Looking ahead at avionics and communications in an amateur built project, what are some good sources for non-certified instruments, radios, nav/comms, etc? Still just looking around as this is a year or two out yet, but does anyone have suggestions for where the best place is to look for ideas?

EAA is a good place to start.

On the glass slide, there’s
- Dynon/AFS
- Garmin for experimental
- GRT
- Levil
- MGL

All offer full EFIS systems, some offer individual indicators, too.

Go to Oshkosh, WI this year for the AirVenture (July 21-27).

They have four massive hangars full of exhibitors, where you can see and operate the actual equipment you might be interested in. Great place to ask the vendors any questions you might have.

Here's the exhibitor list for 2024:

If you don't want to wait until the end of July, you can go to Lakeland, FL for Sun 'n Fun (April 1-6). Not as big as OSH, but still a lot of vendor booths where you can look at stuff, but also touch and operate.

Here's their current exhibitor list:

Just for the sake of learning, watch some of these videos. You can learn the Skyview system for free and it relates to all the modern avionics that are popular with EAB. Once you have a handle on the Skyview system, start comparing to Garmin and MGL:

How modern do you want to be (i.e. how much are you willing to spend)?

I've bought non-certified instruments from Aircraft Spruce, engine gauges from the local auto parts store, a used com radio on Barnstormers.

+1 for the suggestion to go to OSH.

Depending on what you’re looking to do, also take a look at Kanardia. I have their stuff in my gyro and like them.

As for radios and transponders, consider Trig especially if you’re interested in small indicators on the panel. Both Trig and Kanardia have 2 1/4” gauges for things.

What is your intended mission? Around the patch? X/C IFR with coupled precision approaches?
