR

Seems like I get those about 80% of the time. I stopped trying to guess what they want. Just file direct and hope they give it to me.

Mark, I was on Tampa Approach the other day and I heard someone giving out IFR re-routing, very slow and very easy to understand, if you were on Tampa Approach maybe that was the same guy. For my IFR cross country that I did I also got some easy to follow instructions from Ft. Myers.

This video just made me laugh as it illustrates how easy we can have it (cleared direct) and just how friggin' complicated it CAN be to get from point A to point B.

Anybody ever fly out of KSQL? They publish a 2 page departure clearance for VFR....

Yeah, first time I tried to get IFR out of the Boston area (OWD), I filed something like WOONS V3 MRB CJR. The computer was happy to accept it (and even the expected route parrotted back the same route).

Called CD at OWD...

"Well that's not going to work, you got your pencil ready?"

There is no such thing as a published departure clearance for VFR.

The published IFR DP is pretty reasonable. The one they really give you is not. But it's essentially just a VFR right downwind departure.

It's REAL close to the KSFO conga line.

I heard a guy come back to ATC after a rapid-fire route change with "You can say that again one time slow, or three times fast, your choice, I've got all day."

Of course the other day I got a call:

ROA: I have a new full route clearance for you, advise when ready to copy.
I dig up a pen and my pad.
27K: Ready to copy
ROA: Cleared to CJR via direct Cassanova direct.
(CJR is the VOR about 4 miles off the field)

Great, I needed to copy that.

27K: Direct CSN direct.

Like clockwork EVERY flight from Nor Cal to So Cal:

Nor Cal: Receive Clearance
Handoff: Oakland Center
Handoff: Los Angeles Center

LA Center: "Skylane XYZ, I have an amended clearance for you, advise when ready to copy"

Literally every IFR flight....even one I just did with the same routing.

One of these day I am tempted on handoff from OAK to LA Center to just check in with:

"LA Center, Skylane 12XYZ level 9000...ready to copy"
