European airspace shutdown due to volcanic ash.

As a result, I can't tell what's actually happening in Europe. Does anyone here have accurate information?

Here is what my pal in Germany says. He works for the USAF in planning and filing flights:

"Yes, right now about all of the north-western/central European airspaces are closed to IFR traffic. They are talking about 60% of all flights in Europe are cancelled. "
(that was 2 days ago.)

ps he had no good info on rentals in europe for ya, Felix

Interesting aircraft parking at Narita(Tokyo). All the flight to Europe are being held up here in Tokyo. The ramps over by the JAL hangers to the south of the terminals are just completely filled with Luftahnsa, BA, Austrian, Air France, etc liveried jets that are stuck here.

Air Force One's trip to Poland for the funeral has been canceled due to the ash.

Fastest trip today through KORD's immigration lines! Hardly anyone there this afternoon. I spoke with the immigration officer and he said they cut staffing in half due to all the canceled flights.

Thanks for asking, though!

Yeah, I guess you can't expect the news media to know what IFR is or how it is relevant in this situation....

Just checked in for my flight San Francisco - Frankfurt tomorrow at 2200Z. I don't have high hopes, but we'll see. No flights at FRA until tomorrow 1300Z as of right now, so there is hope still.....

I saw a Virgin plane coming in for a landing at 745 PM. It may have been Virgin America not Atlantic though.

The cloud got me tonight -- and I'm not even traveling!

There was a message on my answering machine letting me know the Swing Out Sister concert I had tickets for on Thursday night was cancelled. The band and crew can't get here!

How do you say the name of the volcano?

I mean, besides "the Icelandic volcano"
